Newcastle scored three goals to break out of their two month slump to earn a 3-0 win and officially relegate Cardiff City back to the Championship for next season.
Shola Ameobi scored early for the Magpies and Loic Remy and Steven Taylor added late insurance goals to give Newcastle a boost after weeks of scoring issues have plagued the club. Shola Ameobi scored his first goal in ages to give NEwcastle United the lead and end their scoring drought, but the Magpies would rack up injuries and concede twice to eventually come up empty-handed in a 1-2 loss to Swansea City.

The outlook began gloomy for Newcastle when Papiss Cisse pulled up limp and had to be replaced twenty minutes in, but Ameobi quickly reversed fortunes when he was fed in the box by Luuk de Jong and twisted his way around the defense to get a shot off that beat Michel Vorm and ended a goalless drought that lasted over six hours. However, things took a turn for the worse permanently when De Jong looked to suffer a major injury and both of the Magpie forwards had to be removed. Alan Pardew had to then rely om Loic Remy more than expected, who had just come back to the squad after a six game layoff, and he was ineffective. Newcastle continue to stumble their way through a mid table finish.

Shola Ameobi scored his third goal of the pre-season against Blackpool as the Magpies held on to a 1-0 victory.

Ameobi's third goal in as many matches is a welcome sign for the club's long-serving striker. Newcastle will hope that form carries on into the season as they have yet to add to their options up front.

Shola Ameobi scored on the hour as Newcastle drew with Portuguese side Pacos.

Ameobi left the last preseason match with what looked like a bad wrist injury so his return is welcome news. However, this is the second disappointing result for Newcastle as the side looks to rebound from last season's flirtation with relegation.

Shola Ameobi scored in Newcastle's 3-1 defeat to Portugal's Rio Ave but left the match with a suspected broken wrist.

Newcastle won't rely on Ameobi this season, but can ill afford to be down another forward. Their only other senior striker, Papiss Cisse, is not with the team for training as he refuses to wear sponsor Wonga on his strip.
