Claude Puel got the better of his former club Southampton as Leicester City ran rampant in a 4-1 win at the St. Mary's Stadium.
Coming off a strong performance in the 1-1 draw against Arsenal, Southampton's defense was unable to handle a rejuvenated Leicester City attack. Riyad Mahrez struck first, afforded too much space as he dribbled unchallenged to the edge of the area and fired into the bottom corner past Fraser Forster. Shinji Okazaki made it 2-0 shortly after the half-hour mark when Southampton failed to clear a Christian Fuchs shot, while Harry Maguire was given time to turn and pick out Andy King at the far post six minutes later. The home side improved after the break and pulled one back when Yoshida rose to head in Ryan Bertrand's corner. But the Foxes crushed any hopes of comeback when Jamie Vardy picked out Okazaki's diagonal run and the striker completed his brace. Overall, it was a bad night for the Saints. Southampton has confirmed a new three-year contract for center-back Maya Yoshida through the 2020 season.

After selling Jose Fonte last winter and seeing the Virgil van Dijk transfer saga play out, a new deal for Yoshida seems prudent. The Japanese international came up huge for Southampton last season, where he made 23 league appearances, and is now considered the cornerstone of the club's defense. "There was no reason to leave the club," he said. "I have been here for five years. In that time, I have had difficult moments, good moments – everything. I feel like it's my home and I'm very happy to continue my journey with Southampton. It's a new chapter for my career."

Southampton scored twice in a couple of minutes and Maya Yoshida nodded in late to seal a satisfying first victory for Mauricio Pellegrino as manager.

It was a near full strength XI for Southampton with Bertrand returning to his left-back slot for the first time this pre-season. However, it was the other starting full-back, Jeremy Pied, who started strongly, seeing the shot which completed a powerful run saved. Gabbiadini failed to add a finishing touch when a loose-ball fell to him before Pied again caused trouble, crossing for Yoshida who headed wide. Boufal saw a diving header created by Tadic from deep saved. Gabbi broke the deadlock with his head from a cross by Matt Targett, who had replaced Bertrand. Two minutes later, Targett again provided a dangerous cross, which Ward-Prowse finished into the foot of the net. JWP created the third with an out swinging corner late on, which Yoshida met after beating his opponents in the air.

Southampton commenced their pre-season preparations with a result that echoed last season's tedium - a 0-0 draw.

As most managers have done thus far this summer, Mauricio Pellegrino completely changed his side at half-time, sharing game time amongst his extended squad. They drew 0-0 with Swiss side St. Gallen, having spent a period prior training in Austria. One major name who did not feature at all was Virgil Van Dijk, who is slowly being reintroduced to full contact encounters. Ryan Bertrand was also kept aside as a precaution due to a minor hamstring injury. The Saints controlled the first half but still leaked chances, which were ably dealt with by Forster. Tella and Tadic had chances at the other end. In the second period, Alex McCarthy made two good saves to maintain the clean sheet while Long and Gabbiadini missed chances.

Southampton moved seven points clear of the relegation zone and ended Crystal Palace's four game winning run with a 3-1 win at St. Mary's.

In the early stages, both sides had chances to score with Luka Milivojevic hitting the post and Hennessey dived to tip away a Redmond header. However, the visitors took the lead through Benteke's 11th of the PL season after great interplay by his teammates Townsend and Zaha. However, the Saints drew level before the interval. They had two potential penalty appeals waved away before Redmond placed his shot beyond Palace's number one. Shane long was particularly wasteful in the second half, however the Saints weren't made rue their missed chances as the unlikely hero Maya Yoshida scored a tap in and seconds later Ward-Prowse put the result beyond doubt. Palace haven't escaped the relegation battle just yet.

Southampton have officially completed the signing of Uruguayan centre-back Martin Caceres on a free transfer.

The 29 year old former Barcelona man left Juventus last summer after his contract expired. At Juve, he won 4 Serie A titles across three spells for the club in 77 appearances. He has not made a competitive appearance since last February, when he ruptured his Achilles tendon. Caceres said he is delighted to become a Saint for the rest of the season, where he will cover for the injured Virgil Van Dijk: "I am very happy to have signed for what is an important club in English football... Of all of the options that I had, I think that the best option for me was to come to Southampton."

Southampton's drew 2-2 with Norwich in the FA Cup third round at the weekend, and the tie will now go to a replay on Wednesday January 18th.

Centre-back duo Virgil van Dijk and Maya Yoshida struck for the Saints in a frustrating result. The replay and potential 4th round tie if they are victorious means that the Saints could now end up playing 9 games this month given their additional EFL Cup semi-final and league commitments. The equaliser by Steven Naismith in added time was typical of Southampton's season to date, which has been filled with disappointment and glimmers of false hope. The side are currently on a streak of 3 consecutive losses in the league and manager Claude Puel faces the challenge of rallying his side ahead of Wednesday's League Cup semi-final with The Reds.

Anthony Martial has been electric since his arrival at Manchester United and there's no doubt it will continue if he continues to get gifts the likes of the one presented to him by Maya Yoshida.

The Saints center back pushed a weak pass back toward his own box only to see the French teenager race in and shoot on the goalkeeper. He wrong-footed Maarten Stekelenberg and rolled it into the far side of the net. The Saints still could have saved a point but Jose Fonte saw an excellent effort denied by David De Gea. Southampton have started the season struggling badly after exceptional seasons in each of the past two campaigns.

Maya Yoshida scored in Japan's 3-0 win over Cambodia.

Yoshida is Japan's nailed on starter at center-back and showed his versatility when he scored to double the team's lead in their 3-0 win over Cambodia. Yoshida has played well this season, featuring in all four Southampton matches despite the club's addition of Steven Caulker. Caulker could challenge Yoshida for the starting spot down the line, so don't be afraid to trade Yoshida if you can find good value in return for him.

The Southampton side that impressed so well in preseason and in early Europa action find themselves on only one point after two games with a 0-2 defeat to Everton today.

Despite going without a goal on the day, the issue with the Saints is clearly not the attack. The goals will surely come. What is alarming is their defending at the moment. They desperately need Ryan Bertrand back. Maya Yoshida is no Toby Alderweireld and Cedric is clearly showing growing pains in spite of his attractive attacking displays. Above all though, the rock of Morgan Schneiderlin is vastly missed and it is not helping that Jordy Clasie's leage career has started in the physio room. Southampton will look for answers ahead next week's trip to Watford. What was once looking like a lucrative fantasy matchup is now anyone's guess.

Southampton continued their positive preseason tour of the Netherlands with a win over Feyenoord, 0-3.

It is looking more and more now as we inch closer to Week 1 that Maya Yoshida will be starting alongside Jose Fonte at center back, making him a fantastic budget option in the FPL game and certainly needs to be owned in draft leagues. While keeping the opponent out, he also managed to score with a header between additional goals by Graziano Pelle and Juanmi. There is always a chance before September that another purchase could be made to threaten Yoshida's place, but until then, expect him to be on the team sheet regularly.

Maya Yoshida could have a huge opportunity this season with Toby Alderweireld gone.

Yoshida was bound to have a big role last season and then the Saints signed Toby Alderweireld, but with him now gone, Yoshida could have a starting job come August. The Japanese defender has been solid in the past season and has once again looked great in pre-season this year. He has a knack for scoring goals once in a while and if Southampton's defense can be as good as last season, Yoshida will have some fantasy value in the right formats. Keep an eye out for new Southampton signings, but as of right now, Yoshida is probably primed for a starting spot next to Jose Fonte.

Maya Yoshida shifted to left-back during Southampton's match against QPR yesterday and was successful in the role.

Matt Targett picked up an injury in the first half and Florin Gardos replaced him, but it was Yoshida who slid over to left-back while Gardos was utilized centrally. Yoshida was great in the win, picking up the game winning assist and a clean sheet. He finished with 16 fantasy points, which was nice to see for fantasy managers after a negative six point performance last week(due to a yellow card and four fouls). Yoshida is generally useful in fantasy when he starts, and we would expect him to start again next week. There is a chance that Matt Targett and Toby Alderweireld both return for next weekend, in which case it's worth monitoring Yoshida's starting status.

Maya Yoshida and Florin Gardos are in a battle to earn a start in Southampton's match against Swansea this weekend.

Yoshida just returned from international duty and will be challenging Gardos for a start. Gardos was benched earlier this month for playing poorly, but he looked much better once Yoshida was out for international duty. This will likely be a mystery up until lineups are announced and we don't feel good with either defender in formats where you can't change the lineup up until kickoff.

Ronald Koeman shook his formation up in an effort to snap a four game losing streak in league play and the plan paid off as Maya Yoshida scored a goal and helped keep a clean sheet in an impressive 3-0 drubbing of Everton.

With a rash of injuries in central midfield, Koeman was almost forced into playing Yoshida with Toby Alderweireld and Jose Fonte at centerback and allowing Ryan Bertrand and Nathaniel Clyne to play higher up as wingbacks because there are so many central midfielders either injured or suspended. The Saints were fortunate to have a Romelu Lukaku own goal give them all they needed to win in the first half, but they put the game to bed in the 2nd as Graziano Pelle notched his eighth goal of the season and with time running out, Yoshida scored with more of a shoulder than an outright header, but he will take it. A huge haul for him for the two people in the world that may have played him. Considering the positive result, we may see more 5-3-2 from Southampton, further increasing the attraction of Bertrand and Clyne.
