Sunderland have both Wes Brown and John O'Shea available for the vital Week 28 clash at Hull, but are struggling with other absences.
Sunderland quite rightly won their appeal against the sending-off of Brown although his availability won’t guarantee any game time – the defender struggles to play consecutive games in quick succession. O’Shea will not face any retrospective action and he could partner Santiago Vergini or Seb Coates in the heart of defence if Gus Poyet decides the risk with Brown is too great. Will Buckley [knee] and Emanuele Giaccherini [ankle] are the only injury absentees but Adam Johnson has been suspended pending a further enquiry into his alleged relations with an underage girl. Billy Jones, Jack Rodwell and Ricky Alvarez are back in contention. Mar 3 - 8:34 AM

England and Sunderland footballer Adam Johnson has been arrested on suspicion of sex with a 15-year-old girl.

Durham Police said in a statement: "A 27-year-old man was arrested earlier today on suspicion of sexual activity with a girl under 16. He remains in police custody and is helping officers with their enquiries." Sunderland have since announced Johnson has been suspended by the club pending the outcome of the police investigation. You should avoid selecting the player for your fantasy team for the foreseeable future.

Adam Johnson and Connor Wickham are fit to return for Sunderland's match with QPR.

Johnson is fit and ready to face QPR after recovering from thumb surgery while Wickham has made a quick recovery from a calf problem and has a "great chance" of returning against the Hoops. Jack Rodwell is rated as 50/50 but Poyet admits Giaccherini is likely to miss out "Emanuele is taking longer than I expected." Billy Jones has recovered from a slight hamstring niggle but a knee injury will keep Buckley and Lee Cattermole in the treatment room.

Sunderland have a host of players injured or doubtful for the Week 24 clash at Swansea.

Gus Poyet will factor Tuesdays’ game against Queens Park Rangers when considering the availability of his squad ahead of the trip to the Liberty Stadium "We need to be very careful for Saturday. When you have players who have a chance to get injured, you cannot risk them all. You need to make sure you keep someone safe for midweek." Lee Cattermole [knee] and Connor Wickham [calf] have been ruled out but Adam Johnson, Will Buckley, Billy Jones, Jack Rodwell and Emanuele Giaccherini will all be checked however Seb Larsson should return to the squad after he was rested midweek.

Sunderland will not risk Adam Johnson unnecessarily ahead of this weekends’ FA Cup fourth round tie against Fulham after the attacking midfielder picked up a minor calf injury.

Johnson is "unlikely" to feature along with teammate Lee Cattermole who suffered an injury setback recently – knee - following his recovery from a groin strain. The Black Cats are just above the relegation zone having taken just 1 point from a possible 15 since the derby win over Newcastle and first team coach Charlie Oatway was keen to stress the clubs main focus is on their Premier League survival. Defender Wes Brown [knee] will face a late fitness test but Jermain Defoe could feature as he looks to gain some valuable match-fitness while Liam Bridcutt is available again following suspension. Vito Mannone may get a rare outing in the first team but Gus Poyet will leave any goalkeeping decisions until the last moment.

Sunderland won their fourth straight Tyne-Wear derby thanks to a goal in the 90th minute by Adam Johnson as the Black Cats spoil Newcastle's day at St. James', 0-1.

The match began as this fixture often does, with a yellow card issued within two minutes. Unlike most Tyne-Wear battles however, the game would end with eleven men per side, as the red card stayed in the ref's pocket. It also was shaping up as an aberration in that the game was goalless heading into the final minute before stoppage time. That was when substitute Will Buckley was able to pick out Johnson, who scored from six yards. The win is just the third of the season for the Black Cats, but they are getting by with drawing 10 and losing only 4.

Adam Johnson opens his account four weeks into the season with a goal at home vs Tottenham.

Coming off an eight goal, six assists season in 2013 many expected Johnson to be the driving force behind Sunderland's attack. Unfortunately, up until this point, midfielders Sebastian Larsson, Jack Rodwell and Lee Cattermole have all been better - from a fantasy perspective at least. Hopefully his latest 15-point effort in Yahoo Fantasy's Premier League game will help get him going because at this point it's a little hard justifying his somewhat steep price tag.

Adam Johnson scored a great solo goal in Sunderland's 2-2 draw against Tottenham.

The solo goal was great but the Black Cats will have to ask themselves if they should attack more. They only possessed the ball for 36.6 % of the time and put up six totals shots to Tottenham's 15. The shot count is discouraging considering Sunderland was playing at home. With a lack of players who can create and finish, Sunderland will have to attack more in order to win enough games to stay up in the Premier League.

Sunderland took another dangerous step toward relegation with a 1-2 loss to West Ham United at the Stadium of Light this evening.

When Gus Poyet took over the Black Cats, the club really began to turn things around and looked to be heading in the right direction to stay in the top flight. Today's loss however gives them one point in their past six matches, and the club looks in as much disarray as ever now. What is especially puzzling is Poyet's use of Adam Johnson, easily their attacking player, by stating him on the bench in recent games. Then, when AJ comes on in the second half, he repeatedly contributes, but his efforts are too little, too late. Sunderland still have eight league games left, compared to the typical six or seven for the other clubs in the relegation fight, but most of the fixtures are extemely difficult. They needed a result today.

Adam Johnson continued his deadly scoring form, notching his seventh goal of the season and sixth in the past four matches, as Sunderland manhandled Newcastle United in the always heated Tyne-Wear Derby.

Sunderland are flying high under the tutelage of Gus Poyet, having lost just once now in their past nine games, and Johnson has been the star player to help make it happen. After going up 1-0 on a penalty converted by Fabio Borini, Johnson added to his account with a tap in off a deflected save of a Jack Colback shot. Colback himself would add the Black Cats third goal late on to put a final nail in Newcastle's coffin. Despite how the table looks, it is Sunderland right now who are the kings of Tyne-Wear, sweeping the series for the first time in over 45 years.

Sunderland moved out of the Premier League bottom three for the first time since August with a 1-0 win over 10-man Stoke.

Adam Johnson added his fifth goal in three Premier League games to secure Sunderland a vital three points and move them out of the relegation zone. Stoke's Steven N'Zonzi was sent off for a second bookable offence early in the second half but the away side were the better team for long spells, hitting the bar from a Ryan Shawcross header late on, and can feel unlucky to walk away from the Stadium of Light empty handed.

Sunderland started the match looking like they didn't belong but their hat trick hero from last weekend saved a point after an impressive fight back after going two goals down.

Fabio Borini sounded Sunderland's intention to compete with a goal after 30 minutes of dire play that saw Gus Poyet's men fall behind 2-0. After Borini scored on the counter it was up to last weekend's hero Adam Johnson to score an excellent equalizer from a tight angle. After their miserable start, Sunderland will be happy with a point while Southampton will be left wondering what happened to their lead.

Adam Johnson had a stormer of an afternoon for Sunderland, scoring three times against a poor Fulham defense, as the Black Cats move out of last position in the table with a 1-4 win over the Cottagers.

It had been a quiet season for the former England phenom who showed today that his skills are still to be admired, scoring from a free kick, then open play, and finally from the penalty spot. He formed a prolific attacking partnership with Sung-Yueng Ki all afternoon, adding an assist for the South Korean's goal to go along with his hat trick. After a miserable start, Sunderland have earned points from 5 of the past 6 matches, and have a kind schedule for the next month. Johnson should be bursting with confidence and could make for a nice midfield option over that stretch.

Sunderland took the lead with the first goal of the game thanks to Adam Johnson, but the Black Cats surrendered twice and failed to come away with any points in a 1-2 loss.

As the season quickly approaches the halfway mark, Sunderland are sitting on eight points and cannot afford to drop points when they have a rare lead. Today's result goes a long way toward their unwanted trip to Championship football. Johnson was in the right place when Hugo Lloris attempted to parry a shot out of harm's way, and the young English international showed his finishing touch with a confident strike. However, the Black Cats could not find a way to pad their lead and eventually Spurs broke down their defense. Neither Johnson or his teammates are on the fantasy radar.

Sunderland are interested in signing 28-year old Argentine winger Ignacio Scocco from United Arab Emirates outfit Al-Ain.

Scocco was on loan with Argentine side Newell’s Old Boys this season, scoring 27 goals, and is now keen for a move to the Premier League. Sunderland's interest suggests they are looking to add some competition for current wingers Adam Johnson and Sebastian Larsson.
