Gabriel Obertan required surgery on his injured hamstring, ruling the winger out of action for the next three to four months.
Obertan started the first three matches of the season but fell out of contention thereafter, having mustered only 40 minutes before succumbing to injury. Still, this is further bad injury news after the wide man was thought to be nearing a return in the previous status update back in late October. It would appear to expect to see him again training at some point in March. Nov 20 - 11:47 AM

Injured trio Gabriel Obertan, Emmanuel Riviere and Karl Darlow are all expected to return within the next 2-4 weeks as the injury problems slowly begin to ease at Newcastle.

Steve McClaren provided an update ahead of this weekends’ derby game against Sunderland "Manu is two or three weeks away. Karl Darlow is four weeks away and Gabriel Obertan is three or four weeks." The news will come as a welcome boost for the club who had up-to thirteen players at risk of missing out last weekend. However, the Tynesiders’ were able to welcome back Jack Colback, Daryl Janmaat, Paul Dummett and Massadio Haidara while Cheick Tiote made only his second PL start of the year. The lift proved to be the perfect tonic as Newcastle secured their first PL win of the campaign with a comprehensive [6-2] victory over Norwich. Rolando Aarons and Kevin Mbabu have stepped up their recoveries - calf and hamstring strains - and could force their way into contention for game week ten.

Gabriel Obertan has started the last two games for Newcastle United but his run of starts may be coming to a quick close.

From Weeks 11-26, Obertan made it onto the pitch for a grand total of 27 minutes, but with the recent injury to Remy Cabella, Obertan was given a start in the last two matches. Recent word indicates that Cabella may be ready to return to the squad this weekend, but whether it is in a starting capacity is still uncertain. Should he play a bench role, expect Obertan to earn one more start against a struggling Everton at a cheap fantasy price.

Newcastle made it four wins on the spin as the Magpies grabbed the only goal of the game in narrow victory over Liverpool at St James’ Park on Saturday – but the win came at a cost.

Gabriel Obertan cut a forlorn figure as he was stretchered off during the first half with a serious looking thigh injury. The French winger has been outstanding since his return to the limelight following a summer of uncertainty – Obertan was transfer listed and left to train with the youth squad. Although there were several enquiries about the player’s availability no firm offers were received and Obertan remained. His return to the squad – starting the last four games – has sparked a revival on Tyneside but this latest setback could keep the winger out for at least a month providing young England winger Rolando Aarons with his chance. Papiss Cisse was also withdrawn because of an ongoing knee issue.

Gabriel Obertan scored the only goal of the game in Newcastle's 1-0 over Leicester to take some of the pressure off manager Alan Pardew.

Obertan was something of a forgotten man last season, and had not started a Premier League game for 18 months prior to the start of the season, but he's been one of Newcastle's best performers in recent matches. The midfielder scored the only goal of a poor game with less than 20 minutes remaining to give Alan Pardew's men their first win pf the campaign, but they remain in the relegation zone. Leicester created very few chances in this one, and their fast start to the season is slowing right down.

Gabriel Obertan has been tipped by Alan Pardew to start for Newcastle United again this weekend against Leicester City after the manager was impressed with the midfielder's performance against Swansea City.

Obertan got the nod over marquee summer signing Remy Cabella last time out, and his hard-working shift was rewarded with an assist and another start for the Magpies. In any fantasy game, he should be available for a very low price - he is currently less than 3m in the Yahoo game on the heels of a 13 point haul. Newcastle haven't carried many attractive fantasy options so far this season, with the recent exception of Papiss Cisse, but for that price, anything better than a red card would justify his purchase.

Gabriel Obertan has had a terrific pre-season and will contend for a place at Newcastle according to boss Alan Pardew.

Obertan has been out of favor at Newcastle and hasn't started a Premier League game in over 18-months. Despite the drought, the midfielder has played well this summer. He has finally gotten healthy and Newcastle fans were giving him full support during their last friendly match against Schalke on Sunday. Look for Obertan to start on the bench at the beginning of the season but don't be surprised if he can earn a starting spot throughout the season.
