Aston Villa edged out local rivals Birmingham City in the Capital One cup but the win came at a cost as Gabby Agbonlahor was replaced during the break because of a calf complaint.
Tim Sherwood confirmed post-match that defender Joleon Lescott – who also appeared to be limping – was a planned [tactical] substitution allowing Ciaran Clark to drop back in at centre half. Agbonlahor picked up a muscular problem and the Villa forward is an early doubt for the trip to Anfield this weekend. However there was better news as Gary Gardner – ankle ligaments - is set to resume full training within the next fortnight while defender Jose Crespo completed another 90 minutes for the development side following his pre-season groin strain. Gabby Agbonlahor is questionable for week one after picking up a minor knock during last night's match against Wolverhampton.

Agbonlahor is currently being assessed after picking up the knock last night. He is only a fantasy option during the very last rounds of fantasy drafts so the injury shouldn't be a huge bummer to fantasy owners. Expect to know more about his injury in the next few days but flat out ignore him in fantasy drafts for now.

Aston Villa have already found the replacement for Christian Benteke in Ghanaian striker Jordan Ayew.

Ayew's brother is already at Swansea and it seems like both of them will play in the Premier League next season. Jordan is a 23-year old striker that comes for a fee in the region of $14-$19 million. He had 13 goals in League 1 last season while playing for Lorient, which was his highest goal tally in six seasons in the top flight. Ayew will likely be a nailed on striker at Aston Villa but it'll be hard to use him in fantasy as he's not a proven goal-scorer at this stage.

Gabby Agbonlahor will return to Aston Villa's squad this weekend after missing a month with a hamstring injury.

Agbonlahor has been training for over a week now and should be fit for a big role this weekend. It's unknown whether he'll start, especially with Aston Villa playing well without him, but an appearance off the bench is very likely. We wouldn't trust him in fantasy due to the uncertainty, so if you want an Aston Villa forward in your fantasy squad, it's recommended you go with Christian Benteke.

Gabby Agbonlahor will miss the visit of Everton in GW35 after Tim Sherwood confirmed the forward has just returned to light training following injury.

Agbonlahor has not featured since pulling up with a hamstring problem during the victory at White Hart Lane two weeks ago despite the initial optimism regarding the severity of the injury. The forward missed the semi-final win over Liverpool and the narrow loss at the Etihad but it is envisaged that Agbonlahor should be ready to join the main group early next week. The treatment room is beginning to clear at a crucial moment for Villa as Aly Cissokho and Philippe Senderos made the bench last weekend while Alan Hutton has a good chance of playing this weekend. Scott Sinclair will also be added to the squad after he sat out of the game against his parent club.

Gabby Agbonlahor was fantastic over the past weekend as he scored twice in Aston Villa's huge win over Sunderland.

Agbonlahor is not known as a goal-scorer but netted twice over the weekend. This was also his third goal in two matches, as the forward has been extremely active under new manager Tim Sherwood. Gabby doesn't get enough phantom points to be considered every week, so we recommend you leave him on the bench for the near future. The goal scoring will end soon.

Gabby Agbonlahor will return from a one-match ban in order to face Crystal Palace this weekend.

Agbonlahor faces Crystal Palace, who weren't as bad without a manager as we thought, but the appeal for home goals is there. We don't recommend Agbonlahor in anything but the deepest formats, but he is an option as he is someone who likes to get forward and can create chances.

Gabby Agbonlahor is suspended for GW19 due to an accumulation of yellow cards.

The Aston Villa forward had his red card rescinded from week 17 but then picked up a yellow in week 18 and will now serve a one-match ban. Andreas Weimann will likely return to the starting lineup and Christian Benteke is expected to lead the line. Benteke is the one worth owning in fantasy if you want a Villa forward in their great week 19 matchup.

Gabby Agbonlahor has won his red card appeal and will not have to serve a three-match ban.

The forward was sent off during Aston Villa's last match but he has won his appeal and that has been overturned. Gabby has never been sent off in his Premier League career and that remains true. He has not been a great fantasy option this season and despite playing tomorrow, it's hard to consider him in anything other than the deepest of formats.

Gabby Agbonlahor was sent off during Aston Villa's 1-1 draw against Manchester United.

Agbonlahor committed a tough challenge against Ashley Young on Saturday and was sent off as a result. He will now be serving a three-match ban that will last through gameweek 20 and will be eligible to return in the Premier League against Leicester City on the 10th of January. Christian Benteke takes a slight bump down with Agbonlahor not present to set him up while no other Villa attackers become an option during the suspension.

Gabriel Agbonlahor scored for Aston Villa as they picked up an unexpected point against Southampton in the Monday night Premier League clash.

This was a vastly improved performance from Aston Villa, who were well organised from the start and took a first half lead when Agbonlahor took advantage of an error of judgement from Southampton goalkeeper Fraser Forster. Paul Lambert's men resisted an onslaught from the Saints in the second half, that was until the 81st minute when Nathaniel Clyne scored a fine goal to deny the home side a vital three points. Still, a point moves Villa a little further from the relegation zone, up to 16th.

Aston Villa have stunned Liverpool in the middle of Anfield by winning 1-0.

Villa have started the season in spectacular fashion, coming out with ten points out of their first four matches for the first time since 1998. Villa took the lead through a scrappy Gabby Agbonlahor goal and dominated the rest of the match, looking like the better team. They will finish the gameweek in second place after Chelsea, just two points behind. The talk about Aston Villa fighting the relegation battle has to stop now.

Gabby Agbonlahor has signed a new deal with Aston Villa that will keep him at the club until 2018.

The forward is an important part of Aston Villa's squad, despite being a poor fantasy choice. Agbonlahor is a good midfielder who can create chances and attract defensive attention from the opposition. The problem for him is that he doesn't score nor shoot enough to gain good fantasy value and was actually averaging negative points through the first two weeks. He scored a goal in week 3, but trying to guess when Gabby scores is a terrible way to play fantasy soccer. He has 68 goals in 276 matches in an Aston Villa shirt.

Aston Villa forward Gabby Agbonlahor has been terrible for fantasy managers in the first two weeks of the season.

Agbonlahor had negative four points in week two after finishing with just one point in the first match. The forward has struggled to rack up any kind of fantasy stats and committed four fouls in week two to make matters worse. Gabby has never been a premium option, and with no good strikers at Villa to get at the end of his chances, his fantasy potential remains fairly low. When Christian Benteke returns, Agbonlahor's value will rise, but he will only be an option in the deepest of leagues.

Aston Villa fans have voted Gabby Agbonlahor as the most under-performing player this season.

24% of fans believe Agbonlahor was the most under-performing player while 19% think Andreas Weimann deserves the award. It was a tough season for both forwards, partially because they had to play alongside sub-par players. Both players are best when supplying a goal-scoring strikers such as Christian Benteke but Benteke and Libor Kozak both suffered season ending injuries. Villa's success next season will be dependent on the play of Agbonlahor and he will need to improve if he wants to remain at the club long-term as Paul Lambert has shown little patience when it comes to under-performing players.
