Rio Ferdinand has taken to Twitter to announce that his move to Queens Park Rangers has become official today.
Here's hoping that the QPR Board drove down the cost of the pay packet before signing on the dotted line but Harry Redknapp has another former big name for his collection in the form of Rio Ferdinand. The former best defender in the Premier League struggled to make a contribution at Old Trafford last season and was out of contract as a result. If used judiciously by Redknapp maybe he can be a valuable third center back but it seems likely he's being paid like a starter. Aren't there better places 'arry could have used this money? QPR has been a home for big name veterans with big salaries on the decline in recent years and they look to be considering the addition of another in free agent Rio Ferdinand.

Rio Ferdinand struggled mightily in his final season at Manchester United despite not being asked to start every week. Queens Park Rangers were relegated two seasons ago with similarly big names approaching the end of their careers. Despite those two things, QPR and Harry Redknapp are talking to Ferdinand as the Rs prepare to return to the Premier League. If he can turn back the clock a year or two it is a solid acquisition, if the injury issues continue then they may find themselves in similar financial straights after another relegation.

Rio Ferdinand looked well past his prime as Manchester United were embarrassed by Olympiakos in Tuesday's Champions League knock-out first leg in Greece.

The long-tenured United center back has struggled with injuries over the last couple of seasons and it appears that the age and injury have finally caught up with him. Based on what we have seen since his return to the line-up, you have to consider Manchester United's defenders and David De Gea unplayable in fantasy given their prices and Ferdinand's lack of quality. Until Phil Jones and/or Jonny Evans is restored to the line-up, it looks like things will continue to be rough for David Moyes in his first season at Old Trafford.

Rio Ferdinand limped off the pitch against Swansea in Manchester United's FA Cup loss over the weekend and the defender will be missing for two weeks as a result of the knee issue.

Manchester United's defense took a blow in the form of the Ferdinand injury but at the same time will be bolstered by the availability of Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra for the Capital One Cup match against Sunderland on January 7th. Rio Ferdinand has been increasingly marginalized in the United defense this season which may turn out to be his last for the Red Devils. His brief absence is unlikely to make a major impact on David Moyes' line-up decisions.

Manchester United are hot on the trail of a £15 million move for Benfica center back Ezequiel Garay.

Manchester United have numbers at center back but a significant investment at the position would indicate a lack of confidence in the future of one or more of Nemanja Vidic, Jonny Evans, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones. With that quartet supplemented by the aging Rio Ferdinand a Garay acquisition would represent pushing one or more of the others back in the pecking orders.

The Guardian is reporting that Rio Ferdinand will sign a one year contract extension with Manchester United within the week.

With Phil Jones and Jonny Evans looking less than impressive in United's final match of the season this is a good move for United. As David Moyes takes the helm he will have a great combination of experience - Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic - and promising youth - Evans, Jones, and Smalling at the core of his defense.
