Dating back to the 2007-08 campaign, the top-three players in terms of assists have been Joe Thornton (558), Henrik Sedin (553), and Nicklas Backstrom (540). Given that Backstrom is 29-years-old and therefore still in his prime while Thornton and Sedin are in the twilights of their career, it’s fair to say that Backstrom is the best bet of that group. Even if you take a step back from that and look at the league today, there really isn’t any better source of assists in the league than Backstrom except for Connor McDavid. Backstrom is also coming off a strong season where he had 23 goals and 86 points in 82 contests, so there’s every reason to draft him with confidence as early as the middle of the first round in a standard league.
Updated Oct. 16: Nicklas Backstrom has been named the NHL's third star of the week. Backstrom registered three goals and six assists for nine points in four games during the week ending Oct. 15. He is currently riding a five-game point streak with 11 points over that span.

Even though the Capitals lost the game, Backstrom has put together a pretty nice weekend. He had four points in last night's win against New Jersey and another goal tonight. He cut Philadelphia's lead to 4-2 in the middle frame, but that's as close as the Caps would come to making it a game. Backstrom is now riding a five-game point streak. He has three goals and 11 points in six games this season. He's a must-start every time the Capitals are on the ice.
