Brighton centre-back Shane Duffy is surprisingly in with a chance of playing for his club against West Ham on Friday night.
Duffy limped off towards the end of The Seagulls' 1-1 draw with Everton on Sunday with a groin complaint. There were fears that the Republic of Ireland defender could miss a number of weeks with the injury. However, Chris Hughton gave a very positive update on Duffy's progress in his pre-match press conference on Thursday: "At the moment we think he'll be okay. He hasn't trained. We're hoping he'll train this morning." If Duffy comes through that session you can expect him to start against the Hammers. Oct 19 - 6:42 AM

Brighton centre-back Shane Duffy will head for a scan on Monday after limping off during Sundays 1-1 draw with Everton.

The Republic of Ireland international had played in every Premier League minute of the season to date, but was forced off at the AMEX Stadium following a challenge with Oumar Niasse in which Duffy landed awkwardly: "I’m all right, a bit sore at the minute. I’ll get scanned in the morning and see how it is but it feels not too bad. It was like a pop or a shot feeling but it [groin] has calmed down now. I’ve iced it and had treatment and it feels a little bit better but I’ll see tomorrow." The Seagulls travel to West Ham in game week 9, and should further tests rule the defender out, then Chris Hughton may call upon the services of Uwe Hünemeier who has been restricted to just two starts this term – both in the Carabao Cup – and only 17 minutes of league action.

Brighton and Republic or Ireland defender Shane Duffy has signed a new contract with the club.

Duffy has signed a four year deal which will keep him at the AMEX until 2021. Duffy signed for Brighton for a club record £4 million fee from Blackburn Rovers, going on to partner club stalwart Lewis Dunk in the heart of the promotion winning defence.

Blackburn Rovers have signed Republic of Ireland international defender Shane Duffy from Premier League Everton for an undisclosed fee.

Duffy was tipped for big things at Everton, but he has never been able to break in to the first team and spent all of last season on loan at Yeovil. The emergence last season of John Stones means Roberto Martinez has now allowed Duffy to move to Blackburn on a permanent deal, with the defender signing a three year contract at Ewood Park.
