Browns coach Pat Shurmur acknowledges 2012 is a make-or-break season for WR Mohamed Massaquoi.
"It’s time for him to show us what we know he can do," Shurmur said. Shurmur has wisely avoided seconding team president Mike Holmgren's prediction that Massaquoi will have "a little bit of a breakout year." The Browns drafted only one receiver, but Massaquoi could still find himself on the roster bubble without a healthy and productive preseason. May 15 - 11:07 AM

Coach Pat Shurmur says Greg Little and Mohamed Massaquoi are the Browns' "early starters" at receiver.

Little can be safely penciled in as the No. 1 wideout, but Massaquoi will have to fight off fourth-round pick Travis Benjamin. It's an advantage for Massaquoi to begin OTAs atop the depth chart, but he'll be far from guaranteed of starting in Week 1. He hasn't been the same player since his October 2010 concussion, and turned in a thoroughly unimpressive 2011. The Browns have proven almost comically hesitant to cut the cord on disappointing players, however, so Massaquoi's chances of winning the job can't be discounted.

According to Weather.com, rain showers are expected at Paul Brown Stadium for Sunday's Bengals-Browns game.

The conditions will likely be more of a factor for Colt McCoy than Andy Dalton, but neither should be relied upon as starting options this week. The Bengals have a top-10 pass defense and allow an average of just 223 passing yards per game. Mohamed Massaquoi and Jerome Simpson also need to be downgraded for their lack of involvement in the short passing game.

Ben Watson (concussion) and Mohamed Massaquoi (concussion) both missed Browns practice again Thursday.

Both players have sustained two concussions within the last year, making it unlikely they get cleared in time to play Sunday. Look for Evan Moore to draw the start as a sneaky fantasy play against the 49ers. Along with Greg Little, Moore figures to be Colt McCoy's favorite target.

Rookie Greg Little played more snaps (57) than any other Browns receiver in Week 1.

Brian Robiskie (47), Mohamed Massaquoi (41) and Josh Cribbs (26) were next on the list. Little was targeted just three times, but the high snap count suggests the coaching staff realizes he's the team's top playmaker even if he's not technically a starter. Little still represents the highest fantasy upside of the unimpressive quartet.

Brian Robiskie and Mohamed Massaquoi are listed as the Browns' starting receivers on their latest official depth chart.

Rookie Greg Little and Josh Cribbs are the backups. While Little is much more talented than Robiskie, the Browns are rolling with the incumbent's consistent yet unproductive play. That leaves the second-round rookie as merely a "wait and see" roster stash in deeper formats. Robiskie has 36 catches in 25 career NFL games.

Browns president Mike Holmgren said Monday he will be looking at the wide receiver position in free agency.

The Browns have sent mixed signals about their desire to upgrade the receiving corps this offseason. They say they have confidence in Mohamed Massaquoi and Brian Robiskie, but their actions speak louder. By drafting Greg Little and possibly adding an impact receiver in free agency, Colt McCoy may actually get to throw to some capable pass-catchers.

The Browns see second-round WR Greg Little as "bigger, stronger and more capable of taking a hit and getting yards after the catch than any receiver on their roster," according to the National Football Post.

Little has a great chance to step in as the Browns' No. 1 receiver right away. Brian Robiskie has proven to be among the least effective players in the league and Mohamed Massaquoi is a No. 2 receiver at best. Little's YAC ability will be put to good use in the Browns' West Coast offense.
