Southampton have signed Romanian defender Florin Gardos as a replacement for Dejan Lovren.
Gardos has joined Southampton on a four-year deal. The 25 year old is an experienced defender who can provide an immediate replacement for Lovren. Southampton's squad has definitely lost an edge from last season but the new signings they've brought in should keep the club competitive for another top ten finish. Gardos possesses a lot of quality and could be a great fantasy choice if he's prized well in the Yahoo! game. Maya Yoshida is the one likely to lose his starting spot. Aug 14 - 4:45 PM

Japan look to be heading in the wrong direction, squandering several chances with a man advantage, and as a result are on the verge of elimination after a 0-0 draw with Greece.

Japan had to think one goal might be enough to win headed into this one given Greece's lack of scoring ability, but they simply couldn't break through. Once they were given a man advantage, they were dominating possession but could not find the end product in the final third, including two clear chances on net around the 70th minute. They are not eliminated yet, but they would need to defeat Colombia by a considerable margin and hope for a draw between Ivory Coast and Greece to get through. Maya Yoshida earns a clean sheet for his efforts.

Japan struck first and were ahead as the match entered the final half hour, but a two goal barrage by the Ivorians spoiled the day as the Samurai Blue come away empty-handed in the 2-1 loss.

Maya Yoshida started at center back and other than a yellow card in the first half was part of an effective defensive unit against the physical Ivorians but eventually the opponents were twice able to muscle through for headers. Shinji Kagawa made some contributions but was generally quiet in this one as Japan now look to topple Greece.

Maya Yoshida has suffered a knee injury and is set to miss the rest of season.

Yoshida was the main backup for Dejan Lovren and Jose Fonte at Southampton but the Japanese international will miss the last seven games. There is no word on how serious the injury is but there has not been talk of ruptured ligaments. Jos Hooiveld will step up as the primary backup but is not expected to get much run as long as Lovren and Fonte are healthy.

Maya Yoshida helped Japan to a 4-2 win over New Zealand today.

Yoshida was left on the bench for Southampton's game against Liverpool with Jose Fonte and Dejan Lovren both healthy but he is still the first choice in Japan's back line. He played all 90 minutes in today's friendly. Yoshida is only a fantasy option if Lovren or Fonte are out with injury.

Maya Yoshida scored his first Premier League goal in a 3-1 loss to West Ham United.

Yoshida's goal wasn't enough even. Southampton dominated big parts of possession in this game but West Ham's defense was too much handle and the Hammers were able to score three goals with some luck. On another day, this game would have ended in a draw or a Southampton win, but this is why they play the game. Adam Lallana had another good game but finished with only six fantasy points after receiving a late yellow card.
