Manchester City will be without three starting defenders when the club faces off with Southampton on Saturday as Pablo Zabaleta, Vincent Kompany and Eliaquim Mangala were all ruled out with various injuries.
Manager Manuel Pellegrini said at his weekly press conference that Zabaleta has aggravated a preexisting knee injury while Mangala will not play this week: "Zabaleta is out for a couple of weeks more – he has the same injury in the ligament in his knee. He needs a treatment now so he will be out for at least ten days, while Mangala has a muscle problem in his hamstring but I think he will be fit for Stoke." Kompany, meanwhile, continues to struggle with a calf injury that has bothered him for the past month. Martin Demichelis, Bacary Sagna and Nicolas Otamendi are expected to fill in. Nov 27 - 7:01 PM

Pablo Zabaleta is set to return from a knee injury ahead of schedule in hopes of being in the team to face Liverpool in Week 13.

The Argentine defender has missed the last three weeks after injuring the same knee that kept him out for the beginning of the season. But Zabaleta said he is hoping to return this week after taking the international break to recover: "I am doing OK, progressing well and trying to be fit for the visit of Liverpool after the international break...hopefully everything will go well and I'll be available for our next game." Once fully fit, Zabaleta is expected to challenge Bacary Sagna for the starting right-back position, but it could still be a couple more weeks.

Manchester City defender Pablo Zabaleta will head back to the training table after suffering another medial knee ligament injury on the same knee that kept him over to start the season.

However, Manuel Pellegrini relieved fears that the right-back could be set for a longer spell on the sidelines: "Pablo has the same injury in his medial ligament – it’s not so bad as the first one he had. We soon have the international break so he should be fit after that - in 25 days he will be ready." Bacary Sagna will most likely take over at right-back just as he has done throughout the season while Zabaleta is in line to return for Week 13.

Manuel Pellegrini has confirmed that Pablo Zabaleta suffered a recurrence of the medial knee ligament injury which kept the 30-year-old out for over a month earlier this season.

Zabaleta will be assessed to determine the full extent of the problem but initial reports suggest that the defender will miss at least 4-6 weeks. Zabaleta has made just two Premier League starts this season, however, in his absence Bacary Sagna has flourished playing regular first team football for the first time since his arrival from Arsenal. City take on Norwich this weekend and Pellegrini is hoping to be able to call upon one or two of his returning stars. Samir Nasri is back with the main group while the Chilean remains "optimistic" that David Silva could play a part. Fabian Delph is targeting a return against his former employers in GW12 after stepping up his rehab on Monday.

Bacary Sagna looks set to continue his run in the City first team after Pablo Zabaleta was ruled out for up-to a month after damaging knee ligaments in training.

The Argentine had been working his way back to full fitness following his late return – Copa America – but this latest setback will hand Sagna an opportunity to establish himself for the first time since joining City back in 2014. On the opposite flank Aleksandar Kolarov also looks to have nailed down a starting berth for the foreseeable following an outstanding start to the season. The Serbian has now started nine consecutive PL matches and with Gael Clichy not match fit the 29 year-old dead ball specialist is worth some serious fantasy consideration with games against Watford, Palace, West Ham and Sunderland coming up.

Pablo Zabaleta is expected to return to the starting line-up on Tuesday after missing the Copa America opener against Paraguay because of a minor ankle sprain.

Zabaleta played every minute of the World Cup finals in Brazil under former coach Alejandro Sabella and the Manchester City full-back plays a pivotal role for his country. His timely return will be welcomed after Argentina let a 2-goal lead slip last weekend and any further mistakes against their main rivals - Uruguay - will cost La Albiceleste top spot in Group B. Sergio Aguero will be hoping to add to his goal tally as he partners Angel di Maria and Lionel Messi in a 3-prong attack while club teammate Martin Demichelis is likely to continue on the bench with Ezequiel Garay and Nicolas Otamendi playing in the heart of defence.

Pablo Zabaleta is likely to earn a start against Burnley tomorrow, making him a very good choice for fantasy managers.

Zabaleta was rested in Manchester City's Boxing Day match and he will likely be utilized in their home encounter against Burnley. With how bad Burnley have been on the road, Manchester City's clean sheet chances are the best of any match tomorrow, making Zabaleta an excellent fantasy choice. Aleksandar Kolarov is another good option to get into the City defense.

Argentina XI: Romero; Zabaleta, Demichelis, Garay, Basanta; Biglia, Mascherano, Di Maria; Lavezzi, Messi, Higuain

Marcos Rojo, who has been impressing in this World Cup, misses out today because of suspension but should slot straight back into the XI should Argentina advance today. Manchester City defender Pablo Zabaleta hasn't missed a minute of the tournament yet while club teammate Martin Demichelis makes his first appearance and start.

Another goalless contest in regulation needed extra time and Argentina would grab the winner as Lionel Messi found Angel Di Maria who scored in the 118th minute to allow Argentina to narrowly defeat Switzerland 1-0.

Once again, it took a single moment of opportunity for Lionel Messi to get Argentina the result they were looking for. After being contained for most of the match (he didn't even take a shot until well into the 2nd half) he finally found some space after the Swiss turned the ball over, and as the opposing defenders closed in on him, he found an open di Maria on the right, and the Real Madrid star slotted it home with a low driven strike. While the result is a positive one, the performance was not convincing if Argentina have designs on winning it all. Messi needs help, and winning like this cannot be counted on.

Argentina XI: Romero, Garay, Zabaleta, Gago, Di Maria, Higuain, Messi (c), Mascherano, Rojo, Fernandez, Lavezzi

Sergio Aguero is absent as expected as he struggles with a thigh injury. His availability going forward is still in question should Argentina advance. Ezequiel Lavezzi appears to be taking over the same role as the trident forward attack remains intact. Man City's Pablo Zabaleta is the only Premier League player starting in this game.

Argentina avoided a disaster result with a goal from Lionel Messi in 2nd half stoppage time to steal three points off of a tough Iran side in the 1-0 win.

Three points for Argentina was always expected, but they made it as difficult as possible on themselves. They dominated possession throughout the match but posed little threat as Iran just wouldn't allow anyone in space, marking brilliantly for 90 minutes. But the luxury of having the best player in the world allows for one moment of magic to save the day, and Messi sent a curling effort from the top of the box into the corner of net. Zabaleta helped the defense keep a clean sheet, while continuing to get forward on attacks as he often does. The win guarantees a spot in the KO stage and they should easily top their group.

Argentina XI: Romero; Zabaleta, Garay, Fernández, Rojo; Gago, Mascherano, Di Maria; Messi, Higuaín, Agüero

The big news in Argentina's XI is the inclusion of Gonzalo Higuain, who after playing the 2nd half in their first match has been deemed fit enough to start and will help form a lethal attacking trident with Sergio Aguero and Lionel Messi

Argentina edged out Bosnia and Hertzegovina 2 - 1 in what was a slow paced and poor match.

Argentina opened up the scoring through a Bosnia own goal in the 5th minute. Lionel Messi doubled their lead in the second half through an incredible individual effort. Outside of Messi's goal, Argentina lacked quality going forward. They only had one true central midfielder in the game and that wasn't enough to control the game against an organized Bosnian team. Argentina will have to improve if they are to be one of the favorites to win this tournament.

Pablo Zabaleta, who suffered a hamstring injury against Leicester City in the Carling Cup, trained today ahead of Manchester City's top-of-the-table clash with Liverpool on Boxing Day.

Zabaleta was expected to miss at least a month, but with no other fit right backs in the squad (Gael Clichy was an unconvincing deputy against Fulham), Manchester City will be thrilled to have the Argentine back ahead of the Liverpool clash.

Manchester City right back, Pablo Zabaleta, suffered what appeared to be a hamstring injury against Leicester City and had to be substituted very early in the match.

With Micah Richards himself sidelined with a hamstring injury, it was Dedryck Boyata who came in for the Argentine. Boyata will likely deputize in City's upcoming League matches. While City haven't been as solid defensively as they once were, the young Belgian could be an interesting fantasy option.
