Frank Gore insists there was "no physical reason" the 49ers decreased his workload down the stretch last season.
Just 92 of Gore's 282 carries came in his final six games, while he combined for only 29 totes in two playoff games. The Sacramento Bee reported Gore was limited by an "array of nagging, smaller injuries" down the stretch. Gore also insists the additions of Brandon Jacobs and LaMichael James won't affect his 2012 workloads. "As long as I'm healthy and in great shape and ready to play, I'm going to be the Frank Gore I've always been." The reality is, Gore could end up averaging in the neighborhood of only 15 touches a game in his age-29 season. May 22 - 9:02 PM

49ers RB Brandon Jacobs ''isn't concerned'' with competing for carries with Frank Gore.

''That part will work itself out,'' Jacobs said. "My role is going to come off how much I earn. I'm going to earn everything I get." The 49ers may enter the year planning to limit Gore's role, but have yet to commit to Jacobs as their short-yardage back. If he falls behind Kendall Hunter in training camp, he won't be a lock for the Opening Day roster.

49ers agreed to terms with Brandon Jacobs, formerly of the Giants, on a one-year contract.

Jacobs is joining Randy Moss and former Giants teammate Mario Manningham as offensive additions in San Francisco. The 49ers will remain a run-dominant offense, with Jacobs perhaps handling the majority of the short-yardage and goal-line work, putting a dent in Frank Gore's fantasy value. Should Gore miss time, though, the more explosive Kendall Hunter would remain the back to own. Anthony Dixon appears to be the odd man out of the backfield picture.

Coach Jim Harbaugh expects Kendall Hunter to see more action on offense in 2012.

"He did a fabulous job for us in two phases -– offensively and in the area of special teams," said Harbaugh. Hunter played 28 percent of offensive snaps last year compared to 70 percent for Frank Gore. It would be fair to expect a 10 percent swing to keep Gore healthy down the stretch in his age-29 season.

Rookie RB Kendall Hunter drew his first NFL start in Week 4 against the Eagles, posting 100 total yards in the Niners' comeback win.

He rushed nine times for 38 yards with a respectable 4.24 YPC, but it was his two grabs for 62 yards that made an imprint on the game. Frank Gore looked like a guy who's not ready to give up his feature back role with 127 yards on 8.5 YPC, and held an estimated 2-to-1 advantage in the snap count. Regardless, Hunter earned a similar workload going forward and should be owned in all leagues, if only as a handcuff.

Head coach Jim Harbaugh has confirmed that rookie Kendall Hunter will enter the season as the 49ers' No. 2 running back ahead of Anthony Dixon.

"Right now, Kendall Hunter is ahead on the depth chart," Harbaugh said on Saturday. Hunter's 231 yards on just 35 carries (6.6 YPC) led all running backs this preseason. Dixon, who went for 237 yards on 70 carries as a rookie last season, took the ball 40 times for 129 yards (3.2 YPC). Hunter is the handcuff to have for Frank Gore owners.

Rookie RB Kendall Hunter rushed 11 times for 57 and added one reception for five yards against the Chargers in the preseason finale.

The fourth-rounder continues to look legit. Hunter was responsible for 51 of the 49ers 80 yards on the first drive only to give way to Anthony Dixon at the goal-line. Hunter finishes preseason with 35 carries for an NFL-high 231 yards (6.6 YPC) and a touchdown. Coach Jim Harbaugh conceded after the game that Hunter is "definitely playing well enough to be the No. 2 back." He's a fantasy starter if Frank Gore goes down with an injury.

Rookie RB Kendall Hunter has not yet moved past Anthony Dixon on the depth chart.

As beat writer Matt Barrows points out, a backup 49ers running back has led the NFL in rushing in three of the last four exhibition seasons. Hunter leads the league through three games this year, showing better "north-south" skills than Dixon. The two are neck-and-neck on the depth chart, though we suspect Hunter would get more touches than Dixon should Frank Gore miss time.
