Matt Targett has moved on-loan to Championship play-off hopefuls Fulham until the end of the season.
Targettt, 22, has been a fringe player under Mauricio Pellegrino, making just two appearances for the Saints. He is currently the third choice left-back behind starter Ryan Bertrand and Sam McQueen. "I’m really happy to be here," Targett told the London club's website. "I am looking forward to helping the side push on to the play-offs." Fulham are the top team in the Championship over the last six fixtures, winning five and drawing just one. Jan 22 - 10:06 AM

Southampton manager Claude Puel announced defender Matt Targett underwent surgery for a torn hamstring.

A hamstring injury has kept the left-back out for much of the past month, and it was finally decided that the 21-year-old go under the knife to remedy the problem, with the recovery potentially lasting up to four months. Meanwhile, Puel said goalkeeper Alex McCarthy is also recovering from a hamstring injury and will need more time to recovery: "Matt Targett has had surgery and will stay out for three or four months. McCarthy is still out and I think there are no other players unavailable."

Injuries to both first and second choice left-backs could hand Sam McQueen his first Premier League start for Southampton.

It’s been a tough week for the Saints. First up they lost Ryan Bertrand to a suspected hamstring strain which is likely to keep him out for around 2-3 weeks while his [potential] replacement – Matt Targett – was injured training with the England U21 squad. Initially, the Three Lions medical team were confident that Targett would be back to face Bosnia on Tuesday after missing the first Championship Qualifier, but, having failed to recover in time, manager Aidy Boothroyd allowed Targett to return to St Marys’ for further treatment. If Bertrand [and Targett] are ruled out, then left-back duties could fall to Sam McQueen after Claude Puel decided to switch the attacking midfielder to a more defensive role. The 21-year-old has started all four of Southampton’s U23 matches filling in on both the left and right hand side.

Southampton gave Leicester plenty to think about over the course of 90 minutes, but they could not find a goal and lost to the Foxes, 1-0.

This is what happens when you up against a team of destiny. There were stretches in this one where the Saints looked the more threatening side, but Leicester's defense was superb in clearing dangerous balls that entered the box. Probably Southampton's best chance came when Sadio Mane found space as he approached the goal, but his strike was well-blocked by Danny Simpson. Fraser Forster kept the game in reach in the second half by stopping what would have been a Jose Fonte own goal and then came out of nowhere to parry away a wide open chance by Simpson. Matt Targett got a start today but apparently was substituted at the break because of injury, possibly to his ankle. Clarification should be arriving on Targett's status soon.

Southampton have ramped up their search for a defender after conceding five goals in the first two matches.

The Saints did not look good in the back this past weekend and they are searching to strengthen their back line. Matt Targett was ill and not at 100% and that was cited as one of the big issues by Ronald Koeman, but the problems go beyond Targett. The Saints had trouble closing down on the flanks and clearly missed Morgan Schneiderlin from midfield. They need to sign a new defender soon and hope to get Ryan Bertrand back healthy in a few weeks. The return of Jordy Clasie in midfield should also help in replacing Schneiderlin.

Matt Targett is probable for gameweek 26 after recovering from a concussion.

Targett missed Southampton's last match with a concussion and has a chance to start this weekend against Liverpool. If he starts, Maya Yoshida will likely slide back into center-back while Florin Gardos goes to the bench. It's a tricky situation that we recommend you avoid this weekend due to the uncertainty of who starts.

Matt Targett will miss the midweek clash with West Ham United due to a slight concussion he picked up over the weekend.

Targett clashed heads over the weekend and suffered a slight concussion in the process. He had precautionary X-rays that showed nothing serious and he will likely be back in GW26. Ryan Bertrand serves the second of his three match ban, so Maya Yoshida will likely feature at left-back again.

Matthew Targett started in place of the suspended Ryan Bertrand but clashed heads with a Sunderland player and was forced off after 25 minutes.

Targett was replaced by Florin Gardos, who is playing as a central defender, while Maya Yoshida is now at left-back. Targett would have been a fine fantasy play during the next few weeks while Bertrand is out but the injury may prevent him from playing in the next match. Targett was taken to the hospital to receive x-rays but they are only precautionary. If he is forced to miss the next match, Toby Alderweireld or Florin Gardos will start in his place.

Southampton are willing to let youngster Matt Targett earn a starting spot as a replacement of Luke Shaw.

Targett is an 18-year-old who is an England youth international and has recently made the breakthrough into Southampton's first squad. New Saints boss Ronald Koemann will give Targett the chance to run away with the job during pre-season matches and if he ends up being good enough, Targett could save Saints a lot of money as they won't need to find another replacement for Shaw. Saints had a decent defense last season and if Targett earns a starting spot, he could be a decent fantasy choice for the adventurous manager.
