Mike Williamson returned from a loan spell to help out Newcastle United's injury problems and promptly injured his hamstring in training, making him a major doubt for Week 15.
If this does not sum up everything going wrong for the Magpies, nothing will. After losing Jamaal to injury in last week's loss, and seeing such a poor performance from starters Chancel Mbemba and Fabrico Coloccini, Newcastle recalled Williamson from his loan with Wolves. Word on the street was that his return wasn't merely to replace Lascelles for bench depth, but to become a starter straight away as Steve McClaren is looking to fix a broken defense. Now it appears the Mbemba/Coloccini partnership will remain this week out of necessity, which should have owners of Liverpool attacking players salivating right now. Thu, Dec 3, 2015 11:04:00 PM

Newcastle United recalled Mike Williamson from a loan spell with Wolverhampton Wanderers following a recent injury to center back Jamaal Lascelles, but Williamson may be returning to provide more than just a bench option.

Given the complete trainwreck of a defense Newcastle have fielded over the past couple of weeks, Williamson may be returning to do more than warm a seat on the bench. The Fabricio Coloccini/Chancel Mbemba partnership has deteriorated lately and one may likely be under threat with the veteran's return. The better bet would be for the young Mbemba but the Coloccini era, in which he has worn the armband, may be coming to a close. That would really shake up the current atmosphere on Tyneside and may be McClaren's last roll of the dice to turn things around as he is considered on the cusp of losing his position with the club.

Newcastle United have sent veteran central defender Mike Williamson to Wolverhampton Wanderers on a one-month emergency loan.

Williamson hadn't played a minute for Newcastle so far this season in league action, and with the Chancel Mbemba/Fabricio Coloccini partnership at center back firmly in place, was unlikely to feature anytime soon. He will probably appreciate the opportunity to get some pitch time and may be able to help Wolves climb the table a bit from their current 14th position in the Championship.

Mike Williamson has issued a public apology to his Newcastle teammates and the club’s supporters but notably there was no mention of John Carver following the defenders sending-off at Leicester City.

Williamson took the unusual step of going public in response to the managers post-match comments at the King Power on Saturday after another demoralising – their seventh consecutive – defeat in the Premier League. Carver confirmed that the pair had exchanged words during the half-time interval and the interim boss insinuated that Williamson had gotten himself sent-off deliberately as his rash challenge on Jamie Vardy happened while both the ball and player were off the pitch. Williamson has refuted those claims but regardless the defender will serve a 2-game ban and may not be seen again in a black and white shirt. Daryl Janmaat is another definite absentee for the West Brom match [suspension]; skipper Fabricio Coloccini will be assessed after picking up a minor problem late in the game.

Newcastle boss John Carver accused his players of intentionally fouling in order to receive red cards.

Carver believes his players were sent off on purpose as they wanted to be suspended in order to avoid the pressure of the relegation battle. This is quite a strong accusation, and the dressing room will surely be in turmoil as the manager has started blaming the players in the midst of a huge slide. Newcastle have looked horrific as of late and it's hard to imagine how any players would stand behind the manager now that he's started publicly blaming them. Mike Williamson will serve a three-match ban in the meantime. Continue using Newcastle opponents in fantasy on a weekly basis.

Mike Williamson remains a legitimate budget option as he faces virtually no competition to partner Fabricio Coloccini at center back for Newcastle United.

Williamson is one of the few defenders in the Yahoo game right now that can be had for below 6m, is nailed on at his position and is coming off a positive performance, 10 points against Hull last weekend. He won't offer many points in all likelihood if the Magpies do not collect clean sheets and they are up against a Stoke side who look difficult to keep out right now. Still, for those who believe, he's several million less to own than other options on the team.

Mike Williamson earned a second yellow card late on for Newcastle United but it did not help Aston Villa find a goal in a sloppy 0-0 draw.

It was a tough break for Williamson, as his first yellow in the 86th minute was very soft and seemingly given to "even out" things as the Magpies had not received a single yellow up to that point while Villa were already on four. It made no difference, as Villa were positively inept in the final third. Newcastle were equally poor in their attacking, but they did come close as Siem De Jong, making his debut as a substitute, had a terrific chance but was denied by Brad Guzan. Newcastle have a nice run of fixtures on tap, however their attacking players have done little to give fantasy managers confidence and the success of their defense today had more to do with Aston Villa's poor display.

Malky MacKay has managed Mike Williamson in the past and is reported to be interested in renewing the relationship as Cardiff begin life in the Premier League.

Williamson has seen his playing time at Newcastle decline in each of the past two seasons despite being in the presumed prime of his career going from 27 to 29 years old. While he has never been exceptional he would be a nice affordable signing for a newly promoted team hoping to stay up but not blow the budget in doing so.
