Arsenal are hoping to bring in some defensive cover after Arsene Wenger confirmed Per Mertesacker will be side-lined for "a few months" due to injury.
The German defender was injured during last Fridays’ pre-season friendly with Lens and although initial reports suggested the knock was only minor, further tests have revealed the extent of the damage and Mertesacker immediately went under the knife. Wenger was reluctant to give a definitive timeline at this stage although he did admit that he was hoping to sign cover during the interim. "We have to look for an option to get a bit more experience," said the Gunners boss. "With Per being out, we are a bit short on the experience front and we are looking to bring somebody in." One player who has been linked, is Valencia’s centre-back Shkodran Mustafi, and with the Spanish club looking to balance their books, the German international could be an ideal replacement. Arsene Wenger is expected to provide an update on Per Mertesacker this evening amid concerns that the German defender has been ruled out for the remainder of 2016.

Mertesacker was part of the side which drew 1-1 with Lens last Friday in Arsenal’s first preseason game of the summer, but despite playing 90 minutes, the club announced yesterday that the 31-year-old would not be a part of the travelling squad to America after sustaining a knee injury. No specifics were given although rumours began to surface suggesting Mertesacker may miss up-to five months due to ligament damage. If confirmed, the Arsenal boss could be forced into the transfer market to provide defensive cover. Laurent Koscielny is expected to miss the opener against Liverpool due to his involvement at the Euros which would leave Calum Chambers to partner Gabriel Paulista [currently suffering from tonsillitis] in the heart of the Gunners defence.

Per Mertesacker will miss Arsenal's final two matches with a hamstring injury.

The German center back only recently came back into the side after Gabriel was given a run of, largely unsuccessful, starts in the Premier League. Mertesacker was back for Arsenal's clean sheet win over Norwich City last weekend but will miss this weekend's big showdown with Manchester City that could lock up a guaranteed spot in the Champions League group stages. Presumably Gabriel will return to the starting line-up in Mertesacker's absence.

Per Mertesacker may have kicked his last ball for Arsenal after the defender limped off during Saturdays’ game against Norwich.

Mertesacker slipped under pressure from a Norwich player during the opening exchanges of the second half and immediately grabbed his hamstring before signalling to the bench. The big German was making only his third Premier League start since early March having fallen out of favour, but this latest setback could bring an early end to his campaign. Gabriel looks set to partner Laurent Koscielny in the heart of the Arsenal defence for their two remaining league games. Mertesacker has been linked with a move away from the Emirates and could end his five-year association with the club this summer.

Arsenal played to their third draw in the last four games, putting them fourth in the table to end the week, as they played to a 0-0 final against a gritty Sunderland side.

Manchester City have made up four points on the Gunners in the last four games and sit above Arsene Wenger's side on goal difference in third place. Arsenal put together a solid defensive effort, with Petr Cech stopping a couple of good looks by the Black Cats between the 50th and 52nd minute. There was some controversy in the first half though when a shot from Jermaine Defoe was deflected by the forearm of Per Mertesacker but the referee did not adjudge the incident as handball. In attack, Alexis Sanchez did not display the sort of world class form he had been in for many weeks, offering limited threat in open play, though he did take a solid effort of a free kick which was saved by Vito Mannone. The Gunners take on another relegation-battling side with a match against Norwich next week. Their attack is less likely to be stymied by the Canaries.

Per Mertesacker has overcome the head injury that saw him exit Arsenal's FA Cup victory early.

The headlines coming out of the FA Cup win were both dire and familiar for Arsenal supporters. A cup win but at the cost of three players. Things have now calmed down with two of the three, Mertesacker and Gabriel, both declared fit for the weekend's quarter final FA Cup match. Neither is expected to miss any Premier League action.

Per Mertesacker left Arsenal's 4-0 win over Hull City on Tuesday with a cut over his eye. He may miss the Sunday FA Cup match but shouldn't miss any time in the league.

Arsenal suffered three injuries on Tuesday with Mertesacker's being the least concerning of the three. The big German will likely recover in time for the weekend FA Cup match as Arsenal attempt to win the competition for the third year running. The questionable status of Laurent Koscielny and Gabriel (also injured on Tuesday) Mertesacker and Callum Chambers may be Arsenal's central pairing this weekend.

Arsenal were comprehensively beaten by Southampton at St. Mary's to remain second in the table.

Apparently Arsene Wenger's squad though that the holiday was still on as they failed to show up on the south coast. They failed to mount much of an attack and they conceded left and right. The loss gives back the ground they gained by beating Manchester City on Monday.

Per Mertesacker was a late scratch for Arsenal's 2-1 win over Everton on Saturday due to an illness, Arsene Wenger indicated that the German is now available again.

This is the second time this season that Mertesacker has missed one or more matches due to illness. With Gabriel and Laurent Koscielny forming a strong partnership when they have been paired this season the illness continues to delay any insight as to exactly which two defenders are preferred when all three are healthy. Barring an injury between today and the weekend match with Swansea we should get some clue to Wenger's preferred pairing in Wales.

The World Cup winner will be available for the League Cup version of the North London derby on Wednesday after recovering from his illness and after-effects of his auto accident.

While Gabriel's red card and accompanying three match suspension has been rescinded the Brazilian defender's status is still up in the air pending the outcome of his charge for improper conduct. The return of Per Mertesacker means that Arsenal will not be forced to start Calum Chambers or Mathieu Debuchy against Spurs in League Cup action on Wednesday or in the Premier League over the weekend. Whether Mertesacker retains his place in the line-up when both he and Gabriel are available remains to be seen.

Per Mertesacker will miss Arsenal's trip to Zagreb with conflicting reports related to an ongoing illness as well as a car crash today.

Yesterday there was a report in the Independent that Per Mertesacker was likely to miss Arsenal's trip to Zagreb for their Champions League opener with a continuation of the "mystery illness" that has seen him miss the club's last three Premier League matches. Today comes news that the big German was involved in a car crash near Arsenal's training ground and wouldn't be making the trip. What seems clear is that Mertesacker won't be traveling with the club, what isn't clear is what his status is beyond Wednesday or whether he has recovered from his illness. He was not mentioned in Arsene Wenger's team update ahead of the 2-0 victory over Stoke City.

After missing two weeks with a virus, Per Mertesacker should be fully available for Week 5 against Stoke City.

Gabriel looked good for most of the two matches while Mertesacker was out ill but it is likely that the big German will resume his role starting at the center of Arsenal's defense now that he is healthy again. Fantasy managers should note that this could be a temporary situation as Gabriel wasn't cheap and Arsenal could use the boost of athleticism and pace that the Brazil international brings to the back line.

Arsene Wenger could be forced into using Gabriel and Calum Chambers for the trip to Newcastle as doubts remain over the availability of Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny.

The pair missed the visit of Liverpool on Monday due to illness and injury and "Mertesacker is still sick" while Koscielny will have a test on Thursday "I will certainly know more [on Friday]," revealed Wenger. "The less likely to be fit is Mertesacker." Danny Welbeck is progressing well and "should be available [after the international break] if all goes well." Jack Wilshere won’t be too far behind. "Maybe one week after, he will certainly come back into full training." Tomas Rosicky remains sidelined as he recovers from knee surgery.

Per Mertesacker is doubtful for Arsenal's Week 34 showdown with Chelsea at the Emirates after picking up an ankle injury against Reading in the FA Cup Semi-final.

Would Mertesacker missing the Chelsea match be good news or bad news for Arsenal? At his best, Mertesacker provides a steady aerial presence at both ends of the pitch for Arsenal while committing few mistakes. At his worst, as he was in the loss to Monaco at the Emirates, Mertesacker's gangly frame and sometimes awkward gate allow smaller, faster, more agile players to give him fits. With Chelsea's attack featuring a number of diminutive attackers - Hazard, Oscar, Willian, etc - it may be a good thing that Arsenal are likely to start Koscielny and Gabriel at center back rather than Mertesacker.

An injury picked up by Per Mertesacker during the FA Cup win over Reading could hand Gabriel Paulista an extended run in the first team.

The full extent of the problem is not yet known but Wenger did confirm post-match "Mertesacker limps badly so it doesn't look too good," while the player said he "hobbled off after twisting his ankle." The semi-final side featured the returning Mathieu Debuchy – out since January – as Hector Bellerin was rested due to an ankle complaint while Jack Wilshere also made the bench. With Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain [groin] the only other player currently injured the Arsenal treatment room is beginning to clear at exactly the right time. Mikel Arteta and Abou Diaby will also be considered for a return to first team action very soon having stepped up their fitness by featuring for the under-21s in recent weeks.
