Matt Forte (knee, toe) was upgraded to "full" in Thursday's practice.
Bilal Powell (calf) is expected to return, but the Jets have made it clear they want Forte leading their backfield. He'll be an RB4 against the Dolphins. Oct 19 - 4:03 PM

Bilal Powell (neck) will be held out of the Jets' preseason opener on Saturday.

Powell has been sidelined or limited in practice this week. The team is undecided about Matt Forte's (hamstring) status for Saturday. It's hard to envision him suiting up. Neither injury is serious, but camp has gotten off to about as poor a start as possible -- or perhaps as good -- for the tanking Jets.

Jets RBs coach Stump Mitchell said at minicamp the team's plan is to use "both" Bilal Powell and Matt Forte.

Mitchell added Powell would be a "Pro Bowler" if he ever got a chance at feature back work. Matt Forte's presence on the Jets' roster is nonsensical as they embrace full-on tank mode. We wouldn't be entirely surprised if Forte were released later in the offseason, especially if Powell and rookie Elijah McGuire show well. Either way, Powell is the favorite for touches.

Speaking Tuesday, Jets OC John Morton said he's planning to use a backfield-by-committee in 2017.

Morton said it will vary week to week whether Bilal Powell or Matt Forte takes the lead. Morton is mostly just confirming the obvious, but it's our strong suspicion that Powell will lead in touches more often than not. He was the far more dynamic player in 2016, making plays on all three downs. Now 31, Forte has lost a step or three. It could be a frustrating situation, but Powell is definitely the preferred own.

ESPN's Rich Cimini expects Bilal Powell to be the Jets' lead back this season.

We saw this shift to Powell starting to take place late last season when Forte was dealing with various injuries. And with the Jets now in full-blown rebuild mode, they may as well let the 28-year-old Powell see what he can do with a full season's worth of work. Forte broke down by midseason last year and is entering his age-32 year. At this stage, Powell offers more as both a runner and pass catcher and can play all three downs. He's looking like an RB2 with upside.
