Goalie Outliers

Thursday, August 31, 2017

The rankings you will find in these pages are an average. We took the ranks of Michael Finewax, Brian Rosenbaum, Ryan Dadoun and Corey Abbott to formulate a composite score. Of course, there was no way we were all going to agree on every player. Some of us had unique feelings on certain guys, making them outliers. Here are the right winger rankings and explanations:

Michael Finewax had Devan Dubnyk first. The average draft composite was 4.5.

Devan Dubnyk was the best goalie in the NHL last season for the first 50 games. Both he and the Wild faltered after that, but the Wild are going to be stronger this season and don't have a reliable backup netminder. Dubnyk will carry the Wild to first in their division and I think he will win the Vezina.

Corey Abbott had Ben Bishop 12. The average draft composite was 16.25.

Ben Bishop had to contend with trade rumors, an expiring contract and an oncoming Andrei Vasilevskiy last season. He will get back to being the number one goalie with Dallas this year. The Stars should boast a dangerous offense and the defense should benefit from having Ken Hitchcock behind the bench.  Bishop is being placed in a great position to add to what has been an impressive résumé.  He has collected 130 wins since the 2013-14 season, which ranks him fourth overall. Bishop also has a .920 save percentage and a 2.26 goals-against average during that span.
