Shinji Kagawa's frustrating time at Old Trafford has come to an end as he has been officially announced as a Borussia Dortmund player once again.
The star of consecutive Bundesliga titles before coming to England, Japan international Kagawa will be excited to return to a place where he is far more likely to see the pitch. The arrivals of Juan Mata and Angel di Maria have further limited the chances of Kagawa seeing significant playing time. The massive transfer fees paid out this summer and corresponding high salaries means that Kagawa is a luxury they can no longer afford. Sun, Aug 31, 2014 12:36:00 PM

In a match that meant everything to Japan and very little to Colombia, Japan could not stop the Colombian attack as they bow out of the competition in a 1-4 final.

It was a disappointing showing from the Samurai Blue in this tournament, as they were given one of the easier groups to escape from, but they could only muster a draw from their three matches. Down in the first 20 minutes after conceding a pen, they showed resolve and fought back to equalize just moments before the halftime whistle. It was all Colombia in the 2nd half though, as they burned a leaky Japanese defense three times, twice by Jackson Martinez.

Japan Starting XI: Kawashima, Uchida, Honda, Nagatomo, Okazaki, Kagawa, Okubo, Aoyama, Konno, Hasebe (C), Yoshida.

Manchester United midfielder Shinji Kagawa is back in the starting lineup after making a difference off the bench in Japan's last match. Japan are in a must win situation if they want to progress into the next round but an Ivory Coast win against Greece would eliminate them despite the result of this match.

Japan XI: Kawashima, Uchida, Honda, Nagatomo, Okazaki, Okubo, Konno, Yamaguchi, Hasebe (c), Osako, Yoshida

Shinji Kagawa, who was not very impressive in Japan's loss to Ivory Coast, is dropped from the XI though Southampton's Maya Yoshida keeps his spot in defense. Like Greece, Japan are sitting on zero points and will desperately need a win though a draw would still keep both sides alive.

Ryan Giggs surprised everyone, especially fantasy managers, with a young lineup against Hull City today.

Giggs chose a starting XI of De Gea, Valencia, Jones, Smalling, Büttner, Carrick, Fellaini, Kagawa, Januzaj, Lawrence, Wilson. It included eight changes from his starting XI against Sunderland over the weekend. Managers who chose to go with Manchester players for the double gameweek were seriously hurt but it seems Manchester players were so popular, many managers are still on a level ground. Avoid Manchester United players for the final week of the season.

Shinji Kagawa produced a few promising moments late against Real Sociedad on Wednesday after he moved into a central role but he was marginalized starting in a wide position.

There was a great deal of optimism entering the season about Shinji Kagawa a) getting more playing time under David Moyes and b) producing the results expected last season for a bargain price with the increased minutes. If Wednesday's Champions League match is any indication then fantasy managers shouldn't expect any change soon. David Moyes' decision to start Kagawa in a wide role saw him marginalized and ineffective. Only when Javier Hernandez was withdrawn and Wayne Rooney moved into the lone striker role with Kagawa in a central supporting role did the creative midfielder start producing some results. Nothing came of a number of promising opportunities but chances were created for Rooney and Kagawa that on other days would have resulted in goals. The problem for Kagawa's long term outlook is that Rooney is likely to continue to occupy his best position when van Persie returns to health. es

Shinji Kagawa has struggled to secure a place in the starting eleven at Manchester United and his frustration likely grew as he was pulled off at halftime.

With Manchester United level at halftime, Shinji Kagawa was pulled off in favor of young Adnan Januzaj. That United proceeded to lose at home to a mediocre West Bromwich Albion team will add to the Japanese international's misery as well as that of under-fire David Moyes. With Kagawa's role apparently still in question and United's form poor fantasy managers should remove Kagawa from their thinking.

Shinji Kagawa had been a non-factor in United's season until Tuesday's match when he made his first start of the season.

The results of Kagawa's first start were exceptional from an attacking point of view. Manchester United exploded for four goals against a relatively good team. To underscore United's dominance, they missed two easy opportunities in addition to the four that they did convert. Kagawa didn't figure in the scoring but at a reasonable price and back in favor he could be a serious bargain. Whether you want to take advantage of the bargain for the Manchester Derby or wait until the following weekend is a judgment call. I'd lean toward waiting another week.
