Sean Monahan's 2016-17 campaign could easily be divided into two sections that offer an extreme contrast. There was his play through Nov. 27 where he had five goals, eight points, and a minus-10 rating in 24 games and everything after that where he recorded 22 goals, 50 points, and a plus-nine rating in 58 contests. His sluggish start might have been due to the added pressure that came with playing in his first big contract - specifically a seven-year deal worth about $44.6 million. He might have also needed some time to adjust to playing under new bench boss Glen Gulutzan. Either way, we're optimistic about what Monahan can do in 2017-18. We're looking for him to flirt with the 30-goal mark and surpass the 60-point milestone.
Updated Oct. 23: Sean Monahan is off to his best start with eight points in eight games. He has five goals and it is far better than last season after eight contests when he had only three goals and nary an assist and was a minus-six. The 23-year-old had eight points last season through 24 games and still ended up with 58 points so he could be in line for 70-75 this season if he stays healthy.

Monahan's fourth of the season came a bit too late for the Flames to complete the comeback. He showed great chemistry playing on a line with Johnny Gaudreau and Jaromir Jagr. The center now has four goals and seven points in seven games so far this season trying to follow up on three straight 55 point-plus seasons in the NHL.

Sean Monahan scored the game-winning goal in overtime and he added an assist with a plus-2 rating in Wednesday's victory in Los Angeles.
Monahan has at least one point in each of his past three outings, including the game-winning goals in both games of the Southern California leg of the road trip. The 22-year-old is just scratching the surface of what he can do and he still has plenty of room to get even better after a 58-point campaign in 2016-17.
