ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported Friday that the Chiefs have "no concerns whatsoever" about Jamaal Charles' ACL recovery.
"Chiefs tell me no concerns whatsoever," Mort reported on ESPN 32. "... They expect him certainly to be ready for training camp. They're excited about him." Though Charles is sitting out OTAs, all signs point to him returning fully in camp. Mort also noted new Chiefs OC Brian Daboll's success with a somewhat similar player in Reggie Bush last year with the Dolphins. Bush set career highs in carries (216) and rushing yards (1,086) in Daboll's scheme. May 25 - 7:13 PM

Jamaal Charles expects Peyton Hillis' offensive role to be similar to that of Thomas Jones in 2010.

"He'll come in and get all the tough yards and all the pounding," said Charles. "That's the same thing that Thomas did ... He's bringing power and explosiveness, and he's strong. He's going to catch the ball and he's got great hands, and I feel he's an all-around player like me." While we expect Charles to lead the backfield in touches, Hillis certainly has the potential to be a drain on his fantasy value in 2012.

Coach Romeo Crennel indicated that "all-purpose back" Peyton Hillis' role will be game-plan specific this season.

"He's shown he can do everything. He can catch. He can run. He can block," said Crennel. "He might line up at fullback, he might line up at running back. There might be times where he'll be in the backfield with Jamaal (Charles) or Dexter McCluster." While the signing makes plenty of sense for the Chiefs, the fantasy values and consistent production of Hillis and Charles will both suffer in 2012.

Chiefs signed RB Peyton Hillis, formerly of the Browns, to a one-year, $3 million contract.

Hillis turned down more money from the Browns more than once last season. The signing reunites Hillis with OC Brian Daboll, who oversaw his breakout 2010 campaign in Cleveland. It also provides the Chiefs with an excellent insurance policy on rehabbing feature back Jamaal Charles (torn ACL), and a massive upgrade on short-yardage runners Thomas Jones and Jackie Battle. Although Hillis' presence makes it unlikely Charles will be in for a repeat of his 1,467-yard 2010 campaign, it restores the "thunder and lightning" dynamic Kansas City expertly exploited between Charles and Jones in 2010. That is, provided Hillis stays healthy after being limited to 10 games by a variety of ailments last season.

Chiefs GM Scott Pioli expects SS Eric Berry (torn ACL) to make a "full football return" before the start of training camp.

Updates on Berry's progress have been few and far between since he tore up his knee in Week 1 last season, but he's joined teammates Jamaal Charles (torn ACL) and Tony Moeaki (torn ACL) in being forecasted to be ready for the beginning of camp. It's possible Berry will even get in some work at Chiefs OTAs. Barring a setback, he'll be all systems go for Week 1 in 2012.

Thomas Jones is listed ahead of Jamaal Charles on the Chiefs' initial depth chart.

Don't read too much into this. As the Kansas City Star points out, "the Chiefs almost always defer to the veteran in cases like this." Over the final eight weeks of last season, Charles recorded 117 carries while Jones got 108. With the veteran in steep decline and Charles proving himself as one of the best backs in the league, that gap will rise greatly. Jones is nothing more than a handcuff.

Coach Todd Haley confirmed that FB Le'Ron McClain will not take any carries away from Jamaal Charles or Thomas Jones.

McClain has been outspoken in the past about his desire to carry the rock previously. But Haley made it very clear to McClain what his role is. "I'm a fullback, and I'm here to win. Two things. Just two things: Getting Jamaal Charles and Thomas Jones 1,000 (yards) apiece, that's what I'm here to do," McClain said.

Chiefs signed FB Le'Ron McClain, formerly of the Ravens.

The Chiefs have been in talks with McClain for nearly a week, and also reportedly worked out free agent Jason Snelling before coming to terms with the former Raven. McClain has made no secret about his desire for more carries in 2011, but he's not terribly likely to get them in Kansas City unless Thomas Jones appears to have lost another step in training camp. One of the best lead blockers in football, he should be a huge aid for Jamaal Charles as he looks to follow up his monster 2010 with another All-Pro campaign.
