Ronald Koeman confirmed during Sundays’ post-match press-conference that defender Jose Fonte had been withdrawn at half-time due to "pain in his hamstring."
Fonte was replaced at the break by Maya Yoshida as the Saints cruised through the opening forty-five against their south coast rivals AFC Bournemouth. Goals from Steven Davis and Graziano Pelle put Southampton in command but a reshuffle by Eddie Howe changed impetus and the Cherries’ were unlucky to leave St Marys’ empty handed following a gallant second half display. Koeman will be hoping that Fonte can make the trip to Wearside next weekend as his withdrawal appears to be more of a precaution "It wasn’t big, but we didn’t want to take any risks," but further tests will confirm the extent of the any damage. If Fonte does miss game week twelve, then a two-week international break should see the 31-year-old return for their next Premier League match against Stoke City. Nov 2 - 4:48 AM

Jose Fonte lead Southampton to a 3-0 win over Groningen.

It was just a friendly match but Southampton were the better team the whole way and Jose Fonte was fantastic. He scored the first goal for the Saints and then set up Maya Yoshida perfectly for a chance to go up 2-0 but the Japanese international missed by a hair. Sadio Mane and Grazianno Pelle added the other two goals but it's worth noting Pelle came off the bench. The Italian striker started 37 matches last season and it would be extremely surprising to see him coming off the bench this season, so keep an eye out as that story develops.

Jose Fonte has been an unsung hero for years at Southampton through multiple divisions but he is finally getting some praise from the Premier League and fantasy media.

The arrival of Dejan Lovern coincided with Southampton's rise to defensive prominence under Mauricio Pochettino last season. As a result, many assumed that it was Lovern who was the difference. As it turned out, it was the center back who stayed behind, Jose Fonte, who was the real difference-maker. While Lovern has struggled to even get starting time, Fonte has taken plaudits in the media and found himself the fourth highest scoring fantasy defender in the league this season. It may not be pretty or elegant but it is effective.

Jose Fonte returns from a one-match ban to face Chelsea in gameweek 19.

Fonte was suspended for week 18 due to an accumulation of yellow cards but will return in week 19 to face Chelsea. He is nailed on to start in Southampton's back line and is a decent fantasy choice despite having a low chance at a clean sheet. He can contribute through tackles and interceptions and can score the occasional goal, making him a low risk play this week. Florin Gardos or Maya Yoshida will drop from the starting lineup.

Jose Fonte has been suspended for GW18 due to accumulation of yellow cards.

Fonte received his fifth booking of the season and invoked a one-match ban against Everton last weekend. He will now miss the match against Crystal Palace but will be available on Sunday when they face Chelsea. Maya Yoshida or Florin Gardon will most likely replace Fonte and will be good one-week fantasy options. The problem with using either one is not knowing whether they get the start ahead of time. Use them only in leagues where you can make changes up until kickoff.

Jose Fonte registered a great stat line that included a clean sheet in Southampton's match this weekend.

Fonte finished the game with 18 fantasy points and his average is now at 8 points per game on the season. With Southampton's defense proving to be one of the best in the Premier League and Fonte's ability to get a lot of phantom points, he remains a good option for fantasy managers. Unlike his defensive partners Nathaniel Clyne and Ryan Bertrand, Fonte is owned by under 1% of managers and can prove to be a great differential option.

Jose Fonte helped Southampton to another clean sheet today in their home match against Stoke City.

Southampton have the best defense in the Premier League, at least statistically, as they've only allowed five goals in nine matches. Second behind them is Chelsea, who've allowed eight goals, and everyone else is in the double digits. That is a huge jump between them and everyone else, so having at least one of their defenders is very helpful. The obvious choices are Nathaniel Clyne and Ryan Bertrand, but the Jose Fonte has had a quietly strong season and is known to be able to score a goal or two. Use him with confidence going ahead.

Southampton have acquired defender Toby Alderweireld from Atletico Madrid on a season-long loan.

This is a great move the Saints, who have just reinforced their defense with a number of signings. Alderweireld can play both center-back and right-back, and it's unclear where he'll play at the moment. The Saints have Jose Fonte locked in as a starter and recently acquired center-back Florin Gardos to partner him, so there may not be a place for Alderweireld there. At right-back, they have Nathaniel Clyne, who has played well going forward this season, but can be a liability on defense. Regardless of where he plays, we expect Alderweireld to start and be a good fantasy option for managers.

Southampton are reportedly after Belgium international Toby Alderweireld.

Alderweireld is a good defender who would be a likely starter at Southampton. He can play both center-back and right-back, so it's not certain where exactly he'll line up, but he will immediately improve the Saints already solid defense. The Saints are also in pursuit of Tottenham's Andros Townsend, who would add an exciting option to their attack.

Southampton are reportedly in the final stages of wrapping up the signature of Romanian center back Floran Gardos to replace the departed Dejan Lovern.

The doomsayers have been lining up all summer to crush Southampton after the losses of high profile members of their surprisingly strong first team last season. They have responded with a variety of new acquisitions and the latest appears to be arriving from Steaua Bucharest. Whether the new names can replace the production of the better-known players they are replacing remains to be seen but the Saints are at least close to having a full squad assuming Gardos joins Fraser Forster, Ryan Bertrand, Saphir Taidir, Dusan Tadic, and Graziano Pelle. It will be interesting to see how so many new faces come together under a new manager in Ronald Koeman early in the season.

Jose Fonte has signed a new deal at Southampton that will keep him at the club until 2017.

After all his friends left, Fonte decided to cash in at Southampton as one of the more experienced players the club currently has. Fonte was also named the captain for the forthcoming season. If the Saints can keep their defensive level from last year after losing Dejan Lovren and Luke Shaw, Fonte could be a good fantasy choice, especially with the likely arrival of Fraser Forster in goal. Look for Saints to regress but don't be surprised if they are a mid-table team in the coming season.

Jose Fonte is questionable for Southampton's game against West Ham on Saturday.

Fonte has been dealing with a minor problem and was assessed in Friday's training session but we have not heard the results of his status yet. With Dejan Lovren and Jos Hooveld out, Fonte will feature if he is even close to being to full health.

Jose Fonte suffered a shin injury last time out but has already recovered and is available for Southampton's next match against Sunderland.

This is good news for the Saints as they are already without Dejan Lovren and missing Fonte would have been too big of a loss. The central defender has been fantastic this season and has been a great fantasy asset as of late. Southampton's next Premier League match is against West Ham and the Hammers are not known for their attack, making Fonte a premium pick for the week.

Jose Fonte scored and contributed to a clean sheet in a Southampton win that saw a number of balls hit the post but only one go in.

The Saints center backs have contributed five goals so far this season and the latest - yesterday's rebound from Jose Fonte - was enough to secure an away win at Hull City. The match saw a number of shots from both sides hit the post. The one that found it's way through was just as dramatic with Steve Harper producing a double save before Fonte turned the second rebound into the net for the winner.

Southampton have once again been linked with Italian defender Davide Astori.

The 26 year old Cagliari center-back would be a great addition to the Saints squad, who have struggled defensively when missing Dejan Lovren or Jose Fonte. Southampton started the season in fantastic defensive form but as Lovren and Fonte missed games because of injuries or suspensions, the defense struggled mightily. Astori has held a regular spot in the Serie A this season and would provide instant improvement.
