Newcastle United found themselves down by two goals but managed to claw their way back and scrape a 2-2 draw against Liverpool.
The Magpies deserve credit for maintaining their focus after giving up a very early goal, then finding themselves down by two by the opening half hour. Georginio Wijnaldum began the day on the bench for a second straight match, but it was his inclusion to begin the second half that seemed to help turn the tide. Three minutes into the second frame, Vurnon Anita delivered a long cross to the back post and Papiss Cisse headed home to pull one back. They would then find an equalizer in the 65th minute when an Andros Townsend cross into the area was not cleared and Jack Colback's shot took a deflection to fool Simon Mignolet. While the comeback was admirable and Newcastle have done well to find points in their last three games, they need to start winning as they are still a point behind Sunderland and the Black Cats now have two games in hand. Newcastle's personnel woes have gone from bad to worse after Jack Colback picked up his 10th yellow card of the season.

The Magpies put together a valiant effort to climb back from a 1-0 deficit against rival Sunderland in a massive relegation scrap over the weekend, but Colback's booking put a damper on the weekend. The midfielder has already missed time this season due to various injuries, but will now miss the club's upcoming matches against Norwich City and Southampton. Colback has started at left-back in the last two matches following injuries to Paul Dummett and Massadio Haidara, but now it looks as though Vurnon Anita will have to fill in at the position.

Despite a valiant effort in front of Rafa Benitez, Newcastle could not get past Leicester City at the King Power Stadium in a 1-0 loss.

The Magpies missed the chance to escape from the relegation zone and continue to sit one point behind rival Sunderland ahead of this weekend's upcoming Tyne-Wear derby. But the visitors looked inspired in their first match under the instruction of Benitez, who signed a three-year contract on Friday after the club dismissed Steve McClaren after less than one season at the club. Without Paul Dummett, Massadio Haidara and Fabricio Coloccini, Benitez elected to go with Jack Colback at left-back as the midfielder had one of the club's better chances. In all, Newcastle had more shots on goal than the league leaders, who were efficient with a goal from their only shot on target.

Jack Colback has been training all week according to Steve McClaren and is available for selection when Newcastle United travel this weekend to take on Chelsea.

McClaren announced that Emmanuel Riviere is available as well, but the French striker is far behind the pecking order at Newcastle with Aleksandar Mitrovic, Seydou Doumbia and Ayoze Perez all ahead of him, though Perez can play elsewhere. The boost comes from Colback's return. While normally deployed in central defensive midfield, he may line up at left back, where he has experience. Rolando Aarons was the latest emergency fill-in at the position and to be fair the Magpies kept a clean sheet in the process. But that was West Brom without a true striker and this is Chelsea up next, so expect Colback to find himself in the back four this weekend.

Steve McClaren is hoping to bolster his Newcastle squad on Wednesday when the Magpies travel to Goodison Park with a number of players closing in on a return to full fitness.

Paul Dummett has been training with the group for the last three-four days while Jack Colback is said to be: "Very, very close," after a hamstring injury ruled the 26-year-old out of the defeat at Vicarage Road in game week twenty-three. Siem de Jong and Kevin Mbabu also have a chance of making the squad. Steven Taylor has been working on his fitness following hamstring surgery and will have benefited from the additional time. The defender was included on the bench at Watford after one week of training as Newcastle faced the Hornets with only four fully defenders.

Newcastle United have another injury blow to contend with as Jack Colback looks set to miss out the Week 23 match against Watford.

Colback was set to fill in for Paul Dummett at left back, where he has deputized in the past, but now Steve McClaren is completely out of options with any experience as Massadio Haidara and Kevin Mbabu are also unavailable. This leaves Newcastle with only one option - to play center back Jamaal Lascelles on the left of the back four. This could be a good week for a chance on the likes of Troy Deeney and Odion Ighalo in fantasy. Both have been quiet in recent weeks but Newcastle have been pretty bad defensively on the road and the back four they look to field can spark the Hornets.

Steve McClaren indicated that Jack Colback was in training today, signaling a strong chance the midfielder will be available when Newcastle United host Manchester United Tuesday evening.

Colback picked up a knock that McClaren didn't want to risk aggravating for the Magpies FA Cup match with Watford over the weekend, which Newcastle lost 1-0 at Vicarage Road. Colback has shown to be very sturdy when it comes to injuries though. The knee injury that he sustained earlier in the season looked to have him sidelined for multiple months at first, but when the timetable shrunk to six weeks, he even beat that estimate. He is Newcastle's best presence in defensive midfield so his inclusion against the Red Devils will be key for a positive result.

Jack Colback has made a quicker-than-expected return to fitness as Steve McClaren has indicated the defensive midfielder will be included in Newcastle United's squad this weekend.

Encouraging news for the Magpies who have had a revolving door of injury problems yet again this season. There was fear when Colback first went down in late October that he would miss out the rest of the campaign, but there has been nothing but positive news since. With Cheik Tiote out of action, Colback's return could not come at a better time as Newcastle travel to Selhurst Park tomorrow.

After initial fears had Jack Colback ruled out for perhaps the entire season, positive news has emerged that the key central midfielder will only miss up to six weeks with his knee injury.

As bad as things went for the Magpies in the Tyne-Wear derby, they at least have had two positive changes during the week - their captain Fabricio Coloccini successfully appealed his red card and will be back in the XI tomorrow, while Colback's injury has been determined to not be as serious as originally thought. Expect the double pivot position to be shared by Vurnon Anita and card magnet Cheik Tiote when Newcastle line up against Stoke City tomorrow.

Jack Colback could be set for an extended period on the side-lines after the Newcastle midfielder was pictured leaving the Stadium of Light on crutches with his right knee in a brace.

Colback was on the receiving end of a strong Lee Cattermole tackle early in the second half of Sundays' Wear-Tyne derby and immediately signalled to the bench. The 26-year-old will have a scan to determine the extent of the problem but regardless Colback will definitely miss the visit of Stoke City this weekend after accumulating 5-yellows which automatically triggers a one game ban. His absence could earn Vurnon Anita a recall. The Dutchman has found himself frozen out of the starting eleven following the recent return of Cheick Tiote.

Just moments after the start of the second half of the Tyneside derby, Jack Colback went down in a heap and had to exit, the third player in the match to leave with injury.

Newcastle are up against now, down a goal, down their captain, down to ten men, and now without Colback after a crunching tackle by Lee Cattermole. After a few minutes laid out on the pitch, he was taken out and replaced by Vurnon Anita.

Steve McClaren could not say one way or another during his press conference today if Jack Colback will be fit enough to make the squad facing Manchester City tomorrow.

Colback was removed during last weekend's draw with Chelsea on 53 minutes, seemingly aggravating the knock he picked up the week prior. Steve McClaren is aware Colback's inclusion gives the Magpies their best chance at a positive result against heavily favored City, but he also needs to consider their are 30 weeks to go after this one, and he needs Colback to not miss further time with re-aggravation. Those who have Colback should make other plans this week. Cheick Tiote can take up a holding midfield spot if needed, as he has returned to fitness.

Jack Colback aggravated a knock in Newcastle United's draw with Chelsea over the weekend and is now a "major concern" for the coming weekend's match against Manchester City.

Perhaps Colback needed to sit out the Chelsea match or be available from the bench, but the Magpies have so many injury concerns ahead of Week 7, Steve McClaren may have felt the need to push the defensive midfielder a bit in order to achieve a positive result. It may come as no surprise that Newcastle had a 2-0 edge against the Blues while Colback was on the pitch, then subsequently conceded twice after Colback was taken off. Not may would back them to do anything but lose to Manchester City this weekend but, if Colback cannot go, it looks a monumental task indeed.

Jack Colback is putting in quality shifts, covering the third most ground per match in the early going, but his fantasy output has not shown up yet.

James Milner owns the distinction for being the top "engine" in the league thus far, covering 12.29 km/match, and Christian Eriksen slots in second, though he has missed two of the first four games. Next in line is Colback, who has played every minute and is averaging over 12 km/match himself. Unfortunately for fantasy owners, he has yet to get in on any attacking points and his pace is down from last year in terms of stuffing the defensive categories. The Magpies have many new faces in the first team and perhaps the current chemistry has sapped some of Colback's fantasy value, but odds are he will gradually lift his numbers over time and get them looking closer to last year's averages.

Jack Colback scored but Newcastle's slump continued as Spurs beat the Magpies 3-1 at St. James' Park.

St. James' Park has become one of the less intimidating grounds in the Premier League over the second half of the season. John Carver's side has lost six straight since the end of February and looked bad doing it. Jack Colback contributed a goal that briefly drew Newcastle even but Christen Eriksen and Harry Kane scored as Spurs dominated possession on the road.
