Donovan Mitchell won the 2018 ESPY award for Breakthrough Athlete.
Mitchell made the All-Rookie First Team and was the Slam Dunk champion this season, and he gets another offseason award to put on his mantle. He flirted with top-50 fantasy value in 9-cat leagues last year and should see that rise if he can add a few more rebounds (3.7), steals (1.5) and blocks (0.3) with improved FG percentages (43.7%). He's unlikely to be available after the third round in competitive leagues. Jul 18 - 8:29 PM

Ben Simmons was named the Rookie of the Year for 2017-18.

It was really a two-man race between Simmons and Donovan Mitchell, but Jayson Tatum turned a lot of heads as well. Simmons exceeded expectations this season, averaging 15.8 points, 8.2 assists, 8.1 rebounds, 1.7 steals and 0.9 blocks while leading the 76ers to a 52-win season. He doesn't have a 3-point shot yet and his free throw percentage leaves a lot to be desired, but the nightly triple-double threat will be a popular pick in the early rounds for any owner willing to punt a couple categories.

The three finalists for Rookie of the Year are Ben Simmons, Donovan Mitchell and Jayson Tatum.

There was no real drama in this 'finalist' pool, as those three rose above the ranks of guys like Lonzo Ball, Lauri Markkanen, John Collins and Kyle Kuzma. Tatum is a longshot here, despite his terrific play in the postseason, and it's widely considered a two-man race between Simmons and Mitchell.

Dante Exum posted 14 points on 4-of-6 FGs and 6-of-6 FTs on Sunday, with five assists, three rebounds, one steal and one turnover in 17 minutes of action.

Exum was coming off a 21-point gem vs. the Grizzlies and he continues to shine -- the only difference is that his minutes dropped off with Ricky Rubio (hamstring) back in the starting lineup. As long as Rubio and Donovan Mitchell are both active, it'll be hard for Exum to have more than deep-league appeal.
Apr 1 - 9:52 PM

Ben Simmons had 16 points, eight rebounds (four offensive), eight assists, one steal and one block in 37 minutes during Sunday's loss in D.C.

Simmons' versatility continues to impress Sixers fans, fantasy owners, and his own teammates and coaches. "It’s staggering the distance he can cover on limited dribbles," said coach Brett Brown. Simmons isn't bashful about his unique skill-set, either, saying recently, "I’m 6-10, I can pass the ball, I’m fast, I’m strong, I’m quick." If you ignore his 56.7% free-throw shooting, he's leading the field for rookie fantasy value ahead of fellow ROY candidate Donovan Mitchell.

Derrick Rose has been traded to the Jazz.

Rose hasn't been productive on the court in a long time and we don't see that changing in Utah. With Donovan Mitchell and Ricky Rubio running the offense in Utah, Rose is not worth picking up in most formats. He's expected to be released so that he can pursue a deal with a playoff team.

Jonas Jerebko will replace Thabo Sefolosha in the starting lineup for Wednesday's game against the Wizards.

Derrick Favors (ankle) is unavailable for Wednesday's game, so the Jazz will roll out a starting five featuring Ricky Rubio, Donovan Mitchell, Joe Ingles, Jerebko and Ekpe Udoh. As a starter this season, Jerebko has posted averages of 9.1 points, 4.0 boards, 1.4 triples and 1.1 assists per contest, so he's basically just a low-end streaming option in deep leagues.

Jayson Tatum and Donovan Mitchell have been named Rookie of the Month for the Eastern and Western Conferences, respectively.

Tatum averaged 14.6 points and 5.9 rebounds in December, while shooting 52.9% from the field and 45.1% from downtown. He's the fifth Celtics rookie to earn the honor, joining Dino Radja, Paul Pierce, Adrian Griffin and Marcus Smart. Meanwhile, Mitchell was basically a lock in the West after averaging 23.1 points, 2.2 triples, 3.4 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 1.8 steals in 13 games for the Jazz.

Ricky Rubio was quiet in 23 minutes during Saturday's 103-89 home loss, posting six points, five assists, three rebounds and zero 3-pointers, steals or blocks.

Rubio had 11 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists vs. the Spurs on Thursday, but that came with Donovan Mitchell (toe) on the sidelines. The rookie returned tonight and Rubio's numbers predictably tumbled, as he's getting fewer touches with Mitchell on-ball so much for the Jazz. Rubio's trade value has bottomed out, so owners might as well hold him and hope he starts to click with his new team in 2018.

Rodney Hood started for the short-handed Jazz on Wednesday, picking up 17 points on 5-of-11 FGs and 4-of-5 FTs in 28 minutes of action.

The Jazz were playing without Donovan Mitchell (bruised toe) and his team-high 28.4 percent usage, which left a lot of touches on the table. Hood has never been shy offensively, but his scoring was the extent of his value tonight -- he added one steal with zero rebounds, assists or blocks, and he turned it over four times. He'll look to atone vs. the visiting Spurs on Thursday.

Raul Neto (concussion) has been ruled out for Wednesday's game against the Bulls.

He wasn't able to practice on Monday and was listed as doubtful, so this isn't surprising at all. Donovan Mitchell will have a good shot at earning minutes in the high-30s tonight sans Neto.
Wed, Dec 13, 2017 12:06:00 PM

Raul Neto (ribs) is being listed as questionable for Tuesday's game against the Nuggets.

If Neto can't give it a go on Tuesday, Ricky Rubio and Donovan Mitchell will get all the run they can possibly handle and Nate Wolters would have the opportunity to get into the rotation. Check back for another update after shootaround on Tuesday.

Ricky Rubio (Achilles soreness) is probable for Saturday's game vs. Orlando.

Rubio was sidelined Friday night vs. the Nets. It was the first game he missed all season. Donovan Mitchell started at PG and played 35 minutes. Raul Neto logged 20 minutes off the bench. Nate Wolters saw just three minutes of action. Neto would see his playing time reduced if Rubio returns. Mitchell would still likely log 30-plus minutes. Rubio has struggled this season. He is shooting 37.3 percent from the floor and averaging just 5.5 assists per game. He's never averaged fewer than 7.3 assists over a full NBA campaign.

Ricky Rubio (Achilles soreness) has been ruled out of Friday's game vs. the Nets.

Rubio has been struggling all season, so here's hoping that resting his Achilles may help. Raul Neto and Donovan Mitchell will see an uptick in minutes with Rubio sidelined. Over the 97 minutes Mitchell has logged over his last three games, 32 of those minutes came at point guard. Mitchell is an intriguing DFS option for Friday, especially considering Utah is playing the fast-paced Nets. The Jazz has also recalled Nate Wolters from the G-League. He will be active on Friday and will serve as Utah's third-string PG.

The Jazz have no plans of benching Ricky Rubio, according to sources of Tony Jones of the Salt Lake Tribune.

Rubio has not played very well at all in Utah this season, and he's been particularly bad over the past few weeks with meager averages of 11.6 points, 3.9 assists, 1.7 steals and 3.3 turnovers per contest, but the Jazz just want him to play through this rough stretch. He also doesn't have an obvious replacement, as Quin Snyder prefers to run Donovan Mitchell at the two and Dante Exum (shoulder) is essentially out for the season, so for now, his spot in the starting five is safe.

Joe Johnson (right wrist) met with a hand specialist on Tuesday and will be re-evaluated in two weeks.

Johnson was initially targeting a return to the court by mid-November, but now it's looking like he won't be back to the court until December at the earliest. He did show signs of improvement at his checkup, but the 16-year vet simply needs a bit more time. Donovan Mitchell, Rodney Hood and Joe Ingles will all help fill the void in his absence.

Ricky Rubio was quiet during a lopsided loss in Houston on Sunday, chipping in 10 points, three assists, two rebounds and one 3-pointer in 20 minutes.

Rubio has been checking out earlier in the first and third quarters recently, which is by design. "Ricky is such a competitor I think he expends a lot of energy," said coach Quin Snyder. "So that substitution pattern fits him. It took us a little while to figure that out." The veteran has still been getting plenty of minutes and closing out quarters, tonight's blowout aside, so there's no cause for concern here.

Joe Johnson (tendon instability in his right wrist) will miss at least the next two weeks of action.

With Johnson out of commission for at least the next two weeks, Joe Ingles, Thabo Sefolosha and Donovan Mitchell should see an uptick in minutes, and Rodney Hood may be forced to spend some more time at the three. Mitchell could be someone to think about as a speculative add in deep leagues, while Sefolosha is more of a low-end steals specialist in deeper formats. Jonas Jerebko could also get into the rotation, but he's not someone to think about in most leagues. Johnson should be cut in leagues that don't offer an IR-spot.

Joe Johnson (right wrist sprain) did not practice on Tuesday.

It's not clear exactly when Johnson suffered this wrist injury or its severity, but for now, we'll have to consider him questionable for Wednesday's matchup against the Trail Blazers. If Johnson is forced to the sidelines, Joe Ingles, Thabo Sefolosha and Donovan Mitchell could all be in line for a slight uptick in minutes. Stay tuned.

Rodney Hood is listed as probable for Wednesday after missing time with a calf injury.

This is bad news for rookie Donovan Mitchell, although Hood could be rusty or struggle with conditioning tonight. But Mitchell becomes a risky play with this news.
Wed, Oct 25, 2017 04:14:00 PM
Joe Ingles - G/F - Jazz

Joe Ingles is listed as probable for Wednesday despite not being able to keep food down for the last couple days.

He was limited to just 18 minutes on Tuesday but he must be feeling better if he's likely to go tonight. His availability, along with Rodney Hood also being listed as probable, hurts rookie Donovan Mitchell.
