Arsenal’s hopes of offloading forgotten man Joel Campbell during the summer transfer window have suffered a major setback.
The 25-year-old joined the club in 2011 but has made just 23 Premier League appearances having spent most of his time away from the Emirates on-loan. Arsene Wenger was said to be keen on selling Campbell during this window with his current deal set to expire next year. However, any move now looks to have been scuppered after he suffered a serious knee injury during his country’s Gold Cup draw with Canada. "We will see what the doctors say, but it is a pretty big tear and I will have to undergo an operation," he told the waiting press. Initial reports suggest Campbell could be sidelined for around 6 months although tests are ongoing. "I come to the country to wait on what the doctors say to see when I have to have an operation. I have to have an operation, but I do not know anything about times." Fri, Jul 14, 2017 06:58:00 PM

Joel Campbell came on as a substitute and scored a brace as Costa Rica beat the US 4-0 to extend the Americans' record to 0-9-2 in Costa Rica in World Cup qualifying.

The Americans were abject at the back and a series of defensive mistakes conspired to undermine any chances the USA had of breaking their losing streak away from home in this rivalry. John Brooks was particularly guilty of mistakes that led directly to Costa Rican goals but there were no real bright spots as the Americans continued to hold up the table on zero points in CONCACAF World Cup qualifying.

Wide attacker Joel Campbell will join Sporting Lisbon on loan for the 2016-17 season according to the club's Twitter feed.

With Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Theo Walcott, Alex Iwobi, and maybe even Jeff Reine-Adelaide in front of him for minutes at the right attacking spot, Joel Campbell has been shipped off to Sporting Lisbon in search of regular playing time. Campbell made a solid contribution to the first team last season when injuries gave him an opportunity but with no stand-out attribute and a bunch of more talented players in front of him, his future likely lies elsewhere.

With Arsenal's attacking contingent almost entirely healthy, Joel Campbell seems likely to be the odd man out starting with Week 23.

Despite the fact that Campbell excelled, the Costa Rican is highly likely to find himself relegated to the bench with Alexis Sanchez, Theo Walcott, Olivier Giroud and Mesut Ozil all reportedly healthy. An argument could be made that Campbell deserves to start over Walcott who has struggled since returning from injury but given the investment in Walcott overall and the fact that John Terry, never fast in the first place, is calcifying before our eyes, it's hard to see Wenger sitting TW14.

Former Olympiokos loanee Joel Campbell has taken his opportunity in the Arsenal starting line-up and run with it as he played a crucial role in Arsenal going through to the knockout stages of the Champions League.

Campbell contributed a fantastic assist for the goal that saw Arsenal move on but it was his willingness to play both ways, in stark contrast to Theo Walcott who failed to backtrack all evening long, that really distinguished the Costa Rican on Wednesday. Arsene Wenger switched the two wide players early in the first half and Campbell stopped the bleeding that Walcott had been allowing down the Olympiokos attacking left side. With Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will have to work hard to dislodge Campbell if he wants to get a run of starts.

Joel Campbell is likely to get his first Premier League start of the season in Week 11 against Swansea at the Liberty Stadium.

Arsenal have failed to get a great deal of production from the right side of their attacking midfield group thus far this season. Aaron Ramsey has always looked a bit out of place in that spot and only managed a single goal before going out injured against Bayern Munich. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain scored a great goal against Chelsea in the Community Shield but has struggled since then to make an impact. The notion that Arsenal will be taking a major step down with the insertion of Campbell seems unlikely even if Campbell hasn't shown much to date. Arsenal have struggled against Swansea but Campbell is worth a waiver wire claim in deeper leagues but he probably should be starting for you unless you, like Arsenal, are experiencing an injury crisis of epic proportions.

Arsene Wenger praised Calum Chambers and Joel Campbell who will both be given starts in Arsenal's Capital One Cup match Tuesday against Sheffield Wednesday.

Arsenal typically uses the League Cup and early rounds of the FA Cup as a showcase for young players and he has indicated that Joel Campbell and Calum Chambers will both feature on Tuesday. Chambers is in need of some success experiences after having a rough time playing in a variety of roles over his first season and change with the Gunners. Playing centrally is certainly his future and the more repetitions he can get there the better. Campbell is probably destined for the exit door but some productive appearances in addition to some solid loan results should boost his value.

Sky Sports Italia and The Express are reporting that Costa Rican forward Joel Campbell will leave Arsenal for Palermo on a permanent deal.

No word on the value of the deal or the length of the contract that Campbell might sign but the story seems fairly definitive that a deal will happen. Campbell hasn't made a dent in the senior squad since his capture so losing him is highly unlikely to have an impact. Any funds recouped on Campbell are unlikely to make a significant impact on either Arsenal's financial performance as a club or on their ability to buy a replacement.

Joel Campbell was extremely dangerous in Costa Rica's 1-0 loss to Mexico in the Gold Cup.

Campbell was once again fantastic for his country but he failed to score and Costa Rica were ultimately knocked out of the Gold Cup. He had a good strike in the 53rd minute that ended up sailing over the bar and also had a great run towards the end of the match where his shot was barely saved by goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa. The match was decided on a 120th minute penalty which was shown to be extremely controversial by replays. Mexico will face Panama in the semi-final in what seems to be an easy matchup for them.

A Turkish newspaper has linked Arsenal forward Joel Campbell with a €10 million move from Arsenal to Fenerbahce this summer.

After yet another productive loan spell away from Arsenal, this one at Villarreal, Joel Campbell appears likely to be leaving Arsenal on a permanent basis this summer. Campbell seems to be getting farther from playing a significant role at Arsenal rather than closer. If Fenerbahce, or someone else, comes through with a fee similar to the €10 million mooted in this rumor, it seems likely that Campbell will be sold.

Villarreal have reached agreement with Arsenal for the sale of center-back Gabriel Paulista, with the Gunners forward Joel Campbell heading to the Spanish club on loan for the rest of the season.

The deal was agreed on Saturday evening, shortly before Villarreal's Primera Division match against Levante kicked off at El Madrigal. It comes at a good time for Campbell who has made just four appearances for the club this season, totaling 41 minutes in all.

Costa Rica were eliminated in the quarter-finals of the World Cup after losing 4-3 to the Netherlands in a penalty shootout.

Costa Rica played well in this World Cup but were simply outmatched by the European side. The Netherlands dominated possession and created danger but were rejected by Keylor Navas over and over again. At the end, the Dutch penalty takers were pure class and didn't miss a single penalty. Costa Rica go home proud after having exceeded all expectations in coming out of group D that features heavyweights Italy, Uruguay, and England.

Costa Rica defeated Greece 5-3 on penalties in the World Cup round of 16.

Costa Rica went up 1-0 in the second half on a nice Bryan Ruiz goal but were shortly after reduced to 10 men after Oscar Duarte was sent off. They defended for their lives but Socratis Papastathopoulos equalized in the 90th minute to send the game into extra time. Costa Rica defended successfully for 30 minutes to push the match to penalties. In penalties, every kick was successful until Gekas missed Greece's fourth penalty. Michael Umana then slotted home to win it for Costa Rica. They go on to face the Netherlands in the quarter-finals; Greece are eliminated.
