Middlesbrough are in talks to acquire American goalkeeper Brad Guzan.
Guzan was part of relegated Aston Villa side and has been deemed surplus at Aston Villa. The 31-year-old still has some time left as a starting goalkeeper and would be an upgrade over anyone currently at Middlesbrough. He will be a low-tier fantasy pick if he ends up with the new-comers. Brad Guzan, recently restored to the starting role, failed to punch to safety and saw the deflection go past him for the only goal.

Aston Villa have been shaking up the executive suite this week and it looks like they will have a season in the Championship to get the on-the-field product worked out. Guzan made the sort of mistake that has typified Villa's season. They played decently and didn't give Swansea an intentional shot on target but still managed to lose.

Nothing seems to be going right for Aston Villa after the club's latest humiliating loss, a 4-0 defeat at the hands of Manchester City's second-half scoring.

The Villa defense did well to hold City without a goal in the first half, but proceeded to concede four goals in an 18-minute stretch, including two goals from Sergio Aguero and two assists from David Silva. Brad Guzan returned for his second straight start in goal after being benched for the previous seven, but the only luck the keeper had was Sergio Aguero hitting the post on a penalty shot. Villa now sit nine points from leaving the relegation zone, which is how many points it has from wins this season, and has conceded 15 goals in the last four Prmier League matches.

Aston Villa's Brad Guzan was embarrassed in the team's 4-0 FA cup loss against Manchester City.

Guzan has been dropped from Villa's first team and hasn't played in the Premier League for a while now. Coming in relief for Mark Bunn in the FA Cup, Guzan didn't do anything to show fans he deserves a starting spot. His form has really fallen, and he isn't worth holding onto in any format.

It wasn't pretty for Brad Guzan and Aston Villa but they scratched and clawed their way to a clean sheet against the current league leaders at Villa Park in Week 12.

Guzan appeared to save one point blank Raheem Sterling header with his face to keep the clean sheet going in the second half. The USA international was also bailed out by the crossbar when Fernando had an open header in the box in stoppage time. However it was achieved, Aston Villa will celebrate a point against the top team in the league in Remi Garde's debut match in charge. The former Arsenal player helped his old team out by giving them a chance to move to the top of the league if they can get all three points in the North London Derby later today.

Brad Guzan made a strong save from a Charlie Adam long range chip but it wasn't enough as Stoke City came to Villa Park and were clearly the better team and converted that to a 1-0 away win.

It's looking grim for Aston Villa. Home matches against clubs like Stoke City, no better than mid-table themselves, should provide the opportunity to pick up at least one if not all three points. Instead, Villa were dominated even if the final score wasn't unsightly per se. Neither the defense nor the attack are particularly good and even more troubling is that they can't seem to get things together in the same week.

Both on and off the pitch, this summer's Gold Cup was mired in criticism and it ended in forgettable fashion as the United States lost the 3rd place consolation match to Panama, 1-1 (2-3 penalties).

After failing to reach the finals of this tournament for the first time in six attempts, the United States added another unwanted stat to this summer's nightmare by losing consecutive Gold Cup matches for the first time. They once again dominated the stat sheet as they did against Jamaica, and Brad Guzan bounced back in a big way, playing error-free and coming up with a couple of quality stops, but it wasn't meant to be. Now, after players speaking out about how poorly CONCACAF have managed the tournament, questions are being raised about the future of Jurgen Klinsmann. About the only memorable sight from today, outside of Clint Dempsey's goal, set up by DeAndre Yedlin, was the final appearance by DaMarcus Beasley with the Stars and Stripes.

The United States failed to defend their Gold Cup title and were left out of the final for the first time in six tournaments as Jamaica shocked them with a 1-2 win in Atlanta.

Perhaps things were too easy for the US a couple of nights ago when they simply cruised past Cuba, but they were a gear behind Jamaica from the jump and Brad Guzan looks to be the culprit of both of the goals conceded in the first half. The second of which was inexcusable as Guzan left the area with the ball in hand, setting up the free kick which the Reggae Boyz converted with aplomb. Down two at the break, Jurgen Klinsmann must have had quite the locker room speech as it was a different looking US side in the second half. Michael Bradley cut the deficit to one in the 48th minute and the onslaught continued the rest of the way, but the US simply couldnt covert any of their many chances. Its a tough pill for the US to swallow and it draws more criticism of Guzan's play in recent months, as Aston Villa set to open their season with him as their only experienced keeper option.

The United States punched their ticket to a Gold Cup semi-final appearance by mauling Cuba 6-0, with a Clint Dempsey hat trick leading the way.

After a solid but perhaps not spectacular trip through the group stage, the United States kicked it up another gear against a Cuban side that was well overmatched, most noticeable their keeper, whose play can be argued to be responsible for at least a couple of the goals. Dempsey started things with a header from a Timothy Chandler cross. Goals would follow from Gyasi Zardes and Aaron Johansson before Omar Gonzalez made it 4-0 just before half. Dempsey would grab his second goal by converting a penalty then score his tourney leading sixth goal in the 78th minute. Brad Guzan kept a relatively easy clean sheet. They await the winner of Haiti v Jamaica to learn of their semi-final opponent.

After losing his starting spot to Shay Given at the end of last season, Brad Guzan appears to head the queue to start for Villa again this season.

The Birmingham Mail are reporting that Aston Villa, who lost Shay Given to Stoke City last week, have abandoned their search for a new starting goalkeeper and will restore Guzan to that role for the 2015-16 season. Villa were bad all over the park last season so it's hard to know how much to pin on Guzan vs. how much to pin on issues in defense and in management for their poor form. Whether through lack of viable alternatives or reconsideration of fault, Villa appear to be keeping faith with US international Guzan. Guzan and his US teammates will face Panama in their final group stage match at the CONCACAF Goal Cup tonight having already secured top spot in the group.

Brad Guzan has been named the starting goalkeeper for the US Men's National Team for their upcoming Gold Cup.

Guzan lost his job at Aston Villa late in the season to 39-year-old Shay Given, putting his future with USMNT in a slight doubt. It now sounds that he is still the number one goalkeeper during Tim Howard's one year leave, but his leash will probably be shorter should he not perform up to par. Guzan's dip in form this season is concerning for Villa fans and they may have to look for a new goalkeeper this summer if Guzan doesn't regain his old form.

A number of mistakes ended up costing Aston Villa points at the Etihad as they lost 3-2 to Manchester City.

Aston Villa started the match extremely poorly after Brad Guzan gifted Sergio Aguero an open net when trying to connect a pass across the back. It was possibly Aguero's easiest goal of his career and it was the start Manchester City needed. Villa were able to fight back and eventually tie the match 2-2, but a late Fernandinho goal gave City a much needed three points. Aston Villa will surely be disappointed as they must feel they deserve more than zero points from this match. They are now just two points above the relegation zone and are still strongly involved in the relegation race.

Brad Guzan earned his 100th appearance today when Aston Villa faced Swansea.

He becomes the 10th American to get 100 Premier League matches under his belt. Brad Friedel leads all Americans with 450. Guzan made a crucial error in the match when he failed to challenge Gylfi Sigurdsson's free-kick for the only goal of the match. Despite the error, Guzan remains Villa's number one option between the posts. He is also challenging Tim Howard for Team USA's starting goalkeeper spot for upcoming competitions.

American goalkeeper Brad Guzan was exceptional this weekend in Aston Villa's 1-1 draw against Manchester United.

Guzan saved an incredible eight shots, including two late in the game after Villa were down to 10 men. The performance is yet another one that supports the view of those who think Guzan should replace Tim Howard at the next World Cup. The American will be 33 years old at that time and will have a solid chance of winning the job.
