The sad news broke on Monday that former Newcastle United midfielder Cheick Tiote has collapsed and died.
The 30-year-old, who had been plying his trade for Chinese second-tier side Beijing Enterprises since February, fell ill following training on Monday and later died in hospital. No further news has been released at this stage. Tiote spent seven years on Tyneside and will forever be remembered for his one [and only] goal for Newcastle – an 88th minute volley against Arsenal which capped a truly remarkable comeback. Four-nil down after just 26 minutes, Newcastle fought back in the second half, buoyed by Joey Barton’s penalty which began the fightback. As the game approached time added-on, a free-kick was headed clear, the ball fell to Tiote, who smashed it past Szczesny from the edge of the box to make it 4-4. St James' Park erupted. Former manager Steve McClaren led the tributes to the man with ‘the most beautiful smile in football’. "He was such a competitor. He wanted to win every game, kick every player and win every tackle. He was a winner. I just can't believe it." Tue, Jun 6, 2017 04:08:00 AM

Newcastle is shopping around Cheick Tiote this summer in the hopes of offloading the midfielder during the upcoming transfer window.

The Magpies are reportedly looking to bring in £4 million for the 29-year-old, who has been fielding interest from China and Turkey for the past year now. But Crystal Palace, West Bromwich Albion and Middlesbrough are all reported to be interested in a move for Tiote, who just a year ago was linked with a move to Arsenal. Also expected to depart this summer is the core of Newcastle late-season surge. Moussa Sissoko, Georginio Wijnaldum, and Andros Townsend are expected to be fielding offers while Papiss Demba Cisse is in talks with Qatar Stars League side Lekhwiya.

Cheik Tiote will be left out of the squad for Newcastle United's match against West Ham United as the midfielder is currently in China on the verge of a transfer to Shanghai Shenhua.

Shanghai Shenua are apparently £8m for the midfield enforcer, where Tiote would reunite with former Magpie teammate Demba Ba. With Jack Colback locked in for one of the defensive midfield slots and the recent signing of Jonjo Shelvey, the sale of Tiote makes sense and the money received in exchange will likely be used to finance the purchase of a striker before the end of January. Shelvey will likely start right away then against the Hammers.

Steve McClaren announced that Cheick Tiote will return to the squad this weekend during his Friday press conference ahead of Newcastle United's match with Aston Villa.

McClaren went on further to say that the squad otherwise stays the same, which is to say no other injured players have returned and no new injuries have cropped up. Not that Tiote is a fantasy option in any format when starting regularly, but with the Magpies recent positive results, it is highly unlikely the Ivorian would displace the current defensive midfield pairing of Vurnon Anita or Jack Colback anyway. Hosting last place Villa, Newcastle must capitalize on their current form and take three points on Saturday.

Cheik Tiote has emerged as an early doubt for Newcastle United's Week 14 trip to Crystal Palace with a groin complaint.

Tiote had to leave last weekend for the Magpies miserable performance against Leicester City after 20 minutes, when he tweaked his groin. Steve McClaren is hoping that the injury is "not too serious", so the early outlook at least gives Tiote a chance to be available next weekend. However, he is a fantasy plague in any format and whether he is available or not won't change the fantasy outlook for his teammates in a positive way either. In fact, with Jack Colback certainly unavailable, it might require someone like Moussa Sissoko to play a deeper-lying role.

Newcastle have been rocked by the news that midfielder Cheick Tiote could miss the remainder of the season after injuring his knee while on African Cup of Nations duty with the Ivory Coast.

Tiote managed 90 minutes during the draw with Mali in January but the Newcastle enforcer was to play no further part in the competition although the full extent of the injury was unknown. Manager John Carver admitted communication was difficult and the club were happy to assess their player on his return after the final on Sunday [Ivory Coast won a sudden death penalty shootout against Ghana]. Although Tiote will undergo further tests it is believed that the player has suffered extensive damage with a projected 10 week absence in the first instance with many suggesting the player may not appear in a black and white shirt again following a year of transfer speculation; however with Mehdi Abeid, Jack Colback, Vernon Anita and Moussa Sissoko all capable of playing a central role his loss will not hit the Magpies too hard.

Cheik Tiote is expected to return to Newcastle's lineup in week 19 after serving a one-match ban.

The midfielder picked up his fifth yellow card of the season against Sunderland and the missed the week 18 match against Manchester United. He is now rested and could start week 19 against an injured Everton defense. Despite the likely inclusion in the squad, Tiote has been far from impressive after his return from injury this season and is only averaging three points per match. Avoid him in all formats.

Newcastle enforcer Cheick Tiote has been ruled out of the clash at Old Trafford on Boxing Day against Manchester United because of suspension.

The Ivorian midfielder picked up his fifth yellow card of the season in Sundays’ defeat to Sunderland following a number of persistent fouls during the first half of a tense Tyne-Wear derby. Tiote has just returned to the United squad following a recent calf strain but has failed to live up to his previous high standards with many questioning his inclusion in recent games. Mehdi Abeid would’ve been an option but is still struggling with a broken toe – although a pain-killing injection will help – while Vernon Anita has a chance to come in from the cold as Newcastle struggle with a number of midfielders out. However great news for Jonas Gutierrez who steps up his recovery from testicular cancer by playing for the under-21 side on Monday.

Alan Pardew confirmed via Twitter that as long as Cheik Tiote has not had any setbacks during the international break, the defensive midfielder will be in the squad this weekend when Newcastle travel to Southampton.

Tiote may just be eased back with a bench role this weekend, but he is never a legitimate option in fantasy when starting, unless your league rewards yellow cards. It will help the Magpies in reality though as Tiote provides a necessary physical presence in the center of the pitch. Jack Colback, another defensive mid with a little more fantasy appeal, is also returning to fitness and should be available to Alan Pardew this coming weekend.

Cheik Tiote suffered a hamstring injury in training earlier this week, and is expected to miss several weeks. He is definitely out of Newcastle's matches against Chelsea and Tottenham.

It has been a stop-start year for Tiote with injuries and suspensions. However, the last thing that Newcastle needs at the moment is to lose another key player. They are going to limp into Stamford Bridge to face the in-form side in the league without their top attacking and defensive players.

Cheik Tiote had a stunning goal disallowed for offsides in the later stages of the first half that would have leveled the match with Manchester City, but Newcastle's efforts from then on could not find their way past Joe Hart, as the Magpies fall 0-2.

With no teammate behind the City defense touching the ball or masking the view or Hart, there was no advantage for Newcastle the moment Tiote struck a gorgeous blast from outside the 20 yard box, but the referee overruled the linesman and disallowed the goal much to Alan Pardew and Newcastle supporters' dismay. A rash of three yellow cards in the space of four minutes soon thereafter provided an intense atmosphere heading into halftime. Newcastle deserved something from this match, making City work extremely hard all afternoon. They will attempt to brush off the outcome next weekend when they travel to West Ham.

Newcastle United midfielder, Cheik Tiote, picked up his fifth yellow card of the season against Crystal Palace and will miss Stoke City's visit on Boxing Day.

Newcastle will miss Tiote's physical presence against the Potters. His absence will allow Vurnon Anita to keep his place in midfield, and perhaps pave the way for Shola Ameobi to return to the starting eleven.
