Latavius Murray rushed six times for 18 yards and caught 2-of-2 targets for 11 yards in the Vikings' NFC Championship loss to the Eagles.
The Vikings fell behind big early and never got back in, so Murray was severely out-snapped by passing-down back Jerick McKinnon. Although Murray has proven a less-than-exceptional talent, he held down the fort nicely as a between-the-tackles grinder following Dalvin Cook’s Week 4 ACL tear. Murray has averaged 4.0 yards per carry or fewer in three straight seasons, but he is a capable role player and executes more often than not in scoring position. Murray’s 2018 role will depend on McKinnon’s free agency landing spot and Cook’s knee health. Jan 21 - 10:11 PM

Jerick McKinnon (ankle) is practicing in full for Week 5.

It's big news, as it means there will officially be a committee in Dalvin Cook's absence. Latavius Murray will grind between the tackles on early downs, and McKinnon will catch passes/try to change the pace. Ineffective for the Raiders last season, Murray has also had an extremely slow recovery from ankle surgery. It's possible McKinnon eventually pushes him in short-yardage situations. McKinnon comes with more long-term upside, though Murray's short-term floor is higher.

Dalvin Cook is officially listed as the Vikings' starting running back.

Latavius Murray barely practiced this summer, leaving an opening for second-rounder Cook. He burst through it, turning 23 preseason touches into 105 yards. Cook continually impressed in practice. He opens the year as an RB2 with RB1 upside.

Latavius Murray admitted rookie Dalvin Cook is ahead of him in the Vikings’ running back competition.

"Dalvin's already been through OTAs, he's been through the offseason. So, he has that up on me," Murray said. Murray missed the entire spring recovering from surgery and is unlikely to be ready for the start of training camp. The missed time makes Cook the favorite to start Week 1. The Minneapolis Star Tribune expects Murray to open the season as the Vikings’ short-yardage back.
