Ashley Westwood has been signed by Burnley from Aston Villa on a three-and-a-half year deal with an option to extend the contract an additional year.
It comes as something of a surprise that the Clarets were the Premier League's biggest spenders on deadline day, bringing in Robbie Brady along with Westwood. Westwood is a central midfielder who showed some very positive growth last season on an otherwise dismal Aston Villa side and his arrival will fill the void left by Dean Marney, whose season ended with ligament damage in his knee. With Joey Barton coming back this winter and the signings of Jeff Hendrick and Steven Defour, Sean Dyche has a nice problem of several options to choose from in central midfield. The depth should also increase the manager's willingness to field a lone striker at times rather than his usual 4-4-2 look. Westwood might have fantasy value in some formats but only if he nails down a regular starting gig, which is not guaranteed at this time. Thu, Feb 2, 2017 05:17:00 AM

Aston Villa's first game of its Premier League farewell tour fell right in line with the path of its season, clearly outplayed and overwhelmed, in a 4-2 loss to Southampton.

The loss is Villa's 10th Premier League defeat in a row, although the two-goal output was the club's best since its last win: a 2-0 victory against Norwich City on February 6. The only bright spot was Ashley Westwood scoring his first goals of the season, only his fourth and fifth of his Premier League career. The central midfielder found himself in the right spot on two occasions, capitalizing on a scramble in the box just before half-time while putting pressure on Saints with five minutes left to cut the lead to one from nearly the same spot in the box.

Ashley Westwood has emerged as an early for the visit of Manchester City this weekend after a head injury forced the Villa midfielder off midway through the first half of Mondays’ game at White Hart Lane.

Westwood was visibly dazed after he was caught by Mousa Dembele. The Tottenham player was looking to protect the ball as Westwood challenged from behind and caught the 25-year-old flush on the head with his elbow. After several minutes, Westwood was led from the field of play as a precaution with suspected mild concussion and blurred vision. Caretaker manager Kevin MacDonald also confirmed that Gabby Agbonlahor is almost certain to miss Remi Garde’s first game in charge. The speedy attacker was forced off during the break because of a persistent calf problem which has hampered his involvement for the past 6-7 weeks.

Ashley Westwood has signed a new five-year deal at the club.

Westwood has committed his future to Aston Villa and is excited to continue his time at the club. Despite the trust of confidence from Villa, Westwood is not a great fantasy option. He has only three goals and ten assists in 93 matches for the club and it's hard to justify owning him in formats that don't reward points for defensive stats such as tackles and passes intercepted.

Ashley Westwood will miss gameweek 32 with a hamstring injury.

Westwood has not been good under Tim Sherwood and is droppable in all leagues at this time regardless of injury status. He doesn't seem like he'll be a fantasy option for the rest of the season and managers should part ways as soon as possible. There is no word on how long he'll miss due to the injury.

Ashley Westwood was stretchered off towards the end of the first half with a left leg injury

Jamie Vardy - who received a yellow card for the incident - went in rather hard, forcing the midfielder's left knee to turn somewhat awkwardly. Westwood went straight to the locker room and was replaced soon after by Kieran Richardson.

Aston Villa have signed young midfielder Anes Omerovic to join their youth academy.

Omerovic comes from Austrian side AKA Vorarlberg. The 15 year-old is a developmental prospect who will compete in Villa's youth set up before trying to make an impact in the Premier League. Aston Villa are currently struggling in the financial department so they are forced to make moves for developmental prospects such as this one instead of proven talent. Omerovic will not be a fantasy options for at least a few years.

A superb goal from a free kick gave Aston Villa the early advantage, but it would all go downhill from there for the Lions, as they would fall to Manchester United, 4-1.

It looked like another disorganized back line for the Red Devils early, and a foul from Raphael gave Villa a free kick chance which they converted thanks to Westwood, who got it up and over the wall and past David de Gea. United would begin to control the game from then on but Villa still had opportunities to make a game of it, including a pair of crucial misses by Christian Benteke in the second half. The Lions will attempt to bounce back with a kinder fixture next week as they host lowly Fulham.

Ashley Westwood has been declared fit to face Norwich on Sunday.

Westwood has been dealing with a knock but the Villa midfielder will be fine for Sunday. Paul Lambert recently praised him for being an important part of the VIlla squad and even went as far to say his injury changed the match outcome against Newcastle. Westwood brings enough defensive stats to be a decently consistent fantasy option, but don't expect double-digit returns.

Ashley Westwood believes Aston Villa need to cut out their careless mistakes in an attempt to rebound from their current poor form.

Villa have only earned one point from their last four games and are close to entering the relegation battle. Westwood believes the reason for the slump is careless mistakes. The young midfielder was played decently this year and has averaged almost six fantasy points per game over his last nine games. At a reasonable price of £ 10.54M, he can be a decent fantasy option.

Ashley Westwood will miss Aston Villa's game against Crystal Palace on Thursday after picking up his fifth booking of the season today.

Westwood has lost the support of VIlla fans for his lack of goals and assists this season but he's been fairly solid in the middle and does a lot of the dirty work. There are many options on the VIlla bench to replace him so it would be risky to try and predict his replacement next week.

Former Aston Villa captain Stiliyan Petrov praised Ashley Westwood and the work he's been doing for Aston Villa this season.

Petrov mentioned that Westwood does the dirty work for Villa and that can sometimes go unnoticed. The words are true as Westwood has been an important part of Villa's squad despite his efforts not showing up on the stats sheet. Enjoy Westwood's contributions on the pitch but don't rely on him as a constant fantasy contributor.

Aston Villa found themselves down by two goals only eleven minutes in to their match at the Hawthorns but kept their composure and eventually mounted a second half rally, capped off with a goal from Ashley Westwood, and the match ended in a 2-2 draw.

The Villa comeback seemed almost inevitable after West Brom was tasked with holding their "comfortable" lead for about 80 minutes. Once Villa broke through with the opening goal from Karim El Ahmadi, it was only a matter of how Villa would level the game. The magic moment came in the 76th minute, after a poor headed clearance landed in the path of Westwood, who took one stride toward goal and hit a low screamer past the Boaz Myhill's left. While the game was a thriller in reality, there was little impact in fantasy.

Ashley Westwood believes he's underperforming this season and needs to improve to get back to his form from last year.

Westwood had a fantastic campaign last year but injuries and fitness have frustrated him this time around. He's shown he can be a really effective player in the middle for Aston Villa and should be expected to bounce back sooner rather than later.

Aston Villa are interested in Japanese midfielder Hiroshi Kiyotake, who is valued at £10m.

Kiyotake's club, Nuremburg, might be valuing the player a little too high. The Japanese star is certainly a good player, but for £10m, Aston Villa might be able to find a better option. Villa are ready to offer £7.5m but that's likely going to be too low for Nuremburg.
