Steve Agnew has confirmed that both Dani Ayala and Grant Leadbitter are doubtful for Sunday's match against Manchester City at the Riverside Stadium.
Ayala was forced off after twisting his ankle during Wednesday's 1-0 victory over Sunderland while Leadbitter missed the last two matches because of a hamstring injury, putting their availability in question. If the pair is unable to play, then Fabio and Adam Clayton will likely be handed starts. Middlesbrough cannot be relegated this weekend but sit six points from safety with five matches remaining, meaning Agnew's side must take at least a point to keep their slime survival hopes alive. Middlesbrough defender Daniel Ayala could miss Saturdays FA Cup quarter-final clash against Manchester City because of injury.

The 26-year-old was making only his second Premier League start of the year on Saturday having struggled during the first half of the campaign due to an ongoing and persistent ankle ligament problem. However, Ayala lasted barely 10 minutes at the Bet365 Stadium after pulling up sharply during the opening exchanges due to hamstring complaint which is likely to keep the defender on the sidelines for at least a few weeks. With Calum Chambers [stress fracture of the foot] out until April, Aitor Karanka must assess his defensive options with a cup semi-final place within reach and key league fixtures against Hull and Swansea coming up. Bernardo Espinosa would be the obvious replacement in a like for like, but Antonio Barragan is also available and Karanka may look to involve the Spaniard this weekend to gain some much-needed match fitness.

Dani Ayala will be available for Tuesday's match against West Brom after serving a three-match ban.

With George Friend and Calum Chamber ruled out due to injuries, Ayala's timely return should see him make the squad for Tuesday's match at the Riverside Stadium. The 26-year-old has made six appearances at center back this season, and would be a top candidate for the starting XI should manager Aitor Karanka opt to use a back three. Speaking to the media on Monday, Aitor Karanka said: "George Friend and Calum Chambers will miss the game, but Antonio Barragan is back in training...Dani Ayala is back after suspension and that is good news."

Daniel Ayala will miss Middlesbrough's next three matches after a wrongful dismissal appeal against his FA Cup red card was rejected.

Ayala's first appearances since October came to an end shortly after Middlesbrough took the lead against Sheffield Wednesday in their third round FA Cup tie, as the defender was shown a straight red for an aggressive challenge on Fernando Forestieri. Middlesbrough appealed the red card but saw their claim rejected by the FA, who confirmed that Ayala must serve the three-match ban. Ayala will now miss matches against Watford, West Ham and Accrington Stanley before being eligible to return on January 31st against West Brom.

Middlesbrough defender Dani Ayala could feature in Monday's fixture with Hull City, according to manager Aitor Karanka.

Ayala, who has missed the last four league matches through injury, could make his return this week. "Dani is training with the team and he is ready, it’s just my decision," manager Aitor Karanka said. "I have to take it all in and we will see." This is good news for Middlesbrough as they will most likely be without fullback George Friend for Monday's fixture with Hull.

Daniel Ayala is struggling to shake off an ongoing ankle problem as frustrations continue to grow for Middlesbrough manager Aitor Karanka.

The Spanish defender, who recently signed a contract extension, has been limited to just four league starts after sustaining an ankle ligament injury during the club's summer training camp. Ayala missed the remainder of pre-season and the setback meant he was unable to start his first game until the end of August. But, despite completing 388 Premier League minutes in 2016/17, Ayala’s ankle continues to cause him problems and Karanka is uncertain when he will be fit enough to re-join the group. "I don’t know how he is," said the Boro boss. "I have spoken with the doctor, but two weeks ago, he told me he was going to start training, and then on Monday he called me and said it would be next week. He is with the medical department and he is working with them. When he is fit, he will train."

Middlesbrough manager Aitor Karanka confirms serious doubt over the fitness of Daniel Ayala ahead of Saturday's trip to Manchester City.

Center back Daniel Ayala, who missed last weekend's match against Bournemouth after suffering a recurrence of the ankle injury which plagued him last season, could be sidelined for the second straight match. "The only one who I think could miss out is Dani Ayala," Karanka said. "The doctor told me he could be ready but we will wait and see." Ayala's absence would likely see Karanka select Calum Chambers and Ben Gibson as his central defenders.

Middlesbrough's surprising undefeated run to start the season came to an end in a 2-1 home loss to Crystal Palace.

The Teessiders kicked off the season with a win and two draws to maintain a quiet unbeaten streak but Crystal Palace's revamped attack proved too much for the newly-promoted side. Former Norwich City defender Daniel Ayala scored his first Premier League goal in the 38th minute off a Stewart Downing corner to tie the game at 1-1 following Christian Benteke's opening goal, but Wilfried Zaha's 47th-minute goal proved to be the match-winner. Alvaro Negredo and Cristhian Stuani failed to get going, in part due to a couple of tough saves by Steve Mandanda while Viktor Fischer made his debut start along with Adama Traore coming off the bench for his Boro now.

Norwich defender Daniel Ayala, who was on loan at Championship side Middlesbrough, has joined them on a permanent deal.

Norwich are thin at center back with injury to Michael Turner leaving them with just Ryan Bennett and Sebastien Bassong as recognized players at the position. Surely the Canaries will be looking to bring in cover before the transfer window closes.

Norwich City defender Daniel Ayala will join managerless Championship side Middlesbrough on an emergency 3-month loan.

Ayala has never impressed since moving from Liverpool, and is firmly behind Sebastien Bassong, Michael Turner, and the likes of Ryan Bennett and Russell Martin in the pecking order. A loan will hopefully give him a chance at first-team football, and it may be that the Championship is his level.
