The World Cup winner will be available for the League Cup version of the North London derby on Wednesday after recovering from his illness and after-effects of his auto accident.
While Gabriel's red card and accompanying three match suspension has been rescinded the Brazilian defender's status is still up in the air pending the outcome of his charge for improper conduct. The return of Per Mertesacker means that Arsenal will not be forced to start Calum Chambers or Mathieu Debuchy against Spurs in League Cup action on Wednesday or in the Premier League over the weekend. Whether Mertesacker retains his place in the line-up when both he and Gabriel are available remains to be seen. Sep 22 - 2:41 PM

Per Mertesacker will miss Arsenal's trip to Zagreb with conflicting reports related to an ongoing illness as well as a car crash today.

Yesterday there was a report in the Independent that Per Mertesacker was likely to miss Arsenal's trip to Zagreb for their Champions League opener with a continuation of the "mystery illness" that has seen him miss the club's last three Premier League matches. Today comes news that the big German was involved in a car crash near Arsenal's training ground and wouldn't be making the trip. What seems clear is that Mertesacker won't be traveling with the club, what isn't clear is what his status is beyond Wednesday or whether he has recovered from his illness. He was not mentioned in Arsene Wenger's team update ahead of the 2-0 victory over Stoke City.

After missing two weeks with a virus, Per Mertesacker should be fully available for Week 5 against Stoke City.

Gabriel looked good for most of the two matches while Mertesacker was out ill but it is likely that the big German will resume his role starting at the center of Arsenal's defense now that he is healthy again. Fantasy managers should note that this could be a temporary situation as Gabriel wasn't cheap and Arsenal could use the boost of athleticism and pace that the Brazil international brings to the back line.

Arsene Wenger could be forced into using Gabriel and Calum Chambers for the trip to Newcastle as doubts remain over the availability of Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny.

The pair missed the visit of Liverpool on Monday due to illness and injury and "Mertesacker is still sick" while Koscielny will have a test on Thursday "I will certainly know more [on Friday]," revealed Wenger. "The less likely to be fit is Mertesacker." Danny Welbeck is progressing well and "should be available [after the international break] if all goes well." Jack Wilshere won’t be too far behind. "Maybe one week after, he will certainly come back into full training." Tomas Rosicky remains sidelined as he recovers from knee surgery.

Per Mertesacker is doubtful for Arsenal's Week 34 showdown with Chelsea at the Emirates after picking up an ankle injury against Reading in the FA Cup Semi-final.

Would Mertesacker missing the Chelsea match be good news or bad news for Arsenal? At his best, Mertesacker provides a steady aerial presence at both ends of the pitch for Arsenal while committing few mistakes. At his worst, as he was in the loss to Monaco at the Emirates, Mertesacker's gangly frame and sometimes awkward gate allow smaller, faster, more agile players to give him fits. With Chelsea's attack featuring a number of diminutive attackers - Hazard, Oscar, Willian, etc - it may be a good thing that Arsenal are likely to start Koscielny and Gabriel at center back rather than Mertesacker.

An injury picked up by Per Mertesacker during the FA Cup win over Reading could hand Gabriel Paulista an extended run in the first team.

The full extent of the problem is not yet known but Wenger did confirm post-match "Mertesacker limps badly so it doesn't look too good," while the player said he "hobbled off after twisting his ankle." The semi-final side featured the returning Mathieu Debuchy – out since January – as Hector Bellerin was rested due to an ankle complaint while Jack Wilshere also made the bench. With Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain [groin] the only other player currently injured the Arsenal treatment room is beginning to clear at exactly the right time. Mikel Arteta and Abou Diaby will also be considered for a return to first team action very soon having stepped up their fitness by featuring for the under-21s in recent weeks.
Apr 21 - 10:30 AM

After being rested for Week 27 against Everton, Per Mertesacker may be rested again for Week 28 in order to give him an extended rest.

Per Mertesacker looked rotten against Monaco last mid-week in Champions League action and overuse has been called out as the biggest reason given how frequently the German started for Arsenal after playing for the entire World Cup. To make the rest a meaningful one, it seems likely that Gabriel will start a second consecutive match as Arsenal travel to Loftus Road on Wednesday. The rotation has not been made official anywhere but it makes sense given what we saw from Mertesacker.

Per Mertesacker, Olivier Giroud and Mesut Ozil were particularly poor as Arsenal went down 3-1 to Monaco at the Emirates.

With Monaco up two goals and having three away goals to their credit, Arsenal will need a miraculous performance in the return match to avoid being eliminated in the round of sixteen yet again. Per Mertesacker looked bad on Monaco's first two goals deflecting the first into the Arsenal net and pressing too high and being caught out on the second. Giroud failed to put two very good opportunities on target, let alone in the back of the net. Ozil was the bad Ozil again as he wandered lackadaisically around the attacking end and producing little. It was a disappointing effort all around from the Gunners and one they had better hope won't see them lose confidence in their Premier League efforts.

Arsene Wenger needs Per Mertesacker to be his rock with injuries continuing to rock the Arsenal defense and in Week 9 that's exactly what the German was.

He certainly wasn't spectacular but he rarely is. More importantly the German World Cup winner was extremely solid. He blocked two shots and intercepted a couple of passes on the way to a clean sheet and a double digit fantasy performance in the Yahoo format. With Burnley next on the agenda there is a better than average chance that Mertesacker will follow up with another big weekend.

Per Mertesacker didn't deliver the sort of strong fantasy performance you'd expect in a week when Arsenal kept a clean sheet.

The World Cup-winner got a clean sheet against Aston Villa in Week 5 action and got to double digits (10) in the Yahoo format but it is worth noting that he was light on the sort of phantom points that turn a clean sheet into a big fantasy day. Mertesacker intercepted three passes and won a foul but beyond that there is little statistical evidence that he was playing that makes a difference for fantasy purposes. The outcome extends a trend for a player who is probably better in real life than he is as a fantasy option in most cases.

La Gazetta dello Sport is reporting that Arsenal have beaten Juventus and Roma to the signing of Greek international center back Kostas Manolas.

With Per Mertesacker still recovering from his World Cup exertions over the summer and Laurent Koscielny playing despite a Achilles complaint, Arsenal's lack of depth at center back has been exposed early in the season. Calum Chambers has played well as Mertesacker's deputy but one more center back was pretty clearly needed to round out a solid squad at the Emirates after Thomas Vermaelen's departure. Reports from Italy indicate that Kostas Manolas will be that man. Well regarded after a strong World Cup for Greece, the 23-year-old has been linked to a variety of big European clubs all summer. If La Gazetta dello Sport is to be believed, the deal is done.

Germany XI: Neuer; Lahm, Boateng, Hummels, Höwedes, Schweinsteiger, Khedira, Müller, Kroos, Özil, Klose

A few noteworthy changes as Germany gets set to take on France: Philipp Lahm looks to be moving back to his more customary fullback position while Per Mertesacker is dropped in a somewhat surprising move. Veteran striker Miroslav Klose is handed a start.

Germany XI: Neuer; Mustafi, Mertesacker, Boateng, Howedes; Lahm, Schweinsteiger; Kroos; Ozil, Gotze, Muller.

Again Germany trot out a False 9 formation with Thomas Muller being the focus of attention up top. Expect to see Miraslav Klose to make another appearance off the bench at some point, especially if Algeria manage to keep things tight.

Former Sunderland striker Asamoah Gyan leads the line again for Ghana who will be hoping for a win, though a draw would still give them a lifeline.
