Luuk De Jong set up Newcastle's opening goal against Swansea, but couldn't finish the first half after injuring his ankle.
De Jong and Papiss Cisse both left the match with first half injuries, though Cisse's is significantly more serious. Loic Remy replaced De Jong and he'll have to be the main man if Newcastle are to arrest this alarming, late season slide. Mon, Apr 21, 2014 09:54:00 AM

Newcastle United were beaten handily by their crosstown rivals Sunderland 0-3, in a performance that was noticeably poor without the services of the recently departed Yohan Cabaye.

The biggest transfer in the January window may not be who was brought in to the league, but who was sold. Cabaye has been the foundation of Newcastle's play, and without him and suspended frontman Loic Remy, the Toons were able to pepper Vito Mannone with shots, but none that really challenged him. A second half debut was handed to Luuk De Jong in an attempt to ignite something for Alan Pardew's side, but Sunderland's defense kept things tidy throughout. The two clubs appear to be heading in opposite directions now and things won't get any easier as Newcastle head to Stamford Bridge next.

Newcastle United have signed striker Luuk de Jong on loan from Borussia Monchengladbach unitl the end of the season. The club also has an option to make the move permanent.

De Jong was expected to partner Loic Remy, but will have to replace him for a time after the Frenchman was sent off for a headbutt at Norwich. De Jong had one good and one great season at FC Twente, and the Magpies have been trying to sign him for years. He was not a factor at Gladbach, and will hope to get his career back on track, starting in the Tyne-Wear derby at the weekend.
