White Sox and 1B Jose Abreu avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $10.825 million contract.
It's actually a small pay cut from the $11.667 million that the 29-year-old slugger earned in 2016, but an increase from the $10.5 million he would've made had he not opted into arbitration this winter. Once Edwin Encarnacion finds a new home through free agency, expect trade interest in Abreu to pick up as he'd become the top option available and at a relatively affordable price. He got off to a slow start in 2016 and still finished the season hitting .293/.353/.468 with 25 long balls and 100 RBI. Sat, Dec 17, 2016 12:39:00 PM

According to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe, the White Sox have received "due diligence" calls on Todd Frazier.

Teams have put out feelers for Frazier but teammate Jose Abreu seems to be drawing more interest. Cafardo speculates that Frazier's impending free agency (he'll hit the market after next season) could be holding teams back from pursuing him. Frazier enjoyed a career year in 2016, slugging 40 homers and 98 RBI to go with 15 stolen bases.

A rival executive told MLB Network's Jon Morosi that the White Sox are more likely to trade Adam Eaton than Jose Abreu at the winter meetings.

The White Sox seem to be in the mode of listening to trade offers for virtually anyone on their roster, but it's not surprising that Eaton appears likelier than Abreu to be dealt. The outfielder should be able to fetch a nice return, as he's a career .284/.357/.414 hitter and is under team control for just $38.4 million through 2021.

Free agent outfielder Yoenis Cespedes and White Sox first baseman Jose Abreu are among various MLB figures on a U.S. witness list for an upcoming trial regarding the smuggling of baseball players from Cuba.

Neither player is accused of any wrongdoing. South Florida sports agents Bartolo Hernandez and Julio Estrada have pleaded not guilty on charges of conspiracy and bringing immigrants into the United States illegally. It's alleged that baseball players have paid the smuggling ring more than $15 million to get them out of Cuba. The trial is set for January 3.

Todd Frazier (flu) is back in the White Sox' lineup Sunday.

Frazier missed the last two days with the flu but is apparently feeling better. He's at first base, as Jose Abreu is getting a day off.

Zack Cozart (quad) is out again Thursday.

Cozart made an early exit from Monday's series opener against the Cubs with tightness in his lower right quad and will now miss Thursday's series finale. Eugenio Suarez is starting at shortstop and Jordan Pacheco is playing third base versus Cubs righty Jason Hammel.
