Wilson Palacios has been released by Stoke City leaving him free to sign with any team.
The Honduras international didn't figure for the Potters this season and Mark Hughes moved to release him rather than pick up the option on a player that probably makes decent wages for a little-used reserve. With Premier League football unlikely for the 2015-16 season, it is possible that Palacios will try to catch on with former boss Steve Bruce as Hull City look to rebound back into the Premier League at the first opportunity. Bruce acquired Palacios at both Birmingham and Wigan when he was managing those clubs. Fri, May 29, 2015 10:21:00 AM

Honduras needed a miracle to escape their group and it did not happen as they were beaten three times by Xherdan Shaqiri to sum up their 0-3 loss.

Even a blowout win by Honduras would not have made a difference as Ecuador would have secured the 2nd seed in the group after their draw with France. It was a frustrating day nonetheless, as they had some legitimate chances but could not finish, including a ball that looked destined to go in but was cleared off the line at the last moment. Wilson Palacios tried to draw a penalty at one point, on a foul that looked no less egregious than the one Greece received to save their tournament, but this referee wasn't convinced.

Honduras XI: Valladares, Figueroa, Bernardez, J Garcia, W Palacios, Bengtson, Costly, B Garcia, Espinoza, Claros, Beckeles

Honduras are technically still alive in this tournament but it would take a flurry of goals and an Ecuador loss to catch Ecuador on goal difference. Considering how porous the Swiss defense were in their last match it isn't entirely dismissible, but it would be the most shocking development this World Cup has seen yet were it to happen. Stoke's Wilson Palacios slots back in to midfield after serving a one game suspension. Maynor Figueroa and Roger Espinoza are both starting as expected.

Honduras XI: Valladares (c), Figueroa, Bernardez, Izaguirre, Bengtson, Costly, Garcia, Espinoza, Garrido, Claros, Beckeles

Wilson Palacios is suspended from this crucial match for the Hondurans as they have to view Ecuador as the best side to try and gain points from. Maynor Figueroa once again is in at fullback.

Honduras were consistently under attack by France all day long but did not concede until a penalty was awarded as a second yellow card for Wilson Palacios left them with 10 men and France would cruise to an eventual 3-0 win.

It took until the final minute in the first half for France to finally break through but once Palacios was sent off, they began converting their chances and easily disposed of the Hondurans. So far Group E is the only one going as expected.

Wilson Palacios scored Honduras' second goal in their 2-2 draw against Costa Rica.

Palacios finding form would be a boon to Stoke City. The midfielder may make a surprise return to the Potters' first team as Charlie Adam and Glen Whelan are injury doubts ahead of Stoke's match against Manchester City.

A new manager often means a second chance for players who have fallen out of favor and Wilson Palacios seems to be the beneficiary of Mark Hughes' appointment at Stoke.

This is good news for Palacios but presumably bad news for Steve Bruce and Hull who were tracking the holding midfielder. Hull have been bringing in a series of Premier League veterans - especially at the back - in an attempt to stave off an immediate return to the Championship. Perhaps losing out will force Bruce to get more creative with his transfer targets.

Wilson Palacios is rumored to be a target for Steve Bruce at Hull. Bruce brought Palacios to Birmingham and then Wigan, and even tried to get Palacios on loan last season. He may be more successful with Hull back in the Premier League.

Palacios' place at Stoke is in question and a move may be the best for all parties. Stoke are well stocked in central midfield, with Steven Nzonzi securing the defensive midfielder role last season, and defenders Geoff Cameron and Marc Wilson able to operate there as well.

Wilson Palacios will be given a chance to prove himself to new Stoke manager, Mark Hughes, after failing to generate any interest outside the club.

What an amazing fall from grace for a player who was another up-and-comer off the Wigan assembly line just a few years ago. But anonymous stints at Spurs and Stoke have left a puzzle of what ever happened to that player?
