Jets coach Todd Bowles blamed Christian Hackenberg's poor showing in Saturday's preseason loss to the Lions on poor blocking by the offensive line.
Hackenberg was predictably awful, completing just 2-of-6 passes for 14 yards before bowing out at halftime. The Penn State alum has made shockingly little progress since arriving as a second-round pick last season, though Bowles said Saturday's clunker wasn't his fault. "They really didn’t give him a chance," he said. "I don’t think anybody can have a chance when we’re blocking like that." Adding to the dysfunction, likely Week 1 starter Josh McCown was instructed not to speak with reporters after Saturday's game. The Jets are a hot mess in all facets. Aug 20 - 10:14 AM

ESPN New York projects the Jets to keep three quarterbacks, but believes Bryce Petty could be in "some trouble" if he's out-played by Christian Hackenberg this summer.

That's not a realistic scenario, so it appears the Jets will be keeping three quarterbacks. It's not the best use of resources when you get to keep only 53 players, but the tanking Jets have spots to spare behind brittle veteran Josh McCown. It's quite possible all three quarterbacks make starts in 2017.

ESPN Jets reporter Rich Cimini believes Josh McCown is the "heavy favorite" to start.

McCown starting has been the expectation since he signed in March, but the Jets plan to give all three quarterbacks equal OTA reps and have continued to say there is an open battle. While Cimini does expect there to be a competition, he thinks McCown "will be the clear-cut front-runner" entering camp. Even so, McCown has struggled to stay on the field in recent years, so it is likely we will see Christian Hackenberg at some point this season.

Jets coach Todd Bowles said there will be an open competition at quarterback.

Bowles said Josh McCown, Bryce Petty, and Christian Hackenberg will all get their chance to win the starting job. The coach also did not rule out the possibility of a rookie being added to the mix. McCown is the favorite to win any competition, but he has not been able to stay healthy the last several years. It is likely multiple quarterbacks start for the Jets in 2017.

Both Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg received backup reps this week in practice.

Petty and Hackenberg are competing for the backup job with Geno Smith (knee) on injured reserve. Petty should eventually win the competition, but the fact he even has to compete with someone as woefully unprepared as Hackenberg says something about how the Jets view him. Ryan Fitzpatrick should remain the starter for as long as the Jets are mathematically eligible for the playoffs.
