Connor McDavid was being billed as a generational talent before he ever played in an NHL game and so far he's lived up to that label. In just his second career season he scored 30 goals and a league-best 100 points in 82 games. We have high hopes for McDavid going forward, but we're hesitant to get too ambitious when talking about his ceiling. After all, Sidney Crosby's 120-point sophomore season is still his career-high, Alex Ovechkin's personal bests of 65 goals and 112 points came in his third season, Evgeni Malkin's career-high of 113 points also came in his third season, and Steven Stamkos set his career-highs of 60 goals and 97 points in his fourth campaign. The point is that while many superstars can stay at the top of their game for a long time, their actual peak often comes early in the modern NHL. So while it's amazing that McDavid is just 20 years old and already has a 100-point season under his belt, expecting him to just continue to set new highs might be overly hopeful. We could definitely see him winning the Art Ross Trophy again this season, we're just not expecting a meaningful jump from his 2016-17 levels of offensive production.
Updated Oct. 22: Connor McDavid saw his four game point streak end on Saturday. The superstar has eight points in seven games (not exactly McDavid type numbers) but he has missed Leon Draisaitl the last four games. Look for McDavid to get hot shortly and reclaim his spot atop the NHL scoring race.

Connor McDavid picked up a pair of assists in Thursday's 2-1 overtime win over the Chicago Blackhawks.
If you haven't seen McDavid's primary assist on Patrick Maroon's first-period goal, you need to watch it right away (click link below). The Oilers captain literally made a mockery of Chicago's top pairing of Duncan Keith and Brent Seabrook before finding Maroon. McDavid also helped set up Mark Letestu's power play goal in the overtime period. McDavid has now collected at least one in five of Edmonton's six games this season. This was also the second multi-point effort of the season for him. He has three goals and five assists in six games in 2017-18. He's the best player in the game.

Jaromir Jagr thinks Connor McDavid has a chance to break Wayne Gretzky's goal scoring record.
"He's a great player," Jagr said of McDavid. "If he would learn how to score on breakaways a little more I think he'd score 150 goals in a season. To score 100 for him...it's possible. I've never seen anything like that in my life, to dominate like that with his speed. With his speed, in this game right now where you cannot hold and grab...wow...it's very dangerous. Probably Wayne and Mario were the same but you could grab them and hold them with the stick. Those rules are just perfect for him. I wouldn't be surprised if some day he scored 100 goals and broke the record." McDavid won the Hart Trophy last season with 30 goals and 100 points in 82 games. He's gotten off to a superb season again by scoring a hat trick in the Oilers' opener. Obviously we're not expecting 100 goals from him, but he is the league's top fantasy option.

Connor McDavid notched three goals in Wednesday's victory against the Flames, becoming just the second player in the NHL's modern era (since 1943-44) with a natural hat trick in the regular season opener.
McDavid joins Radim Vrbata in the elite club. He has such quick hands and amazing skate speed, and he is a threat to make something happen every time he touches the puck. He was clocked at 40.9 kilometers per hour, or 25.4 mph, on his second goal. The favorite to win the 2017-18 Hart Trophy is off to a sensational start.

Connor McDavid is by far the favorite to win the Hart Trophy, based on the betting at Bodog.ca.
According to the betting site, 38% of the money being put forward in Hart Trophy predictions is wagering that McDavid will repeat. No other player is even close to McDavid in that regard as second place is tied between Auston Matthews and Jack Eichel, who each have 8% of the money wagered on them. Obviously this all needs to be taken with a grain of salt, but it does speak to what expectations are going into the campaign. Certainly there are plenty of reasons to believe in McDavid given his immense potential and what he showed during his sophomore campaign, but of course it's a long season and there are plenty of other elite players that will fight for that trophy.
