Brian Costello of the New York Post doesn't think it's a "sure thing" that Josh McCown will start Week 1.
It's the second time in three days a Jets reporter has expressed skepticism of McCown after ESPN's Rich Cimini said Friday that the perceived gap between McCown and Christian Hackenberg "isn't as wide as we thought." Given reports of Hackenberg hitting unsuspecting reporters with errant passes at OTAs, you have to wonder just how badly McCown must be playing for Hackenberg to gain ground on him. The same goes for Bryce Petty, who has sunk to third on the depth chart. In addition to having the league's worst quarterback situation, the Jets may have the league's thinnest receiving corps. This is shaping up to be a train wreck year in East Rutherford. Jun 18 - 9:53 AM

Cody Kessler (concussion) has been cleared to return for Week 9.

Coach Hue Jackson hedged on whether Kessler would immediately reclaim the starting job, saying he had to see how the rookie looks in practice. Josh McCown stuffed the stat sheet in Kessler's absence Sunday, but saw his play gradually go off the cliff. Kessler should be considered the favorite to start against Dallas.

Speaking Monday, Browns coach Hue Jackson called Cody Kessler "our starter."

In other words, Josh McCown (collarbone) won't be reclaiming the starting job even once he's back to full health. McCown has resumed practicing, but seems a week or two away from holding the clipboard. The Browns haven't won a game on his watch, but Kessler has been surprisingly competent. Jackson clearly has an interest in developing a quarterback the Browns surprisingly took in the third round.

Speaking on PFT Live, ESPN Cleveland's Tony Grossi said the Browns' quarterback battle is "not an open competition."

Grossi said Robert Griffin III will get four out of five reps with the first-team offense. Coach Hue Jackson has refused to name Griffin the starter heading into camp, but it appears the job is all but sewn up. If third-rounder Cody Kessler shows well enough to earn the backup job, the Browns could trade Josh McCown in camp.
