Ciaran Clark is targeting a return in pre-season after injury ruled the defender out of Newcastle’s final three games.
The 26-year-old has found himself of the peripherals of the first-team team after picking up a knee injury at Crystal Palace in early February. The setback coincided with the return to fitness of Florian Lejeune, who came in to partner captain Jamaal Lascelles, and Rafa Benitez never deviated from the defensive pairing for the remainder of the campaign. Earlier this month, Republic of Ireland manager Martin O’Neill confirmed that Clark would miss the upcoming friendly internationals versus France and the United States due to injury. "I had an injection a couple of weeks ago in my knee," Clark told "Coming towards the end of the season, I'd been trying to train and doing a little bit outside, but it'd not been quite right, so we took the view that we'd leave it for a couple of weeks. Hopefully by pre-season it'll be back to normal and I'll be ready to go again for next season." May 23 - 8:17 AM

Rafa Benitez is cautiously optimistic that the injury suffered by Ciaran Clark on Sunday is not serious.

Newcastle earned a hard-fought draw at Selhurst Park with a back to wall second half performance to keep the Geordies one-point above the drop zone. Having deservedly gone in at the break a goal up, thanks to a neat Mo Diame finish and some slack Palace defending, the Eagles started the second half with a real statement of intent and were it not for some resolute defending the home side could’ve easily won. The Palace waves of attack kept coming and in the 89th minute Wilfried Zaha checked – putting it on a plate for Christian Benteke – but from nowhere Clark came across to block his effort which left the centre-back requiring treatment. "He took a blow to the knee, but I think it's too early for me to say. We have to wait and see, but I don't see it as a big issue," revealed Benitez. Newcastle face Manchester United at St James’ Park in GW27.

The Ireland national team is coming into full fitness at just the right time with James McCarthy and Ciaran Clark back.

The Everton standout midfielder has yet to train with the Irish squad after suffering a thigh injury at the end of the Premier League season. Meanwhile, Clark missed the team's friendly draw with the Netherlands on Friday due to an Achilles injury, but participated in light training on Saturday ahead of Tuesday's friendly against Belarus. While McCarthy is set to return to training on Monday, coach Martin O'Neill said he will likely not be involved in the friendly, but has done enough to be in the 23-man final squad for the European championships this summer.

Aston Villa will face a battle to keep hold of defender Ciaran Clark with West Brom manager Tony Pulis keen to seal a summer move.

West Brom reportedly made a bid last summer to prise Clark away from Aston Villa, but the Irishman signed a five-year contract to remain at Villa Park. However, with Aston Villa relegated, Pulis is expected to make another bid to trigger the 26-year-old's £5 million release clause after locking down Gareth McAuley and Jonas Olsson to a pair of one-year contracts. The "Express and Star" also reports the Baggies could make a move for versatile Newcastle defender Paul Dummett after the Magpies' relegation.

Eric Black could be forced into a change of formation with Ciaran Clark and Alan Hutton doubtful for the final game of the season at Arsenal.

Villa earned a credible 0-0 draw with Newcastle in game week thirty-seven with Clark lining up in a back three and Hutton playing in a five man midfield. However, during Fridays’ pre-match briefing, the caretaker boss confirmed that both are struggling due to ankle and calf injuries respectively. Aly Cissokho could return at left-back with Micah Richards partnering Lescott in a 4-4-2 with youngster Kevin Toner retaining his place in the starting XI. Rudy Gestede is back in contention following his return to training but Kieran Richardson and Jordan Veretout are expected to miss out after weeks on the sidelines.

Ciaran Clark has returned to light training and Eric Black is confident the defender will be available for the visit of AFC Bournemouth this weekend.

Clark picked up a calf injury while on international duty and missed the embarrassing home defeat to Chelsea. However, caretaker boss Black revealed the 26-year-old should re-join the group later this week. With Alan Hutton suspended, Clark could partner Joleon Lescott centrally with Micah Richards moving across onto the right - Jores Okore is another option should Clark fail to recover in time. Jack Grealish and Adama Traore continue to step up their recovery from respective ankle and foot injuries by playing for the Under-21s on Monday. Grealish impressed in his 30 minute cameo last Saturday while Traore missed out due to a lack of fitness.

Ciaran Clark will miss GW15 with a suspension after accumulating five yellow cards.

Clark has been starting for Aston Villa this year but will be missed this week. The team is also dealing with an injury to Micah Richards, so Jores Okore is almost slated to start this one. Aston Villa's defense has been extremely bad and it is difficult to find good plays in this one. Avoid them for now.

Aston Villa boss Remi Garde is considering changes in the back next week after allowing seven goals in the past two matches.

Aston Villa allowed three goals to an extremely defensive Watford side this past weekend and Garde is thinking about making changes in the back. If we had to take a guess, it would be Ciaran Clark or Alan Hutton to make way for someone next week. The top choices to come into the squad are probably Jores Okore, who recently recovered from injury, and Leandro Bacuna.

Ciaran Clark is probable for week 10.

Clark has missed a few weeks with injury but is expected to return this weekend. He isn't likely to start and can be safely left on your fantasy bench or waiver wire. Aston Villa are in the bottom three and there isn't much fantasy value in their team.

Ciaran Clark missed the home defeat to Stoke on Saturday after picking up a thigh strain in training.

Villa lost their sixth game of the campaign as the pressure on Tim Sherwood begins to mount. The Villians had opted for a slight change of formation as Jose Crespo came into a back three partnering Micah Richards and Joleon Lescot. A role which arguably would’ve been filled by Clark had he been available. However it was the same old story for Villa who struggled to break down a resolute side well drilled by Mark Hughes. Post-match Sherwood was not a happy man "It was not good enough. The situation is getting worse," and alluded to a "mini pre-season," in order to get his players "fit enough to play the way I want them to play." Clark, along with Gabby Agbonlahor are hoping to return for the trip to Swansea in game week nine.

Ciaran Clark has signed a new five-year deal with Aston Villa, which has him booked at the club until 2020.

Clark was by far Aston Villa's best defender last season and showed huge steps of improvement at age 24. He is considered as the future of that defense and Tim Sherwood seems to like him. New center-back signing Micah Richards was named team-captain earlier this summer, but we don't think Clark is at any risk of being a rotation casualty. Clark is an Aston Villa academy graduate and tweeted his excitement to remain at Aston Villa. Expect him to have a stellar season again.

Aston Villa will reportedly offer Ciaran Clark a contract extension after a fantastic season by the defender.

Clark was Villa's best defender this season and has impressed Tim Sherwood as well as fans. It seems Sherwood wants to commit to the defender and offer him a contract extension that extends his time at the club. He is currently on a deal that ends next summer, and teams are already after him. Aston Villa would be wise to sign him on a longer deal, as they can only benefit from having him on the books, either as a way to make money in a sale or as a solid piece they can build around.

Ciaran Clark was the best Aston Villa defender this season despite a late injury that ruled him out for the last seven matches.

Clark featured in 29 matches after initially being plugged in for injury relief, but the 25 year old was impressive all year. His biggest knock would be his bookings, 10 of them, including a red card. Outside of his tendency to foul, Clark was impressive and registered 24 blocked shots and 47 passes intercepted. He wasn't a fantasy stud by any means, finishing with 141 Yahoo! points. He goes into next season as a starter but he's a late round fantasy pick at best.

Ciaran Clark is almost certain to miss next weekends’ FA Cup semi-final after suffering a knee injury during Saturdays’ win at White Hart Lane.

Clark lasted just 18 minutes before a medial knee ligament injury ended his day and the defender will now be assessed with his season hanging in the balance. Nathan Baker is the man most likely to come in having returned to fitness but Jores Okore is another option from the bench while Philippe Senderos and Aly Cissokho are medically fine but lacking fitness. Gabby Agbonlahor is another injury doubt for Wembley due to a hamstring complaint - scan on Monday - but Carlos Sanchez is definitely out following his sending off for two cautionable offences. The Colombian midfielder will resume his domestic duties at Manchester City in GW34.

Aston Villa's players continue to struggle in both real life and fantasy.

This was a horrific week for Aston Villa. They lost yet another match, this time to Newcastle, and their players couldn't produce any fantasy worthy stats. The best scorer of the week for them was Ciaran Clark, who came out with eight fantasy points, but there isn't a single player we would recommend owning in the Yahoo! game in the coming weeks. There is just too much inconsistency and lack of upside.
