Jets coach Todd Bowles said Christian Hackenberg will not play this season unless Bryce Petty suffers an injury.
The aftermath of Josh McCown's season-ending injury would seem like the perfect time to get a second-round sophomore who has yet to play a single snap in the regular season some work, but the coach sees it differently. "We got people at every position that want to play," Bowles said. "We’re not jumping people over people just to play considering anything. Bryce is our starter." With the Saints, Chargers, and Patriots left on the schedule, Petty is going to struggle, opening up the possibility if not likelihood Hackenberg gets a shot over the next three games. Still, not playing him now says everything about his future. Dec 14 - 8:40 AM

Josh McCown will be the Jets' Week 1 quarterback.

McCown will be one of the worst, if not the worst, starting quarterbacks in the league, but Christian Hackenberg would have been one of the worst starters of all time. The Jets had no choice. They gave Hackenberg every chance to show improvement this summer. Instead, he went all the way off the rails. One of the most brittle players in football, McCown has zero shot at making 16 starts during his age-38 campaign. Bryce Petty will likely be the next man up, though the Jets have yet to announce the No. 2. Gang Green threatens to be historically bad on offense in 2017.

Jets coach Todd Bowles said he will announce his starting quarterback next Monday.

Bowles wants to watch the tape of the third preseason game before making a final decision, but the competition is all but wrapped up after Christian Hackenberg laid an egg on Saturday night. At this point, it would be a shock if Josh McCown was not named the starter for Week 1. That said, McCown's injury history suggests Hackenberg and perhaps even Bryce Petty will get a chance at some point.

ESPN New York projects the Jets to keep three quarterbacks, but believes Bryce Petty could be in "some trouble" if he's out-played by Christian Hackenberg this summer.

That's not a realistic scenario, so it appears the Jets will be keeping three quarterbacks. It's not the best use of resources when you get to keep only 53 players, but the tanking Jets have spots to spare behind brittle veteran Josh McCown. It's quite possible all three quarterbacks make starts in 2017.

ESPN Jets reporter Rich Cimini believes Josh McCown is the "heavy favorite" to start.

McCown starting has been the expectation since he signed in March, but the Jets plan to give all three quarterbacks equal OTA reps and have continued to say there is an open battle. While Cimini does expect there to be a competition, he thinks McCown "will be the clear-cut front-runner" entering camp. Even so, McCown has struggled to stay on the field in recent years, so it is likely we will see Christian Hackenberg at some point this season.

Jets coach Todd Bowles said there will be an open competition at quarterback.

Bowles said Josh McCown, Bryce Petty, and Christian Hackenberg will all get their chance to win the starting job. The coach also did not rule out the possibility of a rookie being added to the mix. McCown is the favorite to win any competition, but he has not been able to stay healthy the last several years. It is likely multiple quarterbacks start for the Jets in 2017.
