Antonio Valencia joins a host of returning United players who have been declared fit ahead of their critical Week 21 match with Southampton.
Like Rafael, Antonio Valencia has been injured and was uncertain heading into the week. Like Rafael, Valencia looks like he has been passed fit and should be ready to start or play a role off the bench for Louis Van Gaal on Sunday against the Saints. While neither appears to be an LVG favorite, Valencia has been the better performer over the course of the season and would appear to be a slight favorite for the starting nod this weekend. Antonio Valencia faces a late fitness check ahead of the New Years Day match with Stoke City after a groin strain saw him leave early against Spurs.

With Louis Van Gaal announcing that Rafael (along with Chris Smalling and Luke Shaw) "lack match rhythm", he will probably be hoping that Valencia is fit to start against Stoke City on Thursday. Rafael looked out of sorts deputizing for Valencia on Sunday and United will want to avoid dropping more points at the Britannia after a close call against the Potters at Old Trafford in the first half of the season.

Antonio Valencia put in a solid effort as a late replacement for Rafael in the Manchester derby loss to neighbors City.

Antonio Valencia may not have been an intentional starter but he certainly contributed with six interceptions and three tackles in the 1-0 loss to Manchester City. While the goal came from the side of the attack that Valencia was responsible for, it didn't appear to be a specific failure on his part that allowed Gael Clichy to get to the by-line to center to Sergio Aguero for the winning goal.

Antonio Valencia showed that he is up to the task of being a right wing back with a strong all-around performance in Week 2 for Manchester United.

One of only two United players in double digits in fantasy in Week 2, Mata was the other, Antonio Valencia had a strong match when it came to the "phantom points" that the Yahoo format gives out. Named a Joel Ward All-Star by the Rotoworld.com Monday Morning Manager for Week 2 for his combination of blocked shots (1), tackles won (6) and passes intercepted (3) this is the sort of performance that can be repeated because it wasn't driven by goals, assists or clean sheets which are harder to predict.

It has been mostly Arturo Vidal and Thomas Vermaelen rumors at Manchester United recently but today brings news that the club may be poised to make a significant offer for Fiorentina wing back Juan Cuadrado.

It seems likely that Louis Van Gaal will want to play a 3-5-2 with wing back-type midfielder/defenders at least some of the time now that he's taken over at Manchester United. While Antonio Valencia is reasonably well suited to play such a role on the right, the common wisdom is that Juan Cuadrado would be a significant upgrade. Linked with a move to Barcelona for most of the summer, Manchester United appear poised to pounce while Barca struggle to offload spare parts like Alex Song to raise money for the deal. This would be a great move for United if it comes through.

Antonio Valencia could see his fortunes - and fantasy value - improve significantly if Louis Van Gaal decides to go with a 3-5-2 system after seeing what his current squad has to offer.

Van Gaal was famously praised for his tactical flexibility during Holland's World Cup run but Valencia's own ability to play defensively or in the midfield on the right could provide the new United boss with lots of options during a match without having to make a substitution. Valencia fits the "wingback" mold better than Rafael and has slotted into that role during pre-season. At 5.38 in the Yahoo game he's definitely one to watch even if he won't get defender points for clean sheets.

Antonio Valencia was sent off in Ecuador's 0-0 draw against France for a nasty challenge with his studs up.

Valencia has had an awful World Cup and finished it off with a red card. He's now received a red card in two of Ecuador's last four matches. The game ended 0-0 despite a lot of chances going both ways. Both goalkeepers were excellent and both teams' strikers missed a plethora of chances. France finish the group in first place with seven points and will face Nigeria in the round of 16. Ecuador finish third with four points and are eliminated.

Antonio Valencia leads Ecuador's team in a match they most likely have to win if they want to advance to the next round of the World Cup. Valencia has been quiet in the first two games but has the quality to provide the spark Ecuador need.

After coughing up the opening goal, Ecuador pounced quickly to equalize and would eventually grab a game winner, both courtesy of Enner Valencia, to sieze three vital points in a 1-2 final.

Premier League veteran Antonio Valencia once again stood in the shadow of his teammate with the same last name as Enner has been on absolute fire, bagging a brace and scoring now in his sixth consecutive match. Ecuador are now level with Switzerland on points with an advantage in the goal difference department. An Ecuador win against France or an Honduras win over Switzerland would see the South American side through.

Ecuador XI: Domínguez; Paredes, Guagua, Erazo, W. Ayoví; Noboa, Minda, A.Valencia, Montero; Caicedo, E.Valencia

Ecuador lost to a Swiss side who's defense had just been exposed by France while they take on an Honduras side that wasn't as thoroughly hammered by France. Translation, be wary of Honduras in this one despite Ecuador's "continental advantage". CONCACAF countries have represented quite well so far. Man United wide man Antonio Valencia starts as expected.

Ecuador scored the opening goal but the Swiss eventually wore them down as a certain draw turned to a loss in the final moments of a 2-1 loss.

The "other" Valencia, Enner, scored with a header in the 22nd minute to give yet another underdog at this tournament an advantage. Antonio wore the armband for his country and was serviceable but the Ecuadorians could not find that second goal. They came extremely close in the final minute of added time, but the threat left them exposed for the Swiss counter-attack that ultimately led to their demise.

Antonio Valencia scored Manchester United's first goal against Swansea and that turned out to be the winner as United avenged their recent cup loss to Swansea.

Antonio Valencia hasn't been up to his recent standards but he showed up in the right place at the right time to net a winner for David Moyes. Adnan Januzaj was probably United's best player between his exceptional passing and hitting the crossbar from a free kick in the early going but it was Valencia and then Welbeck who did the business as Manchester United returned to their traditional winning ways at Old Trafford against Swansea.
