Raheem Sterling’s stoppage-time winner in a 2-1 defeat by Manchester City denied Southampton a point on Wednesday.
Southampton came painfully close to becoming the first time to deny Manchester City a victory since August, and will believe they should of left the Etihad with a point. The Saints had the better of the chances in the opening 45 minutes, with Wesly Hoedt's header from a corner deflected onto the bar and Maya Yoshida later firing over off another set-piece. Fraser Forster was excellent in between the sticks, but could do nothing to keep out Kevin De Bruyne's deflected free kick just after the restart. The response came from Romeu, who returned to the starting XI after a one-match ban and fired in off the underside of the bar with 15 minutes remaining. It appeared Mauricio Pellegrino's side had done enough until Sterling curled home an unstoppable strike in the 96th minute. Wed, Nov 29, 2017 06:41:00 PM

Southampton will have Spanish defensive midfielder Oriol Romeu available for their match against Chelsea on Tuesday.

Romeu, 25, has been hugely important to Southampton's defensive strength this season in spite of losing Jose Fonte to West Ham and Virgil Van Dijk to injury. He has been very effective in controlling the space in front of the back four, making tackles and interceptions at a higher rate than any of his teammates. Romeu will presumably retake his place in the starting XI on Tuesday when the Saints visit Stamford Bridge after serving a two match suspension for accumulating ten yellow cards this season. His manager has lauded him in his pre-match press conference, comparing him to PL Player of the Season N'Golo Kanté: ""I think he’s not far off Kante," Puel said. "If we see the quality of his games since the beginning of the season, for me, he [Romeu] is not far off Kante because he’s very consistent and every game he gives good performances, with consistency and quality."

Southampton will have to do without influential defensive midfielder Oriol Romeu for their next two games after he was suspended for accumulating 10 cautions this term.

The Spaniard received the suspension automatically pursuant to Football Association rules for his tenth yellow card of the domestic campaign, which he earned in a foul on Wilfried Zaha with 20 minutes to go on Wednesday evening. He will miss the Saints' visit to the Hawthorns to face West Brom on Saturday as well as Man City's visit to St. Mary's on April 15. He is likely to be replaced in the side by Jordy Clasie.

Southampton's 25 year old defensive midfielder Oriol Romeu has signed a new four and a half year contract with the club.

The deal will keep Romeu at St Mary's until 2021. The Spaniard has been a stalwart for the Saints this term, playing all but one league game totalling 30 appearances in all. Southampton signed Romeu back in August 2015 from Chelsea for £5 million.

Southampton defensive midfielder Oriol Romeu has praised manager Claude Puel's management of the team. He claims his management is key to their success.

Puel made seven changes to the Saints side which had featured in the Europa league for last weekend's Leicester match. The game, which ended scoreless, was Southampton's sixth clean sheet on the trot. However, the manager rarely changes the style with which the team plays - this has suited the Spaniard. GW7's tie highlighted this. He made the most tackles and gained possession the most of everyone on the pitch. He also had the highest success rate of all in his duels on the pitch. The video which went around showing him blocking from Vardy, Slimani and Vardy again in quick succession did not exaggerate his importance to the side.

Oriol Romeu went off injured early and his absence worsened Southampton's issue at the base of midfield as they capitulated 2-0 at Old Trafford.

The Saints had to be looking longingly across the pitch where their former midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin sat as an unused substitute for Manchester United. The Saints have lost key player after key player over the past few summers and it looks like it might be catching up to them as Jordy Classie struggled to deputize for the injured Romeu. Classie was culpable in United's second goal conceding a needless penalty to Luke Shaw at the edge of the box. Losing Schneiderlin, Wanyama, Mane, Lallana, Lovern, Clyne, and Pelle over the past two summers looks like it might just be too much.

Oriol Romeu scored a late equalizer for Southampton to give them a 1-1 draw against Aston Villa.

The midfielder has been playing better for the Saints but doesn't usually do enough in attack to warrant fantasy consideration. He strengthens Southampton's defensive play and that showed in a decent performance against Aston Villa today, but Morgan Schneiderlin's presence is certainly missed this season. The Saints need to find a way to improve in attack, where they've struggled in the past couple of weeks, and Dusan Tadic's returning to form could give them the boost they need.

Southampton have moved to further sure up their holding midfield with a move for Chelsea's frequently loaned-out midfielder Oriol Romeu for £5million.

There was a time when Oriol Romeu looked like he was going to be the answer in holding midfield for Chelsea for a number of years. Nemanja Matic hadn't panned out and the Barcelona-trained player arrived. After a solid first season, a serious knee injury derailed Romeu's second season at Stamford Bridge and he never really rebounded. He was loaned out to Valencia and Stuttgart over the past two seasons with modest success. With his move to Southampton he will likely be in the mix with Harrison Reed as a reserve in holding midfield behind Jordy Clasie and Victor Wanyama. His Barcelona training may make him a solid fit for Southampton's style of play and maximize his potential if he gets a solid run of matches.

Chelsea midfielder Oriol Romeu has joined Stuttgart on a season-long loan.

The midfielder is an exciting prospect who is only 22 years old. He will be able to face good competition in the Bundesliga and earn important playing time before making a run at a Chelsea job. Chelsea's midfield is crowded at the moment and the acquisition of Cesc Fabregas really hurt Romeu's chances of staying at the club this season. He will be a big part of Stuttgart's team as they try to improve from a bad season last year.

Romeu had a tough time finding a spot in the Chelsea lineup and the 21 year old can likely benefit from extra playing time at Valencia. The Chelsea midfield is crowded and this will likely benefit both sides. Valencia can provide him with plenty of playing time and he will have fairly good competition in La Liga.

There is interest from Spanish clubs about Oriol Romeu and he could be joining teammate Marko Marin on a season long loan to Spain.

Celta Vigo along with other Spanish sides are interested in Oriol Romeu for the season. The youngster had injury problems that prevented him from fitting in at Chelsea last season so its unknown how well he can really perform in the Premier League. This is a tough decision for Mourinho, but don't be surprised if he leaves due to Chelsea's congested midfield.
