Newcastle United were able to avoid relegation on the final day of the season with a 2-0 win over West Ham United.
It was a nervy atmosphere at St. James' Park as expected, and though the Magpies showed themselves better in the opening half of the match than they had in quite a long time, anxiety continued to grow around the stadium as they went into the locker room at halftime with the game still 0-0. The breakthrough came in the 54th minute, when Jonas Gutierrez sent a cross toward the Hammers' far post and found Moussa Sissoko, who headed it in strongly. The job was not finished though, as a second goal was needed to truly feel safe and it came courtesy of Gutierrez who sent a strike that was helped by a deflection into the net for his first goal in over two years. Newcastle ended February looking like they would only need one more positive result to avoid relegation. Though there is plenty of issues with the club, they can rest easy now that they got the job done in time. Sun, May 24, 2015 11:58:00 AM

Jonas Gutierrez has made the most of his two starts since returning from his cancer battle, giving John Carver reason to stick with the veteran for the run in.

In his two starts, first against Sunderland and then over the weekend against Swansea City, Gutierrez has put up some crooked numbers, 14 and 13 to be exact. Fantastic production when you consider the overall form of the club. He goes for under 6m in the Yahoo game currently and if you believe Carver will stick with the Argentinian (which he should) then he should be up for consideration as a budget option in midfield. The Magpies travel to what will certainly be a raucous King Power Stadium to take on Leicester City this weekend.

Newcastle United continue to stumble their way to the finish line with another lackluster display against Sunderland as they were the losers of a 1-0 Tyne-Wear derby final.

Some of the blame for the Magpies form has to go to their laundry list of injured players but not all of it. They are in desperate need of a threat up top but John Carver continues to witness Ayoze Perez and Emmanuel Riviere perform poorly. Perez in fact had a major opportunity with just a couple of minutes remaining as Daryl Janmaat set him up perfectly but Perez lost control of the ball. The only silver lining here was the start handed to Jonas Gutierrez, his first in nearly two years.

Jonas Gutierrez took to Instagram to showcase his fitness and is declaring himself ready to start for Newcastle United, as well he should.

With the chaos currently afoot among the Magpies and their stumbling form, it makes all the sense in the world to grant the veteran his wish as he has already made two substitution appearances. It may just be the shot in the arm the club needs to grab some points down the stretch when they really have no other motivation to do so as was evident throughout most of their loss to Swansea this past weekend. If Gutierrez cant inspire his teammates, no one or nothing can. He is available for the rock-bottom price of 1.69m in Yahoo and makes for a fine roll of the dice as a cheap fifth midfielder who will provide depth on your bench and perhaps more down the stretch.

Jonas Gutierrez, out for a year and a half battling testicular cancer, could make his return to the Newcastle squad in Week 27.

More so than being particularly relevant to the outcome of the match with Aston Villa or fantasy results, this is just a good story. The 31-year-old Argentine has fought what appears to be a successful battle with testicular cancer. Beyond just surviving that fight which is a win, being able to resume his career in the top flight is just icing on the cake. Surely it will be a boost for others fighting various forms of the disease who follow the Premier League as well as a great reminder for all supporters to keep up with preventive medical appointments.

Jonas Gutierrez has been discharged from the hospital after having surgery for testicular cancer.

Gutierrez had an operation in September to treat his cancer diagnosis and was discharged earlier this week. He is still expected to miss the remainder of the season and at this age, it's unknown if he'll try to make an attempt to return next season. He has 10 goals in 177 matches for Newcastle.

Jonas Gutierrez, on loan from Newcastle United, is available for Norwich this weekend after missing time with injury.

It's not clear where Gutierrez fits in with this Norwich side, though he could at least provide cover in a variety of positions. In a relegation scrap, I guess any news is good news.

Norwich City have signed Jonas Gutierrez on loan from Newcastle United until June 30.

It's not clear yet whether or not Gutierrez will be a regular starter or if he'll provide any real fantasy value, but according to manager Chris Hughton the former Magpie can play multiple roles for his new team. "Jonas can play on either flank and in a central position, so he’s a very welcome addition and we look forward to working with him."

Alan Pardew has indicated that he has a full-strength squad ahead of the home match against Norwich City, and that includes Jonas Gutierrez, who has been missing since late August with a hamstring injury.

Gutierrez will probably find himself a useful, but not automatic, choice for Newcastle adn his fantasy relevance is all but non-existent.

Jonas Gutierrez, who went off at the end of the first half against Manchester City with a hamstring injury, is not available for this weekend's match against West Ham United.

Gutierrez's injury was the rancid icing on top of the awful cake that was the Magpies' capitulation to Manchester City. Vurnon Anita replaced the Argentinian last weekend, but he may be needed to cover to Cheik Tiote, who is also a doubt for the West Ham match. Sammy Ameobi or Sylvain Marveaux could be in line for the start.
