Ron Vlaar was on Aston Villa's list of released players this week and will be allowed to move on to a bigger club.
Aston Villa were hopeful they could persuade Vlaar to stay but that wasn't the case and he's been released from the club. He will now be pursued by a number of big clubs including Arsenal and Manchester United. Aston Villa are rumored to be in the lead to sign Micah Richards as his replacement but a deal is not guaranteed as of yet. Jun 13 - 1:13 PM

Ron Vlaar will not be involved in the upcoming Euro 2016 qualifying game against Latvia after failing to recover from injury.

Vlaar missed the entertaining loss against United States [4-3] last weekend but despite taking part in training "I have had a complete session and it went well. I feel fine" the defender will return to Villa for further treatment. It is not known whether Vlaar has suffered a setback or whether he has been rested as a precaution, indeed the Daily Mail actually report a knee injury although the issue is believed to be linked to an ongoing calf problem. However there was better news for the Netherlands as Memphis Depay joined the group again after shaking off a minor foot injury – the Manchester United winger is expected to start on Friday.

Aston Villa manager Tim Sherwood has told the media that there will be a number of significant changes at his club this summer.

Sherwood avoided relegation but finishing 17th is not good enough for Aston Villa and they are desperately trying to improve. Sherwood has said that a number of players will be released and that they'll be busy on the transfer market. Ron Vlaar is one of those players who could be sent out after an injury prone season and a move to a bigger club could significantly raise his fantasy value.

Ron Vlaar has returned to full training after missing a few weeks with an injury.

Vlaar, Philippe Senderos, and Tom Cleverley have all returned to full training but only Vlaar and Senderos will be available for selection this weekend as Cleverley is ineligible to face Manchester United. Vlaar is the more likely to earn a start as Senderos has missed five months and is unlikely to have the fitness required to start. Vlaar is also the better option of the two. Aston Villa have a double game-week in week 31 where they face both Manchester United and QPR, so Vlaar is a decent option to use in fantasy.
Apr 2 - 2:09 PM

Ron Vlaar remains a doubt for gameweek 30 and Aston Villa will likely start Jores Okore and Ciaran Clark once again.

Okore and Clark played well against Sunderland but also weren't asked to do too much due to Sunderland's total non-effort on Saturday. Okore and Clark are risky options against a decent Swansea team this weekend but could certainly provide high upside if they can keep a clean sheet at home. Consider them low floor, high ceiling type of plays.

Ron Vlaar is questionable for Tuesday's match against West Brom with an injury.

Vlaar served a suspension in gameweek 27 and now is in danger of missing week 28 through an injury. Tim Sherwood has labeled him "touch and go", so it's not exactly clear whether he'll be able to play on Tuesday. Avoid him in fantasy for the week, especially with Villa not being able to keep any clean sheets lately. Kieran Richardson and Phillippe Senderos continue to be out while Alan Hutton and Aly Cissokho are doubts.

Aston Villa lost 2-1 to Stoke City in Tim Sherwood's first Premier League match in charge of Villa.

Scott Sinclair opened up the scoring for Aston Villa early in the first half but goals from Mame Biram Diouf and Victor Moses were enough to give Stoke City the three points. Ron Vlaar was sent off for a second yellow late in the game and will miss Aston Villa's next match. Aston Villa are now in serious relegation trouble as they are in 19th place with 22 points. Tim Sherwood is in for quite a relegation battle.
Feb 21 - 12:14 PM

Defensive linchpin Ron Vlaar should make the matchday squad against Chelsea, but the game could come too soon for him to start.

The towering Dutchman has not featured since limping off with a knee injury 15 minutes into the 0-0 draw against Crystal Palace at Villa Park on New Year’s Day. Aston Villa boss Paul Lambert said the World Cup star had resumed full training and was nearing a return to first-team action. "He’s trained this week and if he comes through tomorrow he’ll be in the squad," Lambert said during his Chelsea pre-match press conference at Villa Park on Thursday. Scott Sinclair, who joined Villa on loan from Manchester City last week, could make his first start in claret and blue after coming on as a sub in the 5-0 thumping at Arsenal.
Feb 5 - 6:33 PM

Aston Villa defender Ron Vlaar will miss four to six week with a meniscus problem.

Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert stated on Friday that Vlaar has "just a little meniscus thing and it looks like he will be out for between 4/6 weeks". The good news is that Nathan Baker trained on Thursday and will be available alongside Kieran Richardson, who is returning from suspension.
Jan 9 - 5:34 PM

Paul Lambert is sweating on the fitness of his influential Captian and defensive stalwart Ron Vlaar after the Dutch international was forced off within 15 minutes of the game against Crystal Palace at Villa Park.

Vlaar having just returned following a month out – calf strain – has been pivotal for the ‘Clarets & Blues’ recently in a solid defensive unit which has only conceded 3 goals in his 5 appearances which included a draw against Manchester United with ten men. This latest setback is said to be similar to the knee injury he suffered during the World Cup in Brazil which kept Vlaar out for almost a month. However Paul Lambert will be able to call upon the services Ciaran Clark and Jores Okore who have formed an excellent partnership following injuries to Nathan Baker [knee] and Philippe Senderos [calf].
Jan 2 - 4:03 PM

Aston Villa and Crystal Palace couldn't find the back of the net and ended in a 0-0 draw.

We've had six draws today but this was one of the less exciting ones. Both teams missed a few chances, most notably Yannick Bolasie who hit the crossbar and Christian Benteke who missed a golden chance. The clean sheet helps fantasy managers who wisely invested in defenders from this match. Crystal Palace are still in the relegation zone but the point was a valuable as they are now only a point away from West Brom.

Aston Villa defender Ron Vlaar might remain on the bench even when he returns to full fitness.

Aston Villa have enjoyed some good form from Jores Okore and Ciaran Clark and manager Paul Lambert won't rush Vlaar back to the starting lineup. With Ron Vlaar possibly leaving in January, we don't blame Lambert for preparing for the future. At the same time, Vlaar playing and showing he is healthy could certainly improve his price on the transfer market.

Ron Vlaar is missing GW13 with a calf issue as he is still dealing with rumors about a transfer.

The rumors about Ron Vlaar are getting stronger and stronger and we may be seeing the defender move to a big club in January. That should make Villa cautious to make sure he doesn't suffer an injury beforehand so we don't expect to see Vlaar out there unless he is at 100%. His value would increase significantly at a bigger club.

Ron Vlaar's agent has started rumors about the defender possibly moving to Manchester United or Arsenal in the near future.

Both clubs would present a very interesting option for the Netherlands defender. Both are big clubs with big aspirations and both are in need of a solid center-back at the moment. Vlaar's contract expires in the summer but Aston Villa could try to move him in January in an attempt to get something in return. Vlaar is a proven defender at the top level and would be a great signing for any club.

Aston Villa defender Ron Vlaar was active in his return to action this weekend and finished with eight fantasy points.

The Villa defender registered two blocked shots, two passes intercepted, and two tackles won. That was decent for someone just returning from injury and Vlaar showed why he is a valid fantasy option even without a clean sheet. He is cheap enough in most formats to where he makes for an excellent choice in plus matchups. Villa just came out of a very rough stretch of matches and their schedule gets easier with QPR, Tottenham, West Ham, Southampton, Burnley, Crystal Palace, Leicester City, and West Brom up next.
