With Laurent Koscielny suspended and Gabriel still recovering from a knee injury, Per Mertesacker is likely to start for the Gunners against Leicester City on Friday.
The former German international and future Arsenal academy director left the Community Shield match early with a significant gash above his eye. After getting a number of stitches he returned to training on Wednesday and should be eligible to play on Friday. Given the crunch at center back it seems likely that Mertesacker will get a start. Arsène Wenger played down the eye injury sustained by Per Mertesacker in the Community Shield final, although the centre-back remains cautious over his availability in game week one.

The big German was caught by Gary Cahill’s elbow at Wembley which left him needing stitches to close a deep cut above his right eye. Post-match, Wenger was quick to allay fears that the defender could miss the opener on Friday "it was just bleeding and open, but it’s not bad," but Mertesacker couldn’t guarantee his recovery until he had been fully assessed: "I’m not quite sure yet [whether I will be fit]. We need to take care of this - you know how the swelling goes and if it turns into a black eye or something. It’s too early to say because health is the first thing." Ozil and Ramsey will also be assessed ahead of the game at the Emirates: "Mesut got a kick on his ankle. We’ll see but he has a little chance of playing. [while] Aaron could be short as well with a small calf problem."

Arsenal have announced that this will be Per Mertesacker's final season as a player after which he will take over as Academy Manager at the North London club.

After missing most of last season, Per Mertesacker returned with spectacular effect for the FA Cup final victory over Chelsea. Despite the quality of the performance, the fact that his presence as a starter required so many others to be out of action underscored that his time as a meaningful contributor to the first team is winding down. The club made that official as they announced that this season will be the BFG's final season as a player. He will stay with the club beyond his playing retirement as the Academy Manager.

Arsenal have activated a clause in Per Mertesacker's contract that will tie him to the club for an additional season.

The extension of Mertesacker's contract will see the World Cup winner remain at the club, presumably as a reserve center back and mentor to rising players like Calum Chambers and Rob Holding, through the summer of 2018. Beyond that point, the Gunners will likely have decided if Chambers and/or Holding are good enough to play at the club. If they are, then the club should be set at center back for the foreseeable future. If not, they will have Mertesacker's salary coming off the books to help pay for a replacement.

Arsene Wenger has indicated an interest in retaining veteran depth indicating that he wants both Santi Cazorla and Per Mertesacker back for another year at the club.

The big German is unlikely to get a lot of time upon his return but with Gabriel struggling and Rob Holding and Calum Chambers as yet unproven the presence of an experienced center back behind Koscielny and Mustafi seems like a sensible plan. The Gunners seem to find themselves short handed at key positions late in Premier League seasons recently so even if he isn't going to start much the presence of a World Cup winner on the bench could help the likes of Holding and Chambers as they develop.

In his continued effort to return from a pre-season knee injury, Per Mertesacker has started full training but is still probably at least two weeks away.

The schedule for Mertesacker's return looks a lot like the schedule for Shkodran Mustafi's return so it may well be that Mertesacker returns to the Arsenal squad as a reserve. Depending on how Gabriel plays over the next few weeks, he may even find himself relegated to being the fourth choice center back. Not necessarily the worst fate for a player who doesn't seem built to age well as he prepares to play his first match as a 32-year-old.

Arsenal center-back Per Mertesacker said he is hoping to return to match action early in the New Year following knee surgery.

Mertesacker suffered a knee injury in July in a preseason friendly that required surgery, which has kept him out for nearly six months now. But the veteran defender is nearing a return which the New Year on the horizon. Said Mertesacker: "I'm able to run now, painless, and it's what it's all about. When you are able to run again after such a long time it makes you feel happy. I'm hopeful that I can join the team properly and be available to the team next year. That's my resolution. I want to be back on the pitch and with the ball."

Arsenal are hoping to bring in some defensive cover after Arsene Wenger confirmed Per Mertesacker will be side-lined for "a few months" due to injury.

The German defender was injured during last Fridays’ pre-season friendly with Lens and although initial reports suggested the knock was only minor, further tests have revealed the extent of the damage and Mertesacker immediately went under the knife. Wenger was reluctant to give a definitive timeline at this stage although he did admit that he was hoping to sign cover during the interim. "We have to look for an option to get a bit more experience," said the Gunners boss. "With Per being out, we are a bit short on the experience front and we are looking to bring somebody in." One player who has been linked, is Valencia’s centre-back Shkodran Mustafi, and with the Spanish club looking to balance their books, the German international could be an ideal replacement.

Arsene Wenger is expected to provide an update on Per Mertesacker this evening amid concerns that the German defender has been ruled out for the remainder of 2016.

Mertesacker was part of the side which drew 1-1 with Lens last Friday in Arsenal’s first preseason game of the summer, but despite playing 90 minutes, the club announced yesterday that the 31-year-old would not be a part of the travelling squad to America after sustaining a knee injury. No specifics were given although rumours began to surface suggesting Mertesacker may miss up-to five months due to ligament damage. If confirmed, the Arsenal boss could be forced into the transfer market to provide defensive cover. Laurent Koscielny is expected to miss the opener against Liverpool due to his involvement at the Euros which would leave Calum Chambers to partner Gabriel Paulista [currently suffering from tonsillitis] in the heart of the Gunners defence.

Per Mertesacker will miss Arsenal's final two matches with a hamstring injury.

The German center back only recently came back into the side after Gabriel was given a run of, largely unsuccessful, starts in the Premier League. Mertesacker was back for Arsenal's clean sheet win over Norwich City last weekend but will miss this weekend's big showdown with Manchester City that could lock up a guaranteed spot in the Champions League group stages. Presumably Gabriel will return to the starting line-up in Mertesacker's absence.

Per Mertesacker may have kicked his last ball for Arsenal after the defender limped off during Saturdays’ game against Norwich.

Mertesacker slipped under pressure from a Norwich player during the opening exchanges of the second half and immediately grabbed his hamstring before signalling to the bench. The big German was making only his third Premier League start since early March having fallen out of favour, but this latest setback could bring an early end to his campaign. Gabriel looks set to partner Laurent Koscielny in the heart of the Arsenal defence for their two remaining league games. Mertesacker has been linked with a move away from the Emirates and could end his five-year association with the club this summer.

Arsenal played to their third draw in the last four games, putting them fourth in the table to end the week, as they played to a 0-0 final against a gritty Sunderland side.

Manchester City have made up four points on the Gunners in the last four games and sit above Arsene Wenger's side on goal difference in third place. Arsenal put together a solid defensive effort, with Petr Cech stopping a couple of good looks by the Black Cats between the 50th and 52nd minute. There was some controversy in the first half though when a shot from Jermaine Defoe was deflected by the forearm of Per Mertesacker but the referee did not adjudge the incident as handball. In attack, Alexis Sanchez did not display the sort of world class form he had been in for many weeks, offering limited threat in open play, though he did take a solid effort of a free kick which was saved by Vito Mannone. The Gunners take on another relegation-battling side with a match against Norwich next week. Their attack is less likely to be stymied by the Canaries.

Per Mertesacker has overcome the head injury that saw him exit Arsenal's FA Cup victory early.

The headlines coming out of the FA Cup win were both dire and familiar for Arsenal supporters. A cup win but at the cost of three players. Things have now calmed down with two of the three, Mertesacker and Gabriel, both declared fit for the weekend's quarter final FA Cup match. Neither is expected to miss any Premier League action.

Per Mertesacker left Arsenal's 4-0 win over Hull City on Tuesday with a cut over his eye. He may miss the Sunday FA Cup match but shouldn't miss any time in the league.

Arsenal suffered three injuries on Tuesday with Mertesacker's being the least concerning of the three. The big German will likely recover in time for the weekend FA Cup match as Arsenal attempt to win the competition for the third year running. The questionable status of Laurent Koscielny and Gabriel (also injured on Tuesday) Mertesacker and Callum Chambers may be Arsenal's central pairing this weekend.

Arsenal were comprehensively beaten by Southampton at St. Mary's to remain second in the table.

Apparently Arsene Wenger's squad though that the holiday was still on as they failed to show up on the south coast. They failed to mount much of an attack and they conceded left and right. The loss gives back the ground they gained by beating Manchester City on Monday.
