La Gazetta dello Sport is reporting that Arsenal have beaten Juventus and Roma to the signing of Greek international center back Kostas Manolas.
With Per Mertesacker still recovering from his World Cup exertions over the summer and Laurent Koscielny playing despite a Achilles complaint, Arsenal's lack of depth at center back has been exposed early in the season. Calum Chambers has played well as Mertesacker's deputy but one more center back was pretty clearly needed to round out a solid squad at the Emirates after Thomas Vermaelen's departure. Reports from Italy indicate that Kostas Manolas will be that man. Well regarded after a strong World Cup for Greece, the 23-year-old has been linked to a variety of big European clubs all summer. If La Gazetta dello Sport is to be believed, the deal is done. Aug 20 - 9:09 AM

A few noteworthy changes as Germany gets set to take on France: Philipp Lahm looks to be moving back to his more customary fullback position while Per Mertesacker is dropped in a somewhat surprising move. Veteran striker Miroslav Klose is handed a start.

Germany XI: Neuer; Mustafi, Mertesacker, Boateng, Howedes; Lahm, Schweinsteiger; Kroos; Ozil, Gotze, Muller.

Again Germany trot out a False 9 formation with Thomas Muller being the focus of attention up top. Expect to see Miraslav Klose to make another appearance off the bench at some point, especially if Algeria manage to keep things tight.

Germany dominated in every phase of the game in a match that was decided by halftime as they roll over Portugal 4-0.

The tourney's first hat trick goes to Thomas Muller of Bayern Munich, who had license to seemingly score at will and looks to be the name in bold in tomorrow's papers, but credit also must go to Per Mertesacker and the rest of the German defense for neutralizing Cristiano Ronaldo and keeping things tidy in what like will not be their last clean sheet of the tournament. Incidentally, the fourth goal of the contest was from defender Mats Hummels, who would later be forced off with what appears to be a potentially serious knee injury.

Arsenal players make up a full half of the non-Bundesliga contingent on Germany's final 23-man World Cup roster with Real Madrid, Chelsea and Lazio the other clubs outside of Germany represented.

Arsenal is the only club outside of Germany with more than one player representing Germany in Brazil this summer. With a side consisting heavily of Bayern Munich (7) and Borussia Dortmund (5) players, Arsenal are represented by Per Mertesacker, Mesut Ozil and Lukas Podolski while Chelsea man Andre Schurrle is the only other Premier League player to make the squad. Miroslav Klose (Lazio) and Sami Khedira (Real Madrid) are the only other non-Bundesliga players in the squad.

Per Mertesacker and Tomas Rosicky both committed their immediate futures to Arsenal as they signed for 3 years and one year respectively.

After a rocky start to his Arsenal career, Per Mertesacker has been at the heart of a very good defense over the last 18 months. Locking up his signature through what should be the prime of his career is an important move by the North London club to secure their core as they brace for a critical last two months of the season. Rosicky has been injured frequently since his arrival in 2006 but has found an important role as a spot starter and regular substitute that probably fits his injury-prone nature.

Arsenal take one point away from their scoreless draw against Chelsea (at Emirates Stadium) and now sit at the top of the table in a tie for 1st place alongside Liverpool with 36 points.

Arsenal controlled possession in a wet and windy affair while Chelsea were keen to sit back and attack on the counter. Each team had chances to convert in this one, but conditions clearly affected the players' ability to finish. Both teams will be happy with the clean sheet, but if you were hoping for goals in this one there's a bit of disappointment. Arsenal and Chelsea now have two days off until they play again on December 26. Chelsea battle Swansea at home and Arsenal will face-off against West Ham on the road.

Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker scored a headed goal that provided the difference between Germany and England in an international friendly.

The German defender was absent for the big match between Arsenal and Manchester United in the Premier League. In the international friendly between England and Germany, Mertesacker showed Arsenal supporters what they were missing by scoring a goal by beating United defender Chris Smalling to the ball. The goal came on the heels of another excellent shot on goal from Mertesacker that was well saved by Joe Hart.

Per Mertesacker is available and expected to start for Arsenal in their match with Norwich City.

Mertesacker is a strong option this week against a Norwich side who have netted just three times in the last six PL games.

The big German defender has come down with an illness and did not make the trip to Sunderland with the Arsenal squad.

Both Mesut Ozil and Mertesacker are ill but while the defender did not make the trip the playmaker did at least travel. As far as Arsenal's likely defensive alignment, Thomas Vermaelen is back in training but unlikely to be ready to start. This means that Bakary Sagna is likely to slide into a central role with Carl Jenkinson coming in at right back.
