John Carver stated that midfielder Mehdi Abeid is back in contention and will be in the squad for the Tyne-Wear derby on Sunday.
While any fitness boost is a positive one, Abeid's return doesn't exactly fix Newcastle's woes. They are still missing key players in defense, midfield and forward with Fabricio Coloccini, Cheik Tiote and Papiss Cisse still out. Lucky for them, they face their rivals this weekend who are having their own struggles and are vulnerable. In the words of current manager John Carver the Newcastle training ground resembles a "hospital ward" given the number of players currently sidelined while the news of another setback – this time to midfielder Mehdi Abeid – will only serve to compound matters further.

Abeid has already missed a large chunk of the season because of a broken toe and in the absence of Cheick Tiote [knee] the Algerian international was beginning to stake a claim in the side after starting the two previous games. However the youngster who was partially to blame for gifting a goal to Manchester United last time out will now be missing for around three weeks after suffering a thigh strain in training ruling 9 players out of the trip to Goodison. The returning Jack Colback is expected to slot back into the eleven while Remy Cabella is also pushing for a start in a 4-5-1 playing behind the lone striker.

Mehdi Abeid appears to be in line to start for Newcastle United through the end of the season, provided he can stay fit and avoid any suspension.

Things got a bit hairy for the Magpies in central midfield when Cheik Tiote was lost for the season due to injury and Jack Colback had to serve a suspension. Colback has completed his punishment and will slot straight back in to his role, which will likely see Abeid opposite him. Abeid led all Newcastle players in fantasy points with their loss to Manchester United by collecting 12, eight of which came from intercepting eight passes. The performance virtually doubled his price, but he still runs for under 6m.

Mehdi Abeid - M - Newcastle United

Newcastle midfielder Mehdi Abeid made his Premier League debut against Liverpool this past weekend.

Abeid says he still has a lot to learn and we believe him. He is only 22 years old and has a lot of room to grow. With that said, his first game is far from a disaster. Abeid registered two passes intercepted, three tackles won, two successful crosses, a corner won, and a foul committed in his seven fantasy point performance against Liverpool. If he continues to play well, consider him on the barn-door next week as his price is only £ 5.15 M.
