Antonio Valencia has successfully undergone foot surgery and the Ecuador international is expected to miss the up-to five months.
Valencia picked up an unspecified foot issue during the first half of last months’ Manchester derby but carried on playing until the 81st minute, a decision which is now believed to have exacerbated the problem. Specific details of the foot complaint – and procedure - are still unknown but the 30-year-old could be ruled out until at least April, 2016. Having already lost Luke Shaw – double leg fracture – Louis van Gaal may be forced into the transfer market during the January window with limited options at left-back. Summer acquisition Matteo Darmian will provide cover while Ashley Young is another option but with the United well placed in the Premier League and having already progressed to the next phase of the Champions League, the Dutchman may look for reinforcements. Antonio Valencia is a question mark for the visit of West Bromwich Albion on Saturday as he continues to recover from a foot injury.

With Matteo Darmian out suspended, Valencia would have a clear path to the starting job at right back if he were healthy. If he can't recover from his foot injury in time to start on Saturday then Louis Van Gaal will likely be forced to play a makeshift line-up. For the match with CSKA Moscow in mid-week Van Gaal went with Marcos Rojo, Daley Blind, Chris Smalling, and Ashley Young and those players are all available again with Phil Jones as a possibility as well.

Antonio Valencia will miss his second consecutive match for Manchester United after leaving the Manchester Derby injured.

Presumably the logic in bringing Valencia into the starting line-up for the derby was to use his speed to counter that of Raheem Sterling of Manchester City. The strategy worked to at least some extent as United held Sterling and City without a goal. With a bunch of fast and powerful wings featuring for Crystal Palace this weekend, Valencia might have earned a second start but it won't happen as his foot injury will cause him to miss out. Matteo Darmian will return to the starting eleven and United will have to hope he can keep up with the pace of Bolasie, Zaha and Sako.

Antonio Valencia was injured late in the Manchester Derby and is doubtful for the League Cup match with Middlesbrough on Wednesday.

Valencia made a rare start for Louis Van Gaal on Sunday as the Dutch manager looked to counter Raheem Sterling's speed. It went well in that United held City scoreless for the match. The downside is that Valencia was injured toward the end of the match. His status is doubtful for the mid-week League Cup match and not much has been said about his likely status for Saturday when United face more speedy wingers when they travel to Selhurst Park to face Yannick Bolasie, Bacary Sako, Wilfried Zaha and company.

Louis van Gaal made one change from the side which won at Goodison Park in game week nine as Antonio Valencia replaced Matteo Darmian to help combat the pace of Raheem Sterling during Sundays’ Manchester derby.

Valencia was the preferred right-back in the recent Champions League tie in Moscow but while many expected a return for Darmian, Van Gaal had other ideas. The Dutchman opted for the quicker, more versatile Valencia despite the 30-year-old not being an orthodox full-back as his summer acquisition seemingly slips down the pecking order. Darmian was given a torrid time by Alexis Sanchez [Emirates] before he was replaced at the break and although the Italian played at Everton [jet-lag kept Valencia out] a week later, he dropped back to the bench for the next two games. However, Darmian may get his chance in the Capital One cup after Valencia injured his foot midway through the first half of yesterdays’ game.

Antonio Valencia, questionable according to Louis Van Gaal's statement yesterday, was deemed fit enough to start against Wolfsburg on Wednesday.

Manchester United started a full strength side featuring De Gea, Darmian, Blind, Smalling, Valencia, Schneiderlin, Schweinsteiger, Mata, Rooney, Memphis and Martial in what appears to be LVG's preferred starting eleven (minus the left back spot). Valencia played down the right side of the defense and Matteo Darmian moved across the pitch to deputize for Shaw/Rojo. The news on Valencia is particularly good given the trip to Arsenal on Sunday.

Manchester United and Matteo Darmian have reportedly agreed on the terms of a four-year contract for the Italian international to join the club from Torino.

Torino and the Red Devils have reportedly already agreed on a transfer fee for the right back with an initial fee of £12.7million potentially rising to £14.4million with incentives widely reported. With all parties now (reportedly) in agreement on the terms of the deal it appears that Manchester United have their new starting right back. The dotting of i's and the crossing of t's and a medical are all that stands between this one and the finish line. Don't expect TOO much from Darmian from a fantasy point of view. His record shows him to be a defensive-minded defender which may be a good thing in the real world but fantasy games generally don't love that sort of player even if they're as good as Cesar Azpilicueta was last season.

Manchester United look to have agreed a deal to take Italian full-back Matteo Darmain to Old Trafford for a fee believed to be in the region of $22 million.

United moved quickly to get their man following interest from Napoli and Roma and providing personal terms can be sorted quickly Darmain may be added to the squad in time for their US tour. Louis van Gaal highlighted his right hand side as a potential weak area and Darmain arrives having established himself as a talent both domestically and on the international stage. He becomes the second major signing of the window joining Memphis Depay but the spending won’t end there. Van Gaal is hoping to conclude a deal for Valencia defender Nicholas Otamendi while the future of Sergio Ramos at Real Madrid is still in doubt. However another target Mats Hummels says he is "honoured" by the interest shown from Manchester United but revealed he will remain at Borussia Dortmund for another year.

Antonio Valencia took to social media to confirm the success of an unspecified surgical procedure with the Manchester United full-back now facing a race against time to feature in the upcoming Copa America tournament.

Valencia went under the knife on Monday less than 24 hours after the final whistle at the KC Stadium but whether the operation was planned to ensure his availability for Ecuador in June or to safeguard pre-season fitness remains to be seen. Ashley Young is another United player set for surgery after Roy Hodgson revealed the winger would not be fit for the end of season internationals against the Republic of Ireland and Slovenia; again due to an unspecified procedure. Louis van Gaal confirmed that Angel di Maria made the decision to come off against Hull during the final game due to hamstring tightness, although the problem does not look to be "heavy" the player will have a precautionary scan.

Antonio Valencia joins a host of returning United players who have been declared fit ahead of their critical Week 21 match with Southampton.

Like Rafael, Antonio Valencia has been injured and was uncertain heading into the week. Like Rafael, Valencia looks like he has been passed fit and should be ready to start or play a role off the bench for Louis Van Gaal on Sunday against the Saints. While neither appears to be an LVG favorite, Valencia has been the better performer over the course of the season and would appear to be a slight favorite for the starting nod this weekend.

Antonio Valencia faces a late fitness check ahead of the New Years Day match with Stoke City after a groin strain saw him leave early against Spurs.

With Louis Van Gaal announcing that Rafael (along with Chris Smalling and Luke Shaw) "lack match rhythm", he will probably be hoping that Valencia is fit to start against Stoke City on Thursday. Rafael looked out of sorts deputizing for Valencia on Sunday and United will want to avoid dropping more points at the Britannia after a close call against the Potters at Old Trafford in the first half of the season.

Antonio Valencia put in a solid effort as a late replacement for Rafael in the Manchester derby loss to neighbors City.

Antonio Valencia may not have been an intentional starter but he certainly contributed with six interceptions and three tackles in the 1-0 loss to Manchester City. While the goal came from the side of the attack that Valencia was responsible for, it didn't appear to be a specific failure on his part that allowed Gael Clichy to get to the by-line to center to Sergio Aguero for the winning goal.

Antonio Valencia showed that he is up to the task of being a right wing back with a strong all-around performance in Week 2 for Manchester United.

One of only two United players in double digits in fantasy in Week 2, Mata was the other, Antonio Valencia had a strong match when it came to the "phantom points" that the Yahoo format gives out. Named a Joel Ward All-Star by the Rotoworld.com Monday Morning Manager for Week 2 for his combination of blocked shots (1), tackles won (6) and passes intercepted (3) this is the sort of performance that can be repeated because it wasn't driven by goals, assists or clean sheets which are harder to predict.

It has been mostly Arturo Vidal and Thomas Vermaelen rumors at Manchester United recently but today brings news that the club may be poised to make a significant offer for Fiorentina wing back Juan Cuadrado.

It seems likely that Louis Van Gaal will want to play a 3-5-2 with wing back-type midfielder/defenders at least some of the time now that he's taken over at Manchester United. While Antonio Valencia is reasonably well suited to play such a role on the right, the common wisdom is that Juan Cuadrado would be a significant upgrade. Linked with a move to Barcelona for most of the summer, Manchester United appear poised to pounce while Barca struggle to offload spare parts like Alex Song to raise money for the deal. This would be a great move for United if it comes through.

Antonio Valencia could see his fortunes - and fantasy value - improve significantly if Louis Van Gaal decides to go with a 3-5-2 system after seeing what his current squad has to offer.

Van Gaal was famously praised for his tactical flexibility during Holland's World Cup run but Valencia's own ability to play defensively or in the midfield on the right could provide the new United boss with lots of options during a match without having to make a substitution. Valencia fits the "wingback" mold better than Rafael and has slotted into that role during pre-season. At 5.38 in the Yahoo game he's definitely one to watch even if he won't get defender points for clean sheets.
