Greg Holland (rib) is expected to miss three weeks.
Holland was placed on the 15-day disabled list Saturday with what is being termed a "left rib stress reaction." He won't throw for the next several days. Jonathan Broxton's grip on the ninth-inning job grows a bit stronger.
Royals placed RHP Greg Holland on the 15-day disabled list with a left rib stress reaction.
Holland has struggled in the early part of the 2012 season, and this injury may be the cause of that. Jeremy Jeffress has been recalled to take Holland's place in the Royals' bullpen. Jonathan Broxton's job security likely increases with this news.
Joakim Soria underwent Tommy John surgery Tuesday in Los Angeles.
Dr. Lewis Yocum performed the surgery, which went well, according to Royals' officials. This is the second Tommy John surgery for Soria, who will miss the entire 2012 season. Royals' manager Ned Yost has yet to name an official replacement at closer, but Jonathan Broxton and Greg Holland are the favorites for the gig.
Greg Holland tossed a scoreless ninth inning Friday night against the White Sox.
Holland had allowed runs in three out of his last four appearances, so this was nice to see. Despite his mediocre 4.66 ERA this spring, the 26-year-old right-hander has a an impressive 12/1 K/BB ratio over 9 2/3 innings. The Royals appear to be leaning toward Jonathan Broxton as Joakim Soria's replacement, but we wouldn't be surprised if Holland eventually snags the closer gig.
Greg Holland seems likely to serve as the Royals' closer this season.
Jonathan Broxton is another candidate for the gig, but Holland is clearly the best choice. The 26-year-old right-hander registered a stellar 1.80 ERA and 74/19 K/BB ratio in 60 innings last season for Kansas City. Longtime Royals closer Joakim Soria is out for 2012 following Tommy John surgery.
Joakim Soria has opted to undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery on his right elbow.
Soria had been debating whether to get cut open or rehab the injury, but with the amount of damage in his ulnar collateral ligament, he really didn't have much of a choice. The Royals reliever will presumably hope to be ready for the start of the 2013 season. Kansas City hasn't named a replacement for Soria in the ninth inning, but Jonathan Broxton or Greg Holland are the candidates.
Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star writes that Joakim Soria "seems likely" to undergo Tommy John surgery.
Soria went to see Dr. Lewis Yocum on Tuesday in Los Angeles after an MRI on Monday showed damage in the ulnar collateral ligament of his throwing elbow. The second exam confirmed the ligament damage, so surgery appears inevitable. Still, he's currently taking a couple of days to consider his options. Jonathan Broxton should be considered the favorite to save games in his absence, but Greg Holland could also be in the mix.
Joakim Soria (elbow) is scheduled to see Dr. Lewis Yocum on Tuesday in Los Angeles.
The Royals announced Monday afternoon that an MRI showed damage in the ulnar collateral ligament of Soria's right elbow. The extent of the damage isn't yet known, but torn UCLs usually mean Tommy John surgery. If that's the case here, Jonathan Broxton should become the favorite for saves while Greg Holland lingers as a possibility.
The Royals announced Monday that an MRI has shown damage in the ulnar collateral ligament of Joakim Soria's right elbow.
Bad news. While the immediate concern is the possibility of Tommy John surgery, the extent of the damage isn't yet known and the Royals didn't announce how they'll proceed. However, it's worth noting that the 27-year-old right-hander previous had Tommy John surgery back in 2003. Assuming Soria ends up missing significant time, Greg Holland and Jonathan Broxton will become the favorites to close games for the Royals.
Troy Renck of the Denver Post reports that the Rockies have inquired about free agent right-hander LaTroy Hawkins.
Hawkins, who turns 39 in December, returned from shoulder surgery this season and posted a 2.42 ERA and 28/10 K/BB ratio over 48 1/3 innings. Renck hears they have also called about Jonathan Broxton, though he would reportedly prefer to sign with a team closer to his home state of Georgia. The Rockies would likely need to trade Huston Street in order to make room for either pitcher.

Javy Guerra earned his second save of the season with a perfect inning against the Astros Sunday.
Right now, Guerra is the preferred option in Los Angeles for saves. He has been used as the closer for about three weeks now, but the Dodgers simply have not been generating save opportunities. The hard-throwing 25-year-old certainly has the stuff to maintain the gig at least until Jonathan Broxton (elbow) returns.
