| 1 | Jadeveon Clowney | DE | South Carolina Gamecocks | Clowney makes it official, will play in 2013
South Carolina sophomore DE Jadeveon Clowney told local media members that he will play football during the 2013 season. "I used to play around with the boys (and say) I'm going to sit out, but ... I am going to go to school and play," Clowney said. The soon to be junior ran a 4.54 40-yd dash this winter, which is actually slower than he ran in high school, but we think the added weight had something to do with it. In fact, Clowney is up to 273 pounds from his 260 pound playing weight last year. He also took out a $5 million insurance policy in case of an injury. |
| 2 | Sammy Watkins | WR | Clemson Tigers | Sammy Watkins carted to locker room (ankle)
Clemson sophomore WR Sammy Watkins was carted to the locker room from the sideline after suffering an apparent right ankle injury. On one of the first plays of the game, Watkins took a carry form the backfield and was immediately blown up by Barkevious Mingo. Watkins was taken in for x-rays, which came back negative, but left the field with a towel on his head and was unable to put weight on the injury. |
| 3 | Marqise Lee | WR | USC Trojans | Feldman: Good chance WR Lee sees D snaps
CBS Sports' Bruce Feldman writes "there's a good chance" USC junior WR Marqise Lee will see snaps on defense this season. There was talk of Lee attempting to convince coaches to allow him to play some cornerback last season. The vertical receiver ranks No. 5 on Feldman's "Freak List." USC receiver coach Tee Martin added "He's gotta be in the top five of the most freakish athletes I've ever been around." |
| 4 | Cyrus Kouandjio | T | Alabama Crimson Tide | Kouandjio taking over at LT for Crimson Tide
Sophomore LT Cyrus Kouandjio will take over the blindside and move senior Barrett Jones to C. Kouamdjio, who stands at 6'6/314 pounds, played in Alabama's first eight games last season and helped the team average 230 rushing yards per contest. His year ended early due to a severe knee injury which required surgery. Still, displacing last season's Outland Trophy winner in Jones at left tackle means head coach Nick Saban has plenty of confidence in Kouandjio's ability and recovery. |
| 5 | Austin Seferian-Jenkins | TE | Washington Huskies | UW TE Seferian-Jenkins suspended indefinitely
Washington sophomore TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins has been suspended indefinitely following his DUI arrest on March 9. Seferian-Jenkins' was also involved in an accident which caused head injuries, leading to a visit to the hospital. These kinds of suspensions are tricky in terms of how long they historically last, but it is too early to know if Seferian-Jenkins will miss any practice time this summer or in the fall. He enters the 2013 season as the top prospect at his position. |
| 6 | Teddy Bridgewater | QB | Louisville Cardinals | Bridgewater completed 71% between 6-15 yds
Louisville junior QB Teddy Bridgewater completed 71 percent of his throws that traveled six to 15 yards beyond the line of scrimmage. The number is ridiculously high, since many college passers average around 50 to 60 percent in that intermediate area. Bridgewater is a pure pocket passer, with a great feel for pressure to evade it and find receivers downfield. "When you break down his incompletions, he threw into coverage less than any QB in the past draft class and flat out missed his receivers less as well," according to Greg Peshek of The Sideline View. |
| 7 | Giovani Bernard | RB | North Carolina Tar Heels | Bengals draft RB Bernard with No. 37 pick
Bengals selected North Carlona RB Giovani Bernard with the No. 37 overall pick. Bernard (5-9, 202) amassed 2,481 yards and 25 touchdowns on 423 college carries (5.9 YPC) before turning pro following his redshirt sophomore year. Perhaps most impressively, he averaged 46 receptions per season and scored twice on punt returns. Bernard ran a 4.53 forty with a 10-foot-2 broad jump at the Combine. A terrific receiver with some Brian Westbrook to his game, Bernard lacks physicality as a runner but combines lightning-quick, rapid-fire cuts with fantastic acceleration and lateral jukes. |
| 8 | Nick O'Leary | TE | Florida State Seminoles | O'Leary will return to field for Noles soon
Florida State sophomore TE Nick O'Leary is expected to return to the field against Wake Forest after a nagging thigh injury held him out of Saturday's game. O'Leary was expected to take on a larger, pass catching, role this season, but he has yet to make a major impact. The sophomore did register two catches for 33 yards in the season opener against Murray State. Center Bryan Stork is also set to return from a neck injury. |
| 9 | De'Anthony Thomas | RB | Oregon Ducks | De'Anthony Thomas ranks as Kiper's top RB
Oregon junior De'Anthony Thomas ranks as Mel Kiper's top draft-eligible RB for the 2014 Draft. "Is he a running back?" Kiper asks. "He's a little bit of everything, but he's a running back on my board because handing him the ball is the quickest way to get it to him, and getting him the ball is the most important thing... Thomas will never be a bulk-carry runner, and he doesn't have the route-running skills of a guy like Tavon Austin, who he might be compared to based on the burst." Oregon will likely be running a similar offense in 2013, but it will be interesting to see if anyone takes a step back after the school lost Chip Kelly to the NFL. |
| 10 | Michael Dyer | RB | Arkansas State Red Wolves | Michael Dyer will not play football this year
Former Auburn RB Michael Dyer will enroll at a school close to his hometown of Litle Rock, Arkansas and will not play football this year, according to ESPN's Joe Schad. Dyer reportedly tweeted yesterday "College ain't for everybody" but it comes from the same account that said the running back was transferring to FCS level Prairie View A&M. He later claimed the same account was hacked. In order to have played anywhere this season, Dyer would have to be granted a double transfer waiver by the NCAA. It has been a crazy year for Dyer, who transferred to Arkansas State to follow coach Gus Malzahn, but his time there ended before it even began due to a "violation of team rules" including a speeding citation. He remains on track for the 2013 NFL Draft, but obviously sitting out a full season of football will not help his chances of being more than a third day pick. |
| 11 | Randall Telfer | TE | USC Trojans | Trojans TE Telfer to miss four weeks (knee)
USC junior TE Randall Telfer will likely miss four weeks after undergoing knee surgery to repair a torn meniscus. Teifer only finished with 100 yards receiving and four touchdowns in 2012, a dip form his 2011 production, but he has plenty of talent and has been talked up by head coach Lane Kiffin. His running mate Xavier Grimble has also missed time this spring. |
| 12 | Malcolm Brown | RB | Texas Longhorns | Texas RB Brown expected to play Saturday
Texas sophomore RB Malcolm Brown is expected to play Saturday against Iowa State. Brown has missed the past five games with a sprained left ankle. The sophomore has not practiced very much in that span. The last time he touched the field, Brown rushed for 128 yards and two touchdowns against Ole Miss. |
| 13 | James Wilder, Jr. | RB | Florida State Seminoles | Wilder charged after not appearing in court
Florida State sophomore RB James Wilder Jr. was arrested and charged with failing to appear in court. Wilder was expected to appear in court after being charged on driving with a suspended license. Everyone makes mistakes, but Wilder may not have taken the process seriously in this situation. |
| 14 | Antonio Richardson | T | Tennessee Volunteers |
|
| 15 | Isaiah Crowell | RB | Georgia Bulldogs | Legend Pollack wishes Crowell went JUCO route
Georgia legend David Pollack wishes former Bulldog RB Isaiah Crowell decided to go to a Junior College, with the aspirations of working back up to a FBS school, rather than transferring to Alabama St. Pollack cites Cam Newton, who transferred to Blinn Junior College after running into trouble at Florida, as an example. It certainly was an option, taking a few steps back in order to move forward, but Cam's off field issues were not quite as significant as Crowell's two felony charges. In either situation, Crowell will be able to immediately play this season and avoid redshirting as long as he does not receive jail time. |
| 16 | Braxton Miller | QB | Ohio State Buckeyes | Huard: Braxton Miller ranks 5th among '14 QBs
ESPN's Brock Huard ranks Ohio State junior Braxton Miller as the No. 5 draft-eligible QB for the 2014 draft. Miller checks in behind Teddy Bridgewater, Tajh Boyd, Aaron Murray, and Marcus Mariota. However, Huard does place Miller ahead of big names like A.J. McCarron, Johnny Manziel, Stephen Morris, Logan Thomas, and Derek Carr. "Accuracy can't always be taught, but neither can winning and toughness," Huard writes. "If his passing efficiency improves, Miller's stock will soar and NFL teams will clamor for a leader they couldn't find in the 2013 draft." |
| 17 | Blake Bell | QB | Oklahoma Sooners | Blake Bell has more rush TDs than passes
Oklahoma junior QB Blake Bell has more rushing touchdowns (24) than career passing attempts (20). The "Belldozer" was used in a specific short yardage package for the last two seasons, which also set back Landry Jones' progression in those situations. The Sooners have an excellent slot target in Jalen Saunders, but it will be Bell's job to get him the ball in stride. |
| 18 | Sean Mannion | QB | Oregon State Beavers | Mannion and Vaz will compete for top QB job
Junior Sean Mannion and senior Cody Vaz will continue to compete for Oregon State's starting QB job. Head coach Mike Riley said each quarterback played one series during the school's spring game. Both signal callers started multiple games last season. "I thought it was good," Riley said of the spring game. "We got out of it what we wanted to. But we’ve still got to get better." |
| 19 | Clint Trickett | QB | West Virginia Mountaineers | Former Noles QB Trickett transferring to WVU
Former FSU junior QB Clint Trickett is transferring to West Virginia, according to ESPN's Joe Schad. Schad also notes that Trickett, "is eligible to compete for the starting position this season." He added "Trickett chose West Virginia over USF and Auburn. Trickett believes he is an ideal fit for the West Virginia offense." It will surely be an interesting quarterback competition for Dana Holgorsen this summer. |
| 20 | Jeff Driskel | QB | Florida Gators | Muschamp happy with Driskel's progression
Florida head coach Will Muschamp is happy with junior QB Jeff Driskel's offseason progression. "Again, I've been nothing but pleased to this point of how he's attacked the offseason mentally and how he's worked," Muschamp said. "It's watching film, it's understanding schematically where to take the ball, (understanding) where you're protected. The film study, the mental repetition is so vital for all players, but especially as cerebral as the (quarterback) position can be, that's vital." |
