Sunderland is starting to make a habit of spoiling any thoughts of an easy three points against the big clubs.
At the Stadium of Light on Tuesday night, the Black Cats held strong against the Premier League's second-place side, taking a point in a 0-0 draw with Tottenham to take them off the bottom of the table. Sunderland welcomed back defender Lamine Kone and midfielder Didier Ndong, who returned from the African Cup of Nations, while goalkeeper Vito Mannone made three critical saves to help the club to a clean sheet despite holding only 27 percent possession and managing only one shot on target. Sunderland couldn't break its five-game winless streak in the Premier League, but its last two points have come against Spurs and Liverpool in what is surely a promising sign to manager David Moyes. Vito Mannone will make his long-awaited return from elbow surgery on Wednesday when Sunderland take on Notts County in the Checkatrade Trophy.

Speaking ahead of the game, first-team coach Robbie Stockdale confirmed his side would include "three or four senior players to compliment the younger ones" for the clash against their League Two counterparts. Mannone has been side-lined since August but tonight will be the goalkeepers "comeback game" and he should be joined by another long-term absentee who is ready to step up his recovery from summer knee surgery: "Seb [Larsson] will play but we aren’t putting a timescale on how long," said Stockdale before adding. "Jason [Denayer] and Donald [Love] will [also] play," while a decision on Adnan Januzaj, who has recently recovered from an ankle ligament injury, will not be made until the last moment.

Sunderland manager David Moyes is just now starting to see good news on the injury front with both Vito Mannone and Fabio Borini edging closer to full fitness.

Mannone has missed the last two months after suffering a nasty training ground injury where he fractured his elbow. Meanwhile, Borini has missed the same amount of time after tearing a groin muscle in late-August, but Moyes said he is more than pleased with their quick recoveries: "Vito has been doing an awful lot of goalkeeping work and diving. He is not far away. Borini has been running too so there are just signs that these boys are coming back and maybe getting closer to being ready. I think it as much down to their determination. They have shown great desire to get back quickly."

Jordan Pickford could line up against Southampton this weekend after Vito Mannone was rushed to hospital for further tests following a training ground injury.

Concerns at present, are that Mannone may have suffered a fractured elbow, although there has been no official update since David Moyes spoke to the written press ahead of tonights' League Cup tie against Burnley. "Unfortunately, this morning, we’ve taken another injury with Vito on his elbow," he said. "We’re just about to take him to hospital to get it checked. It could be serious and we’re a little bit worried about it, but I couldn’t tell you how good or bad it is yet." With only two Premier League starts, which includes a 4-1 loss at White Hart Lane, Moyes is not worried about Pickford being thrown in at the deep end: "I saw Jordan play for Preston last season quite a bit and I was impressed by how he was."

Sunderland grabbed a crucial point today that lifts them out of the relegation zone as they put together another solid defensive effort in a 0-0 draw with Arsenal.

Make that three clean sheets in four for the Black Cats as they continue to grind out results in typical Sam Allardyce fashion. The attack had their chances to score with a Patrick van Aanholt free kick clanging off the top corner of the woodwork coming closest. The defense was the story though, as the center back pairing of Younes Kaboul and Lamine Kone limited Arsenal's ability to operate in the final third and what chances the Gunners did create, Vito Mannone did well to stop six shots on target. Sunderland move above Norwich on goal difference and look the favorites to stave off relegation, as they are playing consistently better football right now than the Canaries or the Magpies.

Dick Advocaat says two more pieces of the jigsaw are required to complete his Sunderland vision. But chairman Ellis Short says that up to seven have to go…

It’s already been a busy summer at the Stadium of Light, but there is a bit of work to do yet before the manager and chairman happy. Boss Dick Advocaat says he is two short of his vision. Chairman Ellis Short is happy to back his manager, but insists the wage bill needs to be trimmed. The two additions required are thought to be a striker and a creative midfield player, the players to go are easier to forecast. Valentin Roberge and Charis Mavrias were left out of the pre-season squad, so clearly considered deadwood. Ex-Brighton pair Will Buckley and Liam Birdcutt made the trip but the club will listen to offers. Strikers Steven Fletcher and Danny Graham have both been linked with moves and are in the final year of their contracts. Vito Mannone could also be on his way. The keeper has not featured since conceding ten in two matches in October and academy product Jordan Pickford is highly thought of.

After conceding at least one goal in each of the first four games, Vito Mannone and Sunderland hold Swansea goalless to earn their second consecutive shutout.

Sunderland have been one of the weakest offensive teams in the PL after six games. Good thing for them, they've also been one of the stingiest when it comes to conceding. Thru six games Sunderland have given up just 6 goals, good for third-best in the league. Their schedule has been favorable to start the year so look for them to start conceding in the near future. Over the next eight games they'll face the top four, plus a few middle-of-the-pack teams. Hold onto Vito this week, but look for a replacement when they travel to Southampton in two weeks.

Vito Mannone and Tom Heaton stopped six shots apiece to help their side earn a clean sheet on Saturday.

Each team found the target six times and hit the woodwork, but after 90-plus and 31 total shots neither side could get the job done. Sunderland and Burnley have now combined for seven draws through its first 10 fixtures to start the season. The two bottom table teams continue to hover just above the relegation zone due to draws. Sunderland will look to get their first win of the season at home next weekend in a tough test vs Swansea and Burnley will look to do the same as they travel to West Brom.

Goalkeeper Vito Mannone has signed a new two-year contract with Sunderland.

Mannone's contract extension was triggered automatically due to the number of games the 26-year-old Italian had played for the club. The goalkeeper's position appears under threat following the recent arrival of Costel Pantilimon from Manchester City, but he is happy to remain at Sunderland and establish himself as first-choice.

Vito Mannone marked his return to the Emirates by watching four goals go past him as Sunderland lost 4-1 to the Italian keeper's former club Arsenal.

On a day when Arsenal honored one former player, Dennis Bergkamp, they weren't nearly as kind to another returnee in the form of Vito Mannone. It is hard to blame the goalkeeper given the quality of the defending in front of him. Sunderland allowed two spectacular passing sequences for the first and third goals. The second goal was the result of a telegraphed back pass to Mannone that should never have been made. The final goal was a wide open header from Laurent Koscielny on a corner kick that Mannone was powerless to stop.

Manchester United's season of misery hit new depths as Sunderland won a slapstick penalty shootout to secure a Capital One Cup final place against Manchester City at Wembley.

Sunderland's goalkeeper Vito Mannone denied Adnan Januzaj and, crucially, Rafael in one of the worst penalty shoot-outs in the history of football. There were no fewer than seven misses out of ten penalties, but the Black Cats won't care because they're on their way to Wembley. Jonny Evans had put Manchester United level in the tie to take it to extra-time, before Phil Bardsley looked to have won it in the 119th minute after a horrendous blunder by David De Gea. Javier Hernandez levelled things up again in injury time to force penalties, but it was Sunderland's day.

Vito Mannone made four saves to get Sunderland a valuable road point in their efforts to escape the lower reaches of the table.

The match didn't see a lot of action with only five shots on target between the two teams. Aston Villa had 4 of those shots meaning that Sunderland will consider themselves lucky to have a road point on the basis of one shot on target for their troubles.

Sunderland goalkeeper Vito Mannone is hoping to retain his place in the starting XI for Sunday's home Premier League game against Manchester City.

Mannone started the Capital One Cup win against Southampton as current Premier League keeper Keiren Westwood was suffering from concussions. Westwood has done nothing wrong for Sunderland though, so if he has fully recovered ahead of this weekend it would be a surprise if Mannone took his place.

Sunderland have signed Arsenal goalkeeper Vito Mannone.

Mannone joins on a two-year deal for an undisclosed fee, ending his eight-year stay with Arsenal. One would think the Italian has left the Gunners to take his place as Sunderland's new number one goalkeeper following Simon Mignolet's departure, although Keiren Westwood may have something to say about that.

Sunderland have agreed a fee for Arsenal's third-choice keeper, Vito Mannone.

Mannone could be surplus to requirements at Arsenal if, as rumors suggest, they are in the market for another experienced keeper like Liverpool's Pepe Reina. Mannone has looked promising in his limited outings for the Gunners and will give Kieren Westwood real competition in the race to replace Simon Mignolet in net.
