Christian Atsu, who has been sidelined for the past month, will miss Newcastle’s final three matches after undergoing knee surgery.
The speedy winger has been managing a niggling knee problem for a while now, and with manager Rafa Benitez not prepared to take any further risks, now that the club are safe, a decision was taken for Atsu to go under the knife. "He had an operation on his knee to be sure that he will be fine for the next year," revealed the United manager. "It wasn’t a big issue, but he had some discomfort, and we needed to fix the problem now to be sure that next year he’s fine." Newcastle travel to Watford on Saturday and Benitez has already suggested that he "will make some changes" at Vicarage Road. However, this will not include the likes of Islam Slimani after he was handed a three-game for violent conduct, or Ciaran Clark, who picked up an injury in training. May 5 - 6:15 AM

Christian Atsu's sparkling performance helped Newcastle out of the bottom three with a 3-2 win against West Ham.

Newcastle went behind early as Marko Arnautovic intercepted an errant midfield pass and scored past Rob Elliot in just the sixth minute. But the Magpies answered right back just four minutes later with a Henri Saivet free kick following a foul on Atsu. After a back-and-forth first half, Mohamed Diame gave Newcastle the lead with his first goal of the season as Atsu danced past two defenders and found Diame streaking through the middle of the area. Minutes later, Elliot preserved the lead with a massive penalty save on Andre Ayew, and in the 61st minute, it was Atsu once again who proved the difference maker: Scoring the insurance goal Newcastle needed to earn three points and move up the table.

The Ghana Football Federation have confirmed Newcastle winger Christian Atsu will not feature in the World Cup qualifying clash against Egypt after picking up an injury in training.

Atsu has been managing a niggling knee problem since the beginning of the season and his involvement in this set of international fixtures was in doubt after "feeling something" during Newcastle’s clash with Bournemouth which forced him off. However, after being assessed, Atsu was cleared to train with the national team, but suffered a setback and Ghana announced his withdrawal via their official Twitter account: ‘Tests have revealed that winger Christian Atsu will not play for #Ghana in Sunday's World Cup qualifier against Egypt. Team doctor says the scans show @ChristianAtsu20 suffered a thigh muscle tear’. Atsu has enjoyed a solid start to the campaign and the news will come as a major blow to Rafa Benitez who is under mounting pressure having seen his Newcastle side take just 5-points from the last six games.

Newcastle's training staff will have their eyes on Christian Atsu and his thigh problem during the international break.

The winger was taken off against Bournemouth at the weekend, but still reported for international duty with Ghana despite being eliminated from World Cup contention. And during training this week, the former Chelsea product suffered a reoccurrence of his thigh problem that will have the club worried ahead of its match with Manchester United."Ghana midfielder Christian Atsu withdrew from today's in Cape Coast with a thigh complaint," the Ghanaian FA said in a statement. "Black Stars doctors will continue to assess him ahead of Sunday's World Cup qualifier against Egypt."

Rafa Benitez expects Matt Ritchie and Christian Atsu to be available for the trip to Southampton next weekend despite the pair withdrawing from international duty.

Ghana confirmed on Wednesday that Atsu would not feature in the World Cup qualifying game against Uganda due to an ongoing injury. The specifics of problem were not confirmed, but speaking this week, Benitez revealed the winger "has a little bit of discomfort in his knee" which the club are carefully managing. It is understood that Atsu received injections earlier in the campaign to delay the possibility of surgery which could rule him out for up-to 3 months. Although he was unable to start at Swansea recently, he has been named in the XI for every other Premier League match. Ritchie on the other hand was omitted from the Scotland squad because of a minor thigh issue. "He’s been playing too many games," Benitez said. "He had a little bit of discomfort and [after] talking with the doctor it was better that we didn’t take a risk."

Newcastle has started preparing for their return to the Premier League by making their loan move for Christian Atsu permanent with a 4 year contract after paying a reported £6.2 million transfer fee.

The move seems like a solid one economically for the Magpies as Atsu was productive during his season on Tyneside. Starting just under half of the Magpies' matches in the Championship (15) and coming on in 17 further, he scored five goals and contributed three assists. Certainly not a star contribution but a solid one given his part time role. At 25-years-old though, the question is how much upside Atsu has to improve on his performances taking a step up in competition.

Eddie Howe confirmed that Chelsea loanee Christian Atsu has returned to his parent club for treatment after revealing the attacker had suffered a tibial [shin] stress fracture.

The initial problem was picked up during the first international break back in September - an injury which kept Atsu out for three weeks - but on his return he received another kick in the same area. The 23-year-old then went back to Chelsea for further tests and hasn’t been at Dean Court since after a stress fracture was diagnosed. Given the nature of the problem, the club has given no timeline on his expected return although Howe indicates that there will be no long-term issues. Atsu will stay in London for up-to a month before returning to Bournemouth for the final phase of his rehab. The Ghana international is hoping to play again by late December.

Christian Atsu, who has yet to make an appearance for AFC Bournemouth in league play this season, will not be participating for the Ghana national team during the break.

At some point, one has to wonder if the Chelsea loanee actually exists or is just a figment of a soccer fan's imagination. After seeing very little action when loaned out to Everton last season, he is seeing even less playing time with the Cherries, even after a season-ending injury to Max Gradel seemingly opened the door for the Ghanaian to get his chance. Now, with a least an opportunity to do something for his country, his current knock will keep him off the pitch yet again. Perhaps we will see him make an impact at some point this season, and if he does, it will be at a bargain basement fantasy price.

Christian Atsu is expected to feature versus Cardiff tomorrow after being withdrawn with a back-problem last time out.

Atsu was withdrawn with a back problem but it is now confirmed that it was done just as a precaution and the midfielder is ready to go. He will feature in tomorrow's match and is expected to be ready for week one. Atsu can be a interesting fantasy option as we begin the season after having a slow season with Everton. He is a low-risk, high-upside pick in the later rounds of fantasy drafts.

Christian Atsu picked up a back injruy in Bournemouth's 3-0 win over Yeovil last night.

Atsu was withdrawn after 30 minutes with a back problem. The Chelsea loanee will be assessed over the next few days as the club tries to find out the severity of the injury. It's hard to guess how long Atsu will miss with the injury, so check back next week for more info. We'll consider him questionable for week one.

AFC Bournemouth have executed their third signing of the summer thus far as they strengthen their newly promoted side with a loan deal for Chelsea's Christian Atsu.

The Ghana international spent the past season loaned away to Everton and did not get a chance to make much of an impression, failing to start a single league match, collecting no goals and only one assist in league play. It is safe to say his role will be increased dramatically with the Cherries thereby thrusting him onto the fantasy radar heading into next season. He will certainly be worth monitoring in pre-season to see how Eddie Howe plans to utilize him.

Roberto Martinez has ruled Christian Atsu out of contention for Everton's trip to the Emirates on Sunday due to an illness, but expects to have him back for the midweek round.

Martinez has praised Atsu's performance of late, and it has earned the wide man more pitch time. Naturally, the manager will feel pressed to find production from wherever he can as he tries to guide the Toffees toward a run of wins. Because of that, predicting his XI these days has been as difficult as ever and until they start playing better, the players who do start are hard to trust to perform well. With that in mind along with the fixture, there should be limited investment here.

Christian Atsu joins the list of players in doubt for Roberto Martinez as Everton prepare to host Queens Park Rangers on Monday night.

Atsu came up limping in the Toffee's Europa clash with FC Krasnodar yesterday evening and is in danger of missing out Monday, though even if fit the odds would be he would only make an appearance as a substitute and not offer much fantasy appeal despite the attractive matchup.

Everton manager Roberto Martinez has tipped winger Christian Atsu to impress in the later parts of the season.

Everton acquired Atsu from Chelsea on a season long loan and rumor had it that Martinez had persuaded Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho that Atsu will get plenty of playing time. That hasn't been the case so far but Everton have struggled and they may need the spark sooner rather than later. Martinez claims he is giving the winger time to adapt to the Premier League level of physicality and only time will tell whether the Chelsea man will be a viable option for the Toffees.

Roberto Martinez will not have Christian Atsu available to him when the Toffees host Chelsea on Saturday, due to his loan arrangement with the Blues.

That does not mean that recent departee from Stamford Bridge, Samuel Eto'o won't lace up his boots however. Between he and Romelu Lukaku, there will be plenty of intrigue at Goodison Park as two former Chelsea property will be looking to find the net while a Diego Costa injury scare, one whose severity is yet unknown, leaves the Blues with issues up top.
