Gael Clichy's Manchester City contract has expired will not be renewed according to an announcement from the club.
Clichy's move from the Emirates to the Etihad was one of the early moves that City made as they started to build a squad that could contend for Premier League and Champions League honors. While he spent most of his City tenure battling Aleksandar Kolarov for the starting left back spot, he did manage to collect two Premier League winners medals and feature in 138 matches for the club. He could still catch on elsewhere in the Premier League, perhaps a little farther down the table and be a productive player. He will be available on a free transfer this summer. Manchester City defender Gael Clichy confirmed that he will not return to the club next season.

In an interview with "Sky Sports" at a fan Q&A event, Clichy said that he has played his last game at City when asked whether he would play alongside Joe Hart next year: "It's hard. I'm not sure whether or not Joe will be here next season, and I won't be here next season." Clichy's contract is up this summer and looks to be the second City defender to confirm his exit with Pablo Zabaleta receiving a sendoff last week at the Etihad. The Frenchman joined from Arsenal in 2011 and won two Premier League titles with the side.

Aleksandar Kolarov looks set to keep his place in the Manchester City line-up after fellow defender Gael Clichy tweaked a muscle in his back.

Kolarov came in for only his fifth Premier League start of the calendar year on Saturday after Clichy suffered an injury in training on Friday. The Frenchman is not expected to recover with Kolarov poised for another chance to shine at Newcastle. Raheem Sterling and Vincent Kompany are back in full training and both players will be considered for the midweek clash on Tyneside. Meanwhile, David Silva could return as he manages an ongoing ankle problem but Samir Nasri remains a big doubt after he limped off against Chelsea due to a muscular injury.

Manuel Pellegrini expressed hope that defender Gael Clichy and midfielder Fabian Delph could return from their respective injury layoffs for Week 12.

Clichy has yet to play for the first team this season after suffering an ankle injury in the preseason. Meanwhile, Delph has succumbed to two separate hamstring injuries that has kept him out for much of the season so far. Their returns could put pressure on Aleksandar Kolarov and Fernandinho, but that still seems to be a couple weeks away.

Gael Clichy's prognosis had been a bit murky thus far but Manuel Pelligrini clarified this week that the left back would be out another six or seven weeks.

While this is bad news for Clichy and fans of depth at the left back position, it is great for Aleksandar Kolarov and everyone who took a risk on picking him up in fantasy leagues. By no means a sure starter, Kolarov has been the most productive defender in most formats thus far with three clean sheets and a goal to his credit as well as a bundle of peripheral stats. Another nearly two months of starts will be a huge bonus for managers who might have been getting nervous at the potential return of last season's regular starter.

Gael Clichy could reclaim his starting spot from Aleksandar Kolarov as soon as Week 35 against Spurs at White Hart Lane.

Clichy has been out with a minor injury leaving Kolarov to get a few starts in a row. Clichy was widely criticized for his performance in City's Manchester Derby loss to local rivals Manchester United. He was particularly poor attempting to mark Marouane Fellaini. On the basis of that poor performance it remains to be seen if Clichy is restored immediately to the starting line-up.

Manuel Pellegrini is sweating on the fitness of a number of his first team players after Gael Clichy, James Milner and Vincent Kompany picked up injuries during the derby loss to Manchester United. However the Chilean has been boosted by the news that David Silva returned to training less than 48 hours after the Spanish midfielder was taken to hospital with suspected collar and cheekbone fractures.

Silva needed medical attention for several minutes and as the player left the field on a stretcher [requiring oxygen] the early signs did not look good; however after further tests the player was released on Sunday evening. The sight of Silva in training on Tuesday will be welcomed by City who have a growing injury list with up-to 7-players at risk of missing out against Aston Villa in GW34. Wilfried Bony [ankle and knee] is struggling while Gael Clichy and Samir Nasri [unspecified] are doubts. James Milner [knee] is ongoing and Vincent Kompany may not play again this term.

Manchester City's Gael Clichy filled in at right-back against Newcastle on Sunday and put in a magnificent display to help his side to victory.

It was a surprise to see the Frenchman line-up on the right in place of Pablo Zabaleta, who hasn't quite recovered from his long summer, with Aleksandar Kolarov on the left. But Clichy didn't let anyone down as he won eight tackles, intercepted four passes and generally looked awesome. When you throw in clean sheet points it was a monster week in the Yahoo game, with a return of 18 points, and we'll be monitoring the full-back over the coming weeks to see if he can keep up this form.

Left back Gael Clichy has been ruled out of Manchester City's match against Stoke City, along with skipper Vincent Kompany, Micah Richards and new signing Martin Demichelis.

Clichy's absence is especially interesting to fantasy managers as it opens the door for Aleksandar Kolarov to start. While Kolarov in reality is not a highly rated defender, he does possess an arsenal of attacking ability, will be on plenty of set-pieces and delivers crosses and key passes that tend to turn into assists. Investment is recommended here.

Manchester City left-back Gael Clichy has signed a new four-year deal that commits him to the club until 2017.

Clichy was one of the more consistent City performers throughout the season and has been duly rewarded with a new and improved contract. The deal is likely to see Aleksandar Kolarov on the bench for much of the new campaign, although the Serbian may seek a move away from the Etihad after starting just 9 league games this term.
