After breaking out in 2015-16 with 20 goals and 77 points in 82 games, Evgeny Kuznetsov got off to a slow start in 2016-17. He had just three goals and nine points in his first 23 contests, but after that he bounced back with 16 goals and 50 points in his last 59 games. That still works out to be a dip compared to 2015-16, but Washington is still clearly upbeat about his future given that the Capitals signed him to an eight-year, $62.4 million extension over the summer. The 25-year-old has the potential to live up to that deal as he might be able to even produce a point-per-game pace this season. He’s a bigger risk than other elite forwards just because his relatively short resume, but make no mistake: he is an elite forward.

Evgeny Kuznetsov could be in line to play on Washington's top power-play unit this season.
Kuznetsov skated on the first combination during Tuesday's practice. The Capitals need a replacement for Marcus Johansson, who was traded to New Jersey in the off-season. Kuznetsov was a 77-point player in 2015-16 prior to dropping to 59 points last year. If he secures a spot on Washington's top power-play unit then he stands a great chance to return to the 70-point plateau.

Evgeny Kuznetsov picked up a goal and two assists in Washington's 4-2 preseason win over the Montreal Canadiens.
Kuznetsov opened the scoring with a power play goal that looked way too easy, as he went around veteran Mark Streit like he wasn't even there. The 25-year-old saw his point total come down from 77 in 2015-16 to 59 last season. Don't be surprised if he bounces back in a big way in 2017-18. He has the talent to put together an 80-point season, but he'll have to prove that last year was just a blip on the radar.

Evgeny Kuznetsov will start the regular season on the same line as Alex Ovechkin.
Coach Barry Trotz said the other duo he wants at the start of the year will be Nicklas Backstrom and T.J. Oshie. They will probably be joined by Andre Burakovsky, while a few players will battle for the spot alongside Ovechkin and Kuznetsov.
