Hiroki Kuroda was less than stellar in a loss to the Royals Monday, permitting three runs on seven hits and three walks over just 5 1/3 frames.
He struck out four in the outing and was taken deep by Mike Moustakas. Kuroda has been hit or miss for the Yankees thus far and has failed to go beyond 5 1/3 innings three of the last four times out. He’ll bring a disappointing 4.56 ERA and 1.48 WHIP into this weekend’s start in Oakland. May 21 - 10:41 PM

Phil Hughes' next start has been pushed back from Saturday to Monday.

He is expected to split Monday's game with Hiroki Kuroda. The change of plans means that Hughes is unofficially in the rotation and will likely start the third game of the season against the Rays on March 8.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi indicated Tuesday that CC Sabathia and Hiroki Kuroda are the only starters locked into rotation spots.

The implication here is that Michael Pineda, Ivan Nova, Phil Hughes and Freddy Garcia will compete for the final three spots. However, we find it highly unlikely that Pineda will begin the year in the minors after being acquired for Jesus Montero and Nova likely has a very solid claim on a spot after winning 16 games last year. Barring something unforeseen, the only real competition will be between Hughes and Garcia for the fifth spot.

Buster Olney of ESPN.com reports that the asking prices for free agent starters Roy Oswalt, Hiroki Kuroda and Edwin Jackson "have come down significantly."

Olney says Oswalt is now looking for $8 million and Kuroda is ready to settle for a $10-11 million pact. He doesn't list the new asking price for Jackson, who had reportedly been looking for $15 million per season on a multi-year deal. It's inevitable (especially in Jackson's case) that prices start to drop at this time of the year, as players (and teams) want to work something out before spring training. Oswalt dealt with back issues in 2011 but would be a nice gamble on an $8 million deal.

According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, the Yankees are only interested in a one-year deal for Edwin Jackson or Hiroki Kuroda.

Yankees general partner Hal Steinbrenner met with Jackson's agent, Scott Boras, at the owners' meetings this week, but has yet to approve expanding payroll to add a significant player. The 28-year-old right-hander is reportedly seeking a five-year deal worth about $15 million per season, so Boras will likely continue to shop around for now. Kuroda, who is also drawing interest from the Red Sox, is reportedly looking for a deal worth $12-13 million per season. Sherman suspects that the Bombers will wait out the market, perhaps signing Jackson, Kuroda or even Bartolo Colon to a one-year pact.

Gordon Edes of ESPN Boston reports that the Red Sox are "still in on" Ubaldo Jimenez and are one of five teams pursuing Hiroki Kuroda.

The Sox have been connected with both pitchers for a while now, as they are looking for a rotation reinforcement with Clay Buchholz's status looking sketchier by the day. The Yankees and Reds appear to be the other major players for Jimenez, while Kuroda has been connected to the Tigers for a while.

Clayton Kershaw will start next Friday against the Diamondbacks in the Dodgers' first game after the All-Star break.

It's about as obvious a choice as it gets. Manager Don Mattingly said he will ask NL manager Bruce Bochy to not use Kershaw for more than one inning so that he'll be ready for the start. The 23-year-old lefty has gone 9-4 with a 3.03 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and a major league-leading 147 strikeouts for the last-place Dodgers. Kershaw will be followed by Hiroki Kuroda, Ted Lilly, Chad Billingsley and Rubby De La Rosa.
