James White rushed seven times for 45 yards and a touchdown and caught 2-of-6 targets for 21 yards in the Patriots' Super Bowl 52 loss.
Surprisingly playing ahead of Dion Lewis, White tallied the Patriots’ initial first down on a first-drive swing pass that gained 15. The Eagles otherwise contained White in the passing game with sticky coverage from SS Malcolm Jenkins. White did hit pay dirt on the ground with a 26-yard rushing TD in the second quarter. White failed to build on his Super Bowl 51 breakout in 2017, losing snaps to Rex Burkhead and playing a lesser role before the playoffs, where White scored four touchdowns in three postseason games. The Patriots have White under contract through 2020. He should return as the Pats’ primary passing-down back, but free agents Burkhead and Lewis’ whereabouts will determine White’s fantasy outlook. According to NESN’s Doug Kyed, Rex Burkhead and James White have been handling the "majority of the first-team reps" this spring.

No. 31 overall pick Sony Michel has been right behind them, however, and Kyed says it wouldn’t be surprising to see the rookie surpass both Burkhead and White prior to Week 1. Burkhead inked a new three-year deal in March but had injury issues in his first season with New England. In true Patriots fashion, we expect all three backs to be involved week-to-week.

The Boston Herald expects a "big night" for Rex Burkhead and James White in Thursday's opener.

The Patriots' backfield has remained a mystery since coach Bill Belichick proclaimed presumed early-down starter Mike Gillislee still had a "ways to go." Burkhead hype has been bubbling under, while White's pass-catching role is presumed to have grown since Julian Edelman's injury. Burkhead is a high-upside Week 1 dart throw. Gillislee is a volatile RB3/FLEX.

Dion Lewis and James White were listed as the Patriots' starting running backs on the latest depth chart.

Rex Burkhead and Brandon Bolden are with the second team, while injured Mike Gillislee was listed with the threes. Depth charts at this time of year mean very little, but it's notable. Lewis' roster spot was brought into question during the spring. He has since solidified his job, with Bolden the least likely of the six to make the club. Burkhead being ahead of Gillislee is also a developing situation.
