Norwich’s excellent away record shuddered to a halt at Southampton, leaving question marks as to whether they are equipped to face the demands of a long, hard Premier League season…
The optimistic will point to right-back Steven Whittaker’s (soft) sending off after half an hour. Plus, Southampton looked a different animal having shed the weight of the Europa League. But the fact that eight of the Norwich starting line-up were involved in the relegation of two season ago is a worry. For all their defensive organisation and tidy midfield play, they lack cutting edge. Manager Alex Neil has been trying to add a striker all summer – bids for Stoke’s Jon Walters and Wolves’ Benik Afoe are the latest to fall on deaf ears. Early season star performers Nathan Redmond was nullified and Wes Hoolahan forsaken in the re-shuffle after Whittaker’s red card. It's hard to call the penalty Steven Whittaker conceded the difference in a 4-0 match but it certainly got the ball rolling on the Ryan Giggs era at Manchester United.

Things are starting to look pretty grim for Norwich's chances of staying in the Premier League next season. They aren't yet in the relegation zone but the teams below them are inching closer and their schedule continues to be brutal down the stretch. Canaries supporters will have to cross their fingers and pray that they can do just enough to stay up but they shouldn't count on it.

Steven Whittaker's campaign was hampered by injury, but he is looking for a fresh start next season.

Whittaker performed well when available and called upon, but will have a fight to unseat Russell Martin from the right-back spot.
