Craig Gardner isn't usually considered a significant attacking contributor but his role has been rising under Tony Pulis culminating in a sneaky good 2016-17 season opener.
Gardner's contributions to the Albion season-opening win likely didn't show up in many highlight reels but it was there if you watched for it. Gardner completed five key passes and three successful crosses. In the other direction, he picked up an interception and a tackle won along with a successful clearance. Crystal Palace may still be sorting out their attack but they're a solid Premier League side and Gardner's effort on the road is a good sign for people looking for a player who may be available on waivers in draft leagues. Craig Gardner stopped Kasper Schmeichel in his tracks as he curled in a beautiful free kick for the equalizer as West Brom dented the Foxes title hopes with a 2-2 draw.

The Foxes were in the lead 2-1 and looking like they were going to continue their blistering pace atop the Premier League. It would likely have ended that way but for Craig Gardner's excellent free kick in the 50th minute. Gardner was dangerous all afternoon and his free kick was well enough disguised and placed that the Leicester City goalkeeper was rooted to the spot and didn't even make the slightest of moves towards the ball before it was in the back of the net.

Craig Gardner scored West Brom's first and assisted on their second as they won their ninth Premier League match of the season 3-2 over Crystal Palace.

Craig Gardner had quite a day for the Baggies who stormed to a 3-0 lead in the first 32 minutes at the Hawthorns and then held off a big Crystal Palace comeback to win 3-2. Gardner opened the scoring by slotting home Wayne Hennessey's deflection of a Salmon Rondon shot. Gardner assisted on the second goal that found Craig Dawson shockingly wide open in the middle of the penalty area on a set piece. The Baggies third goal was exceptional with Stephane Sessegnon finding a streaking Saido Berahino who volleyed home from close range. Gardner, Berahino, Sessegnon and Rondon were an impressive attacking group all match long. One wonders how well Albion would be doing if Tony Pulis hadn't stubbornly sat Berahino for so long.

It isn't going to happen often so it seems worth noting that Craig Gardner continues his strong season with a goal in a second consecutive match.

Quick quiz, which midfielder has scored the most fantasy points (Yahoo format) this season? Juan Mata, Yaya Toure, Oscar, Steven Gerrard, Morgan Schneiderlin or Craig Gardner. OK, trick question, the answer is Oscar but of that group Gardner is second and only seven points behind Chelsea's Brazilian creator for the season. That group is definitely part of a third tier of fantasy midfielders (Hazard and Cazorla are their own tier and then there's a group with guys like Silva, Eriksen, Sterling, Downing, Sigurdsson, Fabregas and Coutinho). The fact that Gardner is in a group that comes just after names like those is somewhat shocking but worth knowing for unique ownership formats heading into next season.

Craig Gardner picked a great time to score his first Baggies goal with the only score in West Brom's 1-0 win over local rivals Aston Villa.

Alan Irvine made a few changes for the local derby but it wasn't until the intro of Saido Berahino that Albion looked like scoring. Within two minutes of his introduction West Brom scored from a rebounded Brown Ideye shot. With Villa down a man, the Baggies cruised to the 1-0 victory.

Craig Gardner returns to the Baggies squad for Week 12 at Stamford Bridge after missing Week 11 through suspension.

Craig Gardner has been a significant presence for Alan Irvine this season and he is likely to return to the starting line-up for the sternest of Premier League tests in Week 12. The Baggies will need every bit of defensive fortitude available to them to withstand the team with the highest goal total in the league playing at home. He will be available but he shouldn't be on your "start" list unless you want to bet that Chelsea will have so much of the ball he'll get points from tackles and passes intercepted as West Brom try to park the bus.

With Craig Gardner suspended for the Week 11 match with Newcastle Alan Irvine will have to choose from Claudio Yacob or Youssouf Mulumbu to deputize at the base of the Baggies' midfield.

If you're looking for a solid midfield option in leagues that count things like tackles won and passes intercepted then Mulumbu or Yacob would be solid stand-ins. The trick is that you also have to be in a league that allows you to make that selection after the time when starting line-ups are announced because it isn't clear. I suspect that Mulumbu will start but he's not so attractive as an option that you'd want to take the risk by starting him without knowing for sure.

West Brom lost at Anfield on Saturday but Craig Gardner continued to contribute strong real and fantasy performances for the Baggies in the loss.

Craig Gardner is hardly a household name. It wasn't even clear that he would be a starter when he arrived at the Hawthorns over the summer. Instead, the holding midfielder has displaced last season's starter Yousouf Mulumbu and done nicely averaging eight points/match in the Yahoo format. Two blocked shots, two interceptions and six tackles won were pegged back by Gardner committing four fouls but on balance it was still a very solid, unheralded performance. He's definitely an under-the-radar pick-up in unique ownership leagues.

It was an ugly fantasy week for West Brom but the best of the bunch was Craig Gardner who has put together a surprisingly strong fantasy season so far.

Gardner managed to eek his way into the Week 4 Joel Ward All-stars team on the back of three passes intercepted and four tackles won. His total would have been higher had he not been shown a yellow card which dragged him down out of double digits. The real note here is that West Brom are close to being entirely fantasy irrelevant right now with Saido Berahino and Yousouf Mulumbu having put up the only two really remarkable weekly performances for the team thus far with neither having repeated their excellence in any of the Baggies' other matches.

West Bromwich Albion are set to finalise a deal for Craig Gardner, Sky Sports understands.

Gardner is a free agent after leaving Sunderland, having struggled to hold down a place under Gus Poyet. West Brom need to rebuild after allowing a number of senior players to leave, and Sky Sports understand the former Aston Villa and Birmingham City man is now in talks about a move to The Hawthorns. The midfielder is hard-working, comfortable on the ball and is also capable of spectacular goals, so his signing would represent a decent bit of business for the Baggies

Craig Gardner scored a wonderful goal that proved to be the match winner as Sunderland beat Southampton 1-0 in the FA Cup.

Both teams fielded a mixture of starters and backups as it was apparent the FA Cup wasn't their number one priority. Sunderland ended up winning in on a spectacular goal from Craig Garner that came from 25 yards out early in the second half. Sunderland move on to the FA Cup quarter-finals while Southampton get more time to focus on the Premier League.

West Brom are on the trail of £2million-rated Craig Gardner.

26-year-old Gardner struggled for midfield starts last season and is likely to find it even more difficult now that Paolo Di Canio has added nine players to the Sunderland squad. Gardner has been forced to cover at right-back on many occasions but with the Black Cats on the look out for specialist in that position, his time at the Stadium of Light could be drawing to a close and a move to West Brom may make sense for all parties.
